Infiniboard: Vertical scrolling hack for iPhone released

If you are of the jailbreaking persuasion, a interesting little app called infiniboard just popped up on Cydia that allows you to scroll your iPhone apps pages vertically.  The developer, chpwn, was also involved in the popular Proswitcher application.  Might we see something like this in iPhone OS 4?

not cool

I don't think Apple would go for both vertical and horizontal scrolling.  I think it ruins the simplicity of the interface.  For some less savvy users it would seems confusing if they had to search for their icons across nine screens both horizontally and vertically.

Wow, how many times did he move apps about instead of just showing what it was about? Made me very confused and dizzy. Either way, it's messy. Apple wouldn't go for this. I reckon they'd go for Folder hierarchy type thing first. Time will tell.

I love how it took him half the video to figure out what he needed to do to show us the the scrolling. Jesus.

So its come full circle ?The original jailbroken iphones featured vertical scrolling until someone worked out how to make the seperate panes that you flick horizontaly to.

Technically impressive. But I wouldn't use it. As others have pointed out, it needlessly complicates the interface. Right now, icons can be hiding in separate views either to the left or the right of where you are. With this mod, they could be left, right, above, below... but even worse. The icon you want is to the right, but you miss it because it's to the right AND below! A nice bit of programming, but it degrades usability.

I think that in iPhone OS 4 you won't scroll horizontally (for apps) any longer. Instead the apps scroll vertically and without interruption - and if you scroll horizontally there'll be other features like we have today with Spotlight. Widgets might be implemented this way...

This is how the Palm WebOS launcher works. It's a great way to manage categories of apps without being limited to 16 per page.

This thing is ugly. Apple should ban some of these "accessories" the same way the ban apps from the AppStore. Maybe Steve thought it was cool being wooden like the first Apple computer :) btw, since this dark gray text area began I can't post from my iPhone. What's with the ""Path:p" thing at the bottom?

Congrats on the newest and hottest tweak out there. I have been waiting for this to come out for 2 weeks now.

I'm going to give it a shot...seems like a viable solution to catagories which has been destroying my battery...create one page with all my games, one with settings, one with videios, etc.

Actually it's a great tweak, allows me to sort all my apps in different pages according to categories,(games, tools, etc..) and integrates seamlessly in the iphone interface.without degrading usability. totally like how it detects horizontal or vertical scrolling a la Safari, indeed very cool and totally worth the humble asking price.
