4G iPhone coming in 'early May'?

Those French Mobile Operators....they love to talk.  The latest information escaping their lips, according to French Magazine Challenges.fr (via TiPB), is that the iPhone 4G* is coming in early May, not the typical June-July timeframe that we are used to.   The magazine cites "several industry sources" but couldn't offer any details on the 4G iPhone.  They also speculate that the reason for an early launch would be to counter Google's rush of higher specced smart super phones with the Android OS.

They also mention that Microsoft could be a competitor as well, though we heard today that Windows Mobile 7 might not come until 2011 - which might as well be 3011.

*4th generation as in iteration of iPhone not 4G network

that't the good news that i waiting for.

hope its better than 3g

it will be interesting to see what apple has planned for the next iphone, i'm thinking an OLED screen and around a 5mp camera (don't care about flash). storage size won't change much, but i'm sure the processor, and ram will be upped. What would be interesting is to see faster wifi added. I think this update will bring a new design as well, i like the current design right now but it's getting a little old

OLED screens are gorgeous, until you try and use one in bright light, like sunlight.  Under sunlight or bright electric lights they are next to useless.  Read every review of something with OLED and they all note the poor screen under bright conditions.   In darker environments they are spectacular.   I can't wait for big screen OLED TV's for my dark home theater room.

Sacré bleu! Viva the loose-lipped French

1.  Is there even enough of a 4G infrastructure yet to make releasing a 4G phone anything more than a marketing ploy? (seriously asking, I don't know)

2.  If Apple does release an iPhone off-schedule, could it be to give AT&T one last hurrah with contract renewals before other networks get a chance?  (something that would only happen if Apple's current deal with AT&T is sufficiently more lucrative than one to be had on multiple carriers -- again, I don't know, just throwing it out there as a question)

Notice that the author put "4G" *before* iPhone.  I believe the author meant 4G=4th Generation rather than 4G=LTE.

1st Gen = 1G = iPhone

2nd Gen = 2G = iPhone 3G (notice that 3G comes *after* iPhone)

3rd Gen = 3G = iPhone 3GS

1:  While almost every carrier in the world is starting to test 4G cell service (LTE based) I don't think anyone actually has flipped the switch yet.  I don't really expect LTE 4G to go anywhere except major metro areas at first, starting around late 2010.   It will slowly spread, but I don't think you will see the same coverage as we have with 3G networks until at least 2012-2014.

2:  Who knows.  It will be a little weird for Apple to call this the iPhone 4G when it probably won't work on a 4G network.  Unless it is the iPhone 4G and the next iPhone that does support LTE is called the iPhone LTE.  Some people might think this means "lite" tho...

I don't think you guys get what "4g iPhone" means.  It's the 4th generation iPhone meaning hardware.

4G means 4th generation.

I can see where you might be confused but really shouldn't this type of confusion already have been cleared up when we had the 3G iPhone 3G and iphone 3Gs?

Why dont they just call it the iphone X.

that way we can have all the people that didnt understand what the difference between 3G and #rd Generation, getting confused over whether its the iphone "X" or the iphone "10".

Oh what happy times that will bring to the mac community forums.

I seriously doubt that it will be released with an OLED screen. Right now they're kind of gimmicky and Apple won't use it until the technology's been further refined. I can see the new iphone getting a new casing, 5mp camera, LED flash, more ram, better graphics chip, and hopefully the dual core ARM A9. As for wireless, i'm begging for .11n. I feel like 64gb and longer battery life are a given (in addition to it being faster)

Why the photo of a radio-enabled iPod Touch?

Awesome! I skipped the 3gs version in anticipation of this release.

I am a kind of surprised that so many people are looking for more and more megapixels in mobile phones.  I would never put more than 3 mp in a mobile phone because 3 mp gives you an opportunity to print  a picture as large as 25x20 cm, and that is a large picture for a mobile phone. Would I keep improving the sensor?  Apsolutely, in order to be able to take a better quality picture in low light condition.

More mp does not mean better quality picture, but larger picture.  The more mp you put in the same size of sensor means you will need more light for the same picture quality.  The quality of the picture taken, highly depends on a pixel ability to absorb more light, and a bigger pixel can absorb more light than a smaller one.   In order tu stuff so many pixlels on the sensors, they have to decrease the pixel size, and decreasing pixel size means higher demand of a sensor for light.  Practically, in darker light condition, you are less likely to take a good picture, but rather grainy low quality picture.

I am quite disappointed that OLED screens perform bad in the sun light, I did not know that before.  LCD screens are already bad enough in the sun light.

While I agree with most of what you said regarding megapixels, having more pixels will give us a sharper picture when you resize it down. It's a quick and dirty way to "improve" the quality of the picture without having to spend money.

We all know that it takes far more effort to create a sensor that has higher signal-to-noise ratio than to simply increase the pixel values, especially if you consider the size limitations on the camera. If you really need unsurpassed quality picture, go buy a DSLR, which has the appropriate construction to fit the huge sensor. Otherwise, higher megapixel is most certainly the appropriate way to improve the quality.

...Or they could come up with a tiny sensor with a better quality...

yeah, they should come up with a better quality sensors.

What you are saying makes absolute sense, but 70% of people using mobiles have a wrong idea that more MP means more clarity, so much so that when i enquired the mobile camera clarity with the phone dealer, he said "its having 5 MP Camera Boss!!!".. On the other hand more MP on a mobile can relate directly with more sharpness in the prints.

WoW,really, that would be awesome,I really hope its true.

Thanks for the article on the 4g phones. I would like to see what new technology do they have in them. Would be waiting for May.

Could you stop confusing people, please?

Let's take 3G as an example. If you write "iPhone 3G", what do you mean?
a) The second iteration iPhone, branded as "iPhone 3G" by Apple?
b) All iPhones supporting IMT-2000 (aka 3G) including the second and third iteration iPhones, branded as "iPhone 3G" and "iPhone 3GS" by Apple?
c) The third iteration iPhone, branded as "iPhone 3GS" by Apple?
d) The third version of iPhone hardware (unreleased)?

i am hoping vor a unibody iphone with very good battery life, just more then 1 day. Flash light would be nice. The new ARM A9 would be great, an so thinny like the ipod touch.

I'll bet this won't be happening. I doesn't make sense to release a new product when the "old" one is selling well. The longer you can push the old one the better you profit margin is. From strategic point of view its better to wait for competitors product which out performs the "old" product and then release more advanced product. I think this smells more like some "analyst" or mag wanting to enhance their own public image.

Does this mean U.S. iPhone users stuck with ATT will get better and more consistently better better service or not?

Poor Poor Poor choice to refer to the next iPhone as "4G". How stupid can you be? We're TWO years away from an iPhone running on any 4G network. Do we understand that yet?

We're coming up on the 4th gen, but the 3rd gen isn't even running on 7.2mb network yet. Are we learning anything?  4G isn't going to fall out of the sky as soon as Apple is ready to launch their 4th iPhone.

i need the micro sd card this time!

wow       there    some     speculation    on  capacity    saqying  32  gb      64   gb      or  128  gb  iphone    i  never    thought  i  would  ever    see     a  100   gb    cellphone   this  year   you        got    up  too   64   gb  iphone    and  2012   is  the  128   gb    iphone    2014     256   gb    iphone      2016    512  gb   iphone    2018   1  tb    iphone  or  terabyte    2020      2  tb  iphone and    yes  they  will  use    multi  terabyte    flash  memory  chips  no  spinning  hard  drives
