CNET.uk says the iPhone is the "Worst Phone EVAR"

Even though it is the highest rated mobile phone on their own site, they say, as a phone, it is the worst.  They cite poor mic and speakers, dropped or unreachable calls a a host of other issues.

It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It's certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it's rubbish, and we aim to prove it.

Strange because we don't have iPhone connectivity issues over here in the US?

You have to be kidding.  I've owned over thre Motorola phones a YEAR until the iPhone came out, and apart from the horrible build quality, calls weren't a tenth of the quality and ease you'll find using the iPhone.  Brush your teeth and try the call again, the Yanks can all call you out on this one.

"Brush your teeth and try the call again ..."

Ouch!

Don't hold back any. Say what's on your mind whydontcha!

maybe its the worst PHONE, but I'm sure it's the best SMART-PHONE out there...

Utter rubbish. I live in Manchester, UK and yes, I've had a dropped call now and then, but no more or less than any other phone I've owned. Data coverage seems fine, perhaps because I live and work in the city and rarely head out into the countryside. If you want to talk about dropped calls, ask someone on the 3 network! As for not being able to aline your ear with the microphone, I guess that's the best indication of the level of intelligence of this writer. Clearly written to attract attention to a site most never read.

I guess the dropped calls depend on where you're at. I've had my iPhone G1 since June 29, 2007 and use it everyday and have NEVER had a dropped call.  It's the best phone in my book!

My UK iPhone's never dropped a call and the sound quality is fine for me. Load of tosh.

Its because O2 suck big time. Worst phone till I stuck a vodafone SIM in it...

I love it but I have to admit that I get a dropped call every day or so. I really don't know if it's a hardware limitation or if the problem is on the carrier's side but I haven't experienced this with any other phone (Nokia, HTC, Siemens, SE, etc).

I am willing to (kinda) ignore it because it's such a great all-in-one device and it has taken the concept of mobility to a whole new level, but it has its flaws.

It is the worst voice reliability and call quality yet the best data speed and hardware build quality in my experience. I hate talking in the phone, so it is a thankful deterrent for the people who want to tie me up by the ear because they can't make the time to text or email me or meet in person over a meal. And it brings me close to other iPhone users as our shared comraderie over frustration with AT&T's edge network. If I could just pay for data and drop voice, I would. I have an iPhone because I couldn't talk my wife into an iPod touch and a Verizon MiFi combo.

Tosh and poppy cock...

O2 have always been the best coverage in the south of england.. my iphone sounds better than any of the sony phones i have been using as i travel the world..

to be honest its been the best all round phone i have owned since 1991 and the only reason i have a second phone is because i want my UK number live all the time..

My Iphone just seems to work where ever i go in europe or the middle east..

Well, they seem to be blaming the phone for the poor quality of the network service.

I've had a jailbroken iphone and tried several different sims in different countries, and it just works fine.

I works as good as your service provider does.

Aint it?

I love my iphone and would not replace it for anything.  However looking at it just as a phone it is not the best.  Clearly the best smart phone to date. Dropped calls are typical for me compared to other phones.  My biggest complaint is the mic picks up lots of background noise.

"and we aim to prove it" And did they prove it?

Wow this guy should be recievving a lot of money from Microsoft or Rim or Nokia for saying that.

An independen COMUNICATIONS company already proved that iPhone is one of the best PHONEs (smart ones and cheap ones) EVER. They test how the iphone handles call between one cell tower to other. but hey, what the heck, this UK cnet boys need to show in the map, let give them a hug....

Strange...

The author of this article wrote another one titled "How I learned to stop worrying and love the iPhone." :D

Maybe it depends where you live. I don't think that it's right to make a blanket statement like that. It certainly does not ring true to my experience. (no pun intended) My iPhone is my fourth cell phone and first smart phone.

It is BY FAR the best cell phone that I have ever owned. In a year and a half, I've had one, maybe two dropped calls. It works the way I want it to work. Visual Voicemail is wonderful. For where I live, the coverage is good. All of the useful apps are just gravy... It's a great phone!

I can appreciate that your mileage may vary, I expect largely based on your carrier. From what I've read it sounds like AT&T kind of crapped the bed for a lot of people. In Canada,  and more specifically in my area, Rogers have done pretty well.

My only complaint is I still say the monthly bills are too high.

Sorry, but you really need to change the headline here… its spelled Ever.

You made it this far on teh interwebs without encountering EVAR!?

Have any of you who are slating CNET actually read the article? FYI there are problems not only with dropped calls but with waking from sleep and failing to connect calls.  It's quite a substantial problem too, it's something I personally struggle with daily and it is immensely frustrating. Can you imagine what it's like trying to call someone repeatedly and it just wont connect. How about when the other iphone is in the room beside you and you know they're both on with signal.

I'm not the only frustrated customer either, it was recently featured on a consumer affairs BBC programme called watchdog.  Apple are reportedly looking into it (slowly).

For those of you who are fortunate enough not to have had the problem then great I'm happy for you. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Now calm down, we all love our iPhones but they're not perfect and are rarely immune from criticism.

I have had an iphone since launch day 1 in the UK. While I have had no problems with the 1st gen I have had 5 replacements (kid u not) with the 2nd and 3rd gen Phones. Only last week I visited the 'Genei' at Glasgow Apple Store and told him this exact thing. The phone is a fantastic gadget but an utterly shit phone. Poor reception, abysmal battery life, and multiple call dropping / not getting through in-spite of full reception displayed are some of the problems I have encountered. I would gladly tell my story to any consumer investigators although I have to say that Apple have been fairly OK..ish regarding replacing faulty phones and customer service. They ought to spend more time getting the fundamental functions sorted - I mean it is supposed to be a phone...right????

Im sorry to say this but that woman that wrote the article is a complete moron.

Has anyone actually read the drivel that she tries to pull off as being journalism? Oh wait i forgot she writes a blog. Thats right, so she basically has the credibility of a 16 year old schoolgirl blogging about how the new Twilight movie is going to be the "best evar".

Im not going to sit here and blow the iPhone trumpet because as with all things that are technology there are some cases where people have issues with the hardware. In most cases the said person does not post the same thing on every Apple forum they can find to see if they can rally support the masses so they can throw off the shackles of iPhone oppression.

But seriously if you are going to link to this kind of drivel please leave it to page 2 its not really news worthy once you check the source.

Somebody just bought this chick out....I mean... she wrote this column a few months ago...what the heck? http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/floragraham/0,291000193,49301482,00.htm

Link bait!

pretty weak. otherwise, pretty good.

(Check the calling features, not the other features)

What's a phone call?

Personally, I try to make and receive as few of  the pesky inconveniences as possible.

This is Awesome!

Oh, instead of giving me the thumbs down, just post a picture of your self inside the picture of a heart with some small bubbles coming out of your head and the heart going up to the iPhone.

Then, show another picture of yourself with a picture of war behind you and the however the iphone saves you from a bullet and the more you profess your liking / love of the iphone and everyone else's stupidity for not agreeing (no matter what their individual personal experience), the more personal life points you get that ultimately add up making you an amazing person that everyone emulates.

I live in South Africa, yup the third world, I have no problems with the call quality here and have had no complaints from others when receiving or making calls. As far as the milage of a charge cycle goes, use it as a phone and it'll last long, use it as a computer, play games, watch movies, surf and it won't last long. Hardly brain surgery.
