Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey get iPhone in 2008Submitted by Cleve Nettles on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 08:47.
Vodafone Group said Tuesday that it's signed an agreement with Apple Inc. to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets. Starting later in 2008 Vodafone will offer the iPhone in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Vodafone would be an additional carrier slated for both Australia (Telstra, Optus?) and Italy (TIM). While India is the biggest market announced so far at 1 billion people, news yesterday came out the Chinese handwriting recognition was found in the iPhone 2.0 beta software.

So Many Announcements
With so many announcements around an Australian iPhone (even if they are conflicting) I hope that means we will see a release soon (eg: as soon as the 3G phone is public). I also hope that all of these carriers claiming to offer an Australian iPhone means that it will not be carrier locked.

Vodafone's version of the iPhone - or how to become ridiculous
If Vodafone is really gonna take over the iPhone and brand it as ridiculous as they did with all other phones, their customers will become a walking joke. I also wonder how Vodafone will handle their closed Vodafone Live environment on the iPhone. It's the total opposite of what Apple meant by having a mobile internet device. Otherwise they should rather call it vPhone. Their approach of the business is getting their customers into chargeable areas when ever possible. We'll see a lot of Vodafone applications for the iPhone.
Apple just sell the iPhone like any other Apple product and end this mess. It just doesn't work - over half a million unlocked/jailbraked iPhones speak the truth.
It is official
In as far as it's been officially announced by Vodafone. I wouldn't wait for a confirmation from Apple themselves just yet.

Israel!
Africa and Turkey?
What about Israel??????????????
No Telstra
Stop saying Telstra is rumoured to carry the phone. There's never been a solid rumour that Telstra is getting the phone. The only rumour was that Sensis was building an iPhone web app, which DOESN'T mean Telstra is getting the phone, far from it.
Nice to be getting the
Nice to be getting the iPhone in South Africa but how about iTunes as well? It's well overdue.
I use Airtel in India, and
I use Airtel in India, and won't be changing over to Vodafone for the iPhone. Would I have to hack it or would I have to pay a premium to get it to that provider?
HTC sells the Touch officially with Airtel in India, and buying the unlocked version costs another thousand ($25) rupees.
