Digitimes thinks Quad-Core iMacs coming in 2009

Digitimes is this morning reporting that the early 2009 iMacs will have a little exxtra umph under the hood.  In the form of new Intel Quad core 65W chips.

Intel is planning to launch three 65W low-power desktop CPUs targeting small form factor (SFF) PCs and all-in-one PCs in the middle of January next year, according to sources at PC vendors.

Intel will launch the Core 2 Quad Q8200s (2.33GHz/4MB L2), Core 2 Quad Q9400s (2.66GHz/6MB L2) and Core 2 Quad Q9550s (2.83GHz/12MB L2) with prices at US$245, US$320 and US$369, respectively in thousand-unit tray quantities. These CPUs will have the same specifications as standard CPUs with the same model number, but will see their TDP drop from 95W to 65W.

PC vendors including Apple, Acer, Hewlett-Packard and Dell have already decided to launch products based on these CPUs, while Asustek Computer is still evaluating doing so.

Something else to consider: Apple could release a Psystar-killing everyman "Mac" based on these chips. Yeah, we know, unlikely.

Oh, and that black iMac..it is just something we found out there on the internets to get your brain going :D

Apple freakin' rocks. A quad core chip in an iMac is so ass kicking cool as to be almost unbelievable. It's mind blowing, man! What does that leave for the Mac Pro? Apple will have to bump it up to 16 cores to justify the price difference.

Wake me when they release a sub $300 ($400 for a mid-tower) desktop and $500 notebook. Until then, they are simply a company that releases "average" products that are marked-up to show the alleged "quality" of the service they provide.

What?!?! And water down the Mac brand? We don't want a bunch of trailer trash buying Macs at Wal-Mart so they can surf NASCAR sites and play Deer Hunter. The Mac pricing is perfect for the quality and performance. If you want crap, then go and buy crap. There's plenty of crap out there from those other companies that aren't doing so well in the marketplace right now.

Ain't gonna happen...keep on buying that 400 mid tower and enjoy the low quality,no support and oh yea, buying a new one every 14 months!!!!!

You don't need no stink'in MAC, right.

If you're sleeping all day , then I guess you DO need a $300 computer.

Get some rest, you must be tired.

Well if it is a possibility of a quad core in an iMac I'll be geeked to put one on my desk. What I am hoping though is that with the upgrade of the Cinema displays, we might see a 30" iMac at MacWorld. Put that together with a quad core and I am set for action.

Is that black imac for real? I've never seen that before.

This makes me bummed out...I ordered a core2duo imac a month ago....if i knew about this i woulda waited!

I'm still on an XP machine and hating it. I've been waiting for 3 months and I'll continue to wait until the next iMac revision. I can't plop down that kind of money for a machine that's been on the shelf for months. Also, since Snow Leopard is going to be geared towards multi-core that is another reason to wait. If I had your imac, I would sell it on ebay ASAP. They are currently selling at almost the price you paid.

I doubt it. It's ugly and it's running Tiger. I don't think anyone would want to make their beautiful iMac black.

It IS time for this "Every-man Mac". I keep reading and personally want one, no NEED one! I need a solid half size metal box I can put my own GPU in and add a couple of drives...and leave on all the time!!!!

So, It is time for us to rise up and let Steve know how much he is @#$%$%&*& this up and build it....for Macworld 2009!!!!!

Maybe an online petition or mass wall to send to Steve and Apple will do it

9to5,Giz,Engadget,MacNN,MacDailyNews, Macrumors can you all get together on this.

The time is now.

Honestly I wouldn't want someone with that attitude towards computing owning a mac like that because it just causes headaches for the rest of us. Some messed up mac that you have cramned in a huge hard drive and GPU and leave it running all the time with max fans to cool it off is the type of machine that would be clogging up the genius bar all day.

What apple offers now is perfect, three options for desktops and portables, and within those three options you have a multitude of options to have exactly what you want. The iMac is the perfect computer with no wires going all over the place to connect your many monitors.

Just keep it simple Apple, don't change a thing!

My brain is thinking how hideous...

W00t quad core. Gimmi gimmi gimmi

I want something like a Mac Pro Nano, a screenless iMac with some room for storage and for some people a powerful GPU! Let Apple create something beautiful instead of the ugly Psystars in PC cases. Perfect.

Very nice, the black Imac! I must say the most beautiful Imac since the G4

On my wish list for the next iMac is one with a liquid cooled quad 64-bit CPU, NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 graphics, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive, Blu-Ray DVD RW drive and a 24 inch HD 1080p display.

Not Core i7 ?
