Update: OK go for it!
While we are excited to get our hands on things like Google Street View and Podcast direct downloads (no push notifications?!), the iPhone Dev Team warns us that upgrading an EDGE OR 3G iPhone to 2.2 will break the jailbreak and activation. They expect to have an update out shortly to adress this.
Now that we've performed our civic duty to warn jailbreakers, let's look at what the new update has in store for us:
- Enhancements to Maps
- Google Street View*
- Public transit and walking directions
- Display address of dropped pins
- Share location via email
- Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
- Enhancements to Mail
- Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
- Improved formatting of wide HTML email
- Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
- Improved stability and performance of Safari
- Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
- Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
- Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

Visual change with 2.2
No small visual change:
With 2.1 the corners of the home screen were curved (one pixel turned off) used to look like Tiger's curved corners.
With 2.2 it is now square corners, just like Leopard.
Just thought I'd share with those who appreciate small details :)

Not sure what home screen you are talking about buy my home screen has square corners. I am running 2.1 as well. Are you talking about Safari?

Google search in Safari
The Google search bar field has been moved to the same line as the address bar. Prior to v2.2, you had to hit the address bar and then the touch into the Google search field.
Promoting the Google Search Bar
I'm struggling to see this one as an improvement. I thought the old way (tap to get the search field, otherwise the address field is full width) worked just fine. Now it's annoying not to be able to see the longer URIs. Anyone agree?

I don't even have the 2.2 update installed and I don't like the search in the address bar. I liked it the way it was before. I don't need a useless search bar up there blocking my view of the address bar.
IF ANYTHING - Apple should make it so that I can toggle it on and off in the settings area instead of making it there permanently. At least give ME a choice. :)

Odd way of thinking that. For myself I've determined that this one will be my last iphone.. I've given up waiting for basic features to be implemented and everyone else has caught up now.

They also changed the podcast order so fot those you have with multiple episodes, they are in ascending date order so you can listen to them in the proper order without a lot of bother.

Does it turn off the annoying second SMS notification beep if you don't get to it as soon as it arrives? I HATE that feature.
