Enable tethering shortcut found - iPhone 3.0 is Live!

Update: IF you've updated to 3.1 (naughty!) - there is now a way to get your iPhone to tether to AT&T.

iPhone 3.0 is live! so we are going to repost our tethering tutorial with some big improvements.  You now don't have to do any downgrading or torrenting.    Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on "restore" in your iTunes with your iPhone attached.  Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK.  It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering.  Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom - 3 steps to tethering...

Oh, and how to you like cut and paste and spotlight search?

I love 3.0 so far. My favorite feature is search. I use it all the time to find emails. I havent used copy and paste that much yet, dont have a lot of use for it, but it will come in handy and a very welcomed feature. All in all a very good update!

is it just for at&t customers or even for people with other carriers?...I have vodafone here in italy and it seems like they're banning tethering with fw 3.0..

I am sorry. I'm a noob. Can you give a more details?

Sorry I didn't mean to call you Noob but you didn't make a name.
OK, Here it is Broke down in to Details.
Step 1. Open Terminal ON your MAC. "COPY" This below exactly
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing-bool TRUE
Step (1.A) "Paste" The above exactly as he told you in the message.

Step 2. DownLoad the File in "Step 1" That says "this file (for AT&T) or TRY Here for Other Carriers.
Step 3. "Mounting the Disk" is, Opening the file you just Downloaded. "Make sure you know where it was saved to on your MAC. When you see it open in a finder window Move to step 4
Step 4. Now Open Up iTUNES. Plug your phone in. Once your able to click it in the Device tab, OPTION Click RESTORE.
Step 5. BOOM YOUR DONE. SIMPLE DO EXACTLY LIKE HE TELLS YOU TO. If you dont understand this Find someone who does. This is simple, but if Terminal is confusing you dont need to even attempt this. But really its as simple as this. No big secret.

You will notice you get Cellular Data Network along with Tethering TAB UNDER Setting/General/NetWORK Click Network and under 3G settings Cellular Data Network click this For "MMS" Scroll To the BoTTom. APN will have something in it already. Leave anything with {Blank} {} "EMPTY" DO not Fill out{}
APN= wap.cingular
Username= {Blank}
Password= {Blank}
MMSC= mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy= 66.209.11.32
MMS Max Message Size= {Blank}
MMS US Prof URL= {Blank}

I found some other info online that said you had to call in to AT&T and say your a Developer to enable MMS. That same site said you had to fill out all the stuff here where {Blank} is.
I couldn't get it to work so I took out everything but what I have put in this form.
I then Turned Airplane mode ON then Tried sending one. Nothing I then Restarted my phone by holding down the Home button and LOCK button till I saw the APPLE logo. Nothing.
After all that I Took OUT MY SIM Card and and Restarted phone. and BOOM it works NOW.
I am rocking MMS.
Can anyone else verify Entering theses settings above and taking out sim card and testing?
Try it I know it works for me.

Picture messaging seems to be functional... There is a little camera icon next to the text entry field which allows one to attach an image to a message... However, I have been unsuccessful in getting one to send.....

How do I mount the disk image?

double click

This is a other simple way: http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/

Even better... visit help.BenM.at/help.php on your iphone. Go to mobileconfigs and find your country and then your carrier. When you tap on your carrier magic happens! You get taken to the Settings app asking you if you want to install an unsigned carrier profile... click install and wuahla! Tethering is enabled.

this works great my only question is, when ATT starts charging for tethering will this function still work for free...

works great on my new iphone 3gS. synch with itunes didnt reset it. actually i am writing this reply on iphone connection. i did the synching while connected to the internet thru iphone. and also got an sms while doing synching+tethering.

works great so far.

Holy crap was that easy!!!!! works great!!!!!

You cant have MMS if you follow this method.

What do you think the chances are that AT&T will bill people for doing this before they announce their plan? I have no real need for tethering, but would love to try it out.

it'd be hard to charge for a service which they haven't announced exists.

So will this bypass carrier. Presumably this will avoid being found out by said carrier and bumraped.

After updating my VoiceMail stopped working, any solution???

To fix voicemail go to setting -> general -> network -> cellular data and change the voicemail apn from wap.cingular to acds.voicemail

Thanks for the tip. Fixed my visual voicemail after tethering my iPhone 3G.

Changing the voicemail apn fixed my voicemail but then the tethering option disappeared. i had to reinstall to get it back. I'm on At&t with a iphone 3g.

Type Mailadress, Select carrier enjoy tethering

This got voted down but works perfectly, at least for tethering.
I put in my info, picked US ATT from the list on Safari on my iPhone, hit send and voila! It downloaded a mobileconfig file to my provisions page and when I opened, created the tethering option in Network page. Advice to contact ATT flashed but went away and I gaily set about setting up my iMac. Worked great. No trouble w/ my voicemail (though I did call myself and leave a message to check.

By no problems with voicemail, when you said you called your voicemail to check, did you mean to say that you were able to leave a message successfully, or that your visual voicemail still worked? I've tried a few things and can't get both tethering and visual voicemail to work (of course, leaving a message always works, its just that with tethering enabled i don't get notified when a message is left).

File does not work on Iphone 3.0 "invalid profile" is all I get when I try to open it

Does somebody know if this is reversible? If they come out with a new update that will screw this up?
