Happy Birthday, iMacSubmitted by Andy Space on Wed, 05/07/2008 - 15:39.
Ten years ago this week Apple introduced the product which single-handedly helped the company rebound back into the ascendancy, the iMac. We thought it worth a repeat of then Apple iCEO Steve Job’s introduction of the new $1299 system, which offered a 233MHz G3 processor, 32MB of memory, a 4GB drive, USB and a CD-ROM drive (and built-in modem). Critics at the time slammed the system’s lack of a floppy drive, but ten years on and the iMac is still here. The floppy drive is not. Happy birthday, iMac.

"We asked ourselves what was the largest display we'd want in one of these things... 15 inches..."
written on my 24" imac...
ah yes, but
my favourite quote's just near the end, "look at this thing, looks like its from a different planet - a planet with better designers..."
the rest is history, as they say..
The thing still looks better
The thing still looks better than most PCs.
I just don't understand how PC manufacturers sat on the sideline.
Wow!! Jobs in a suit
Ok. When did El Jobso ditch the suit for the turtle neck???
Little did Steve realize how
Little did Steve realize how universally hated that mouse would become once it was actually released...
Oh yes! I always wanted a
Oh yes! I always wanted a Hockey Puck for a Mouse! They reached a little too far...but that's how we progress.
Display problems
Ahh yes the first iMac. I like how he talked up the quality of the display. The first generation iMacs had display issues.
Because Mr Jobs demanded that it not have a fan the display boards would overheat and burn out. I ended up developing an ATX power supply converter board for the iMac. It allowed you to take out the logic board and put it into a standard PC case. I was able to give a lot of these iMacs a 2nd life and make some money on the side. Thanks Steve! :-)
How far we have come in 10 years
And apart from the CRT screen, the rest of the PC manufacturers still haven't caught up.

You celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iMac. I'll mourn the 10th year of Apple naming everything under the sun with an "i" in front of it.

"Let's go ahaed and put a lot of memory in this thing; 32 Mb"
Through the roof!
Wow
How things have progressed in 10 years, I can't believe we ever thought 32MB was a lot of RAM, and 233MHz was fast.
I also can't believe how much Steve has visibly aged in the last decade.
And PC manufacturers didn't sit on the sidelines, they copied the iMac as fast as they could. Some of the copies were too similar in appearance that Apple slapped them with cease-and-desists (e.g. eMachines' eOne), and the rest just failed miserably (e.g. Dell webPC).
Yep, i worked at circuit
Yep, i worked at circuit city when apple transitioned from the performa line to the iMac... I remember almost all the PC manufacturers had some sort of iMac looking computer.
Compaq and the original Acer aspire spring to mind right away.
and even though it was 2 pieces, my 1989 era IBM PS1 looked alot like a beige monochrome version of the iMac.
