The SDK is upon us
Today's iPhone software development kit (SDK) announcement by Apple Inc. -- long anticipated and long overdue -- is big news for iPhone (and iPod Touch) users. Sure, there's a hitch: Just like last year, when Apple unveiled the iPhone in January then made would-be buyers wait six months to get their hands on it, everyone will have to wait until June for all the promised applications and advances to arrive.
But it will be well worth the wait.
When the one-year anniversary of iPhone 1.0 rolls around this summer, iPhone fans will get what is essentially version 2.0 of their favorite smartphone. The added features and apps expected then -- some of which were showcased by Apple today -- will transform the iPhone far beyond what it has been so far.

Makes you wonder if that was the plan from the beginning (and the SDK is just very very very late) or if they just realised a little late that web apps aren't gonna do it and jailbreaker made them realise what could be (the App Store is basically the installer.app)?
Somehow I'm still pretty skeptical...maybe its just the very untypical method of announcing something that won't be on the market for the another 6 month.
What does this tell us about the 3g iphone? will they even release one now that there's 2.0 on the way? and if so is it going to be around june? doubt it.
It was coming all along, i think apple wanted to 'force' the web app ecosystem to start rolling before though, they also had a lot do do before worrying about releasing the sdk to a usable spec for the devs as well as the material.
Apple hit not just a home run, but a grand slam! This is gonna guarantee the iPhone hits the 10 million mark. Once again, Jobs shows his genius for giving people what they need.
I think they only acted once there was demand for native applications and people started jailbreaking, I'm mean seriously if they wanted they could have released it at the launch of the iPhone, somewhere in the quicktime stream it says that it is the same SDK the developers at apple used to write the programs (mail, etc.).
They really should have hired more developers to get it ready for the launch of the iphone or at least for the touch.
what with the SDK announcement, i really can't see an apple tablet in the near future. i mean, iPhone and the touch ARE the apple tablet, as of June 08.
Does anyone waited for that SDK release event with the wish that price drops rumors for both Iphone and Ipod Touch would realize?
I am still waiting for thta price drop to acquire a pod, because at 499$ for a 32G it is definitively too expensive.
Does anyone have more information than me on this subject? If so, please share the information or your thoughts about it ;)
AFAIK the answer to the "Re: Is "Scaling Engineer" a new job title?" is yes
The GPS tracker app is a good example of an app that wouldn’t want to be frontmost. The other example that springs to mind is an IM client, which sits in the background until somebody sends a message.
