Hacks enable MMS on first generation iPhones and tethering on 3.12 OS

In a series of tweets today, iPhone Dev team leader, MuscleNerd, revealed some hacks that might make your iPhone life a little more interesting.

First, there is a baseband hack called whiterat that will allow 2G iPhones to send and recieve photo MMSes.  Apple's 3.0 update only enabled MMS on iPhone 3G and 3GS models.  Nifty!

Next up is a two-bit (not $.25) baseband hack that will re-enable sweet, sweet tethering on the most recent 3.1.2 iPhone OS-updated iPhones.  The previous tethering hack only worked on iPhone 3.0 software and firmware.

AT&T isn't likely to enable tethering until 2010.

Both of these are pretty hardcore, as they mess with your iPhone's baseband.  That definitely means that they fall into the "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK" category.  As he and we remind you, this could also cause AT&T to do some extra gouging to your phone bill.

That being said, let us know if you've had any success in trying these or if there are easier ways to acomplish the above.

Both hacks work! I have an old 2G iPhone that I can MMS on and I can tether again on my 3GS with 3.1.2 firmware.

The dev(s) are awesome!

I haven't tried either hack yet, but I'm been hoping for BOTH a 2G (on T-Mo) and a 3GS (on AT&T)... just need to make sure these hacks don't screw-up unlocking going forward...

Does this hack disable the tethering data monitoring that the carrier file that accompanied 3.0 brought with it?

I'm assuming that this doesn't work on 3.1 3GS? I have tried multiple times and it didn't work. I guess I figured 3.12 meant 3.12 and on down. If not...do I have to upgrade then jailbreak again in order to get tether?

My 2G iPhone with 3.0 already had MMS enabled with ActivateMMS2G (Cydia)...

I cannot make it work. It says tethering but firefox says that i have no connection?

I've tried ActivateMMS2G on my 1st gen running 3.0 several times and it has never worked.

Is there a way for this to work without jailbreaking?!?!!!!!!!??????????

You have to do the jailbreak now!!!!

If you have your iphone jailbreak you can do it with PDANET through WiFi or with MyWi through Bluetooth, USB or Wifi. Both could be download on Cydia. MyWi reactivate the Tethering on the iPhone's setting the old way.... I think is the best. You can install the Trial and then delete it through SSH or just paid a 1 fee 9.99 and it Works great! I am on the ROAD using it right now.... NOT DRIVING off course. I even video chat with my wife using my macbook pro and iphone 3gs tethering (MyWi)

has anyone gotten the mms to work on ATT with the iPhone 2G?

People who are clueless about jailbreaking, unlocking, and hacking the iPhones should not write articles about it. It’s not a baseband hack. It’s a firmware hack. It’s not a two-bit hack. It’s a two-byte hack. “The previous tethering hack” was no hack at all. It was a settings upload, which is still required.

Cleve, nice post. I wanted to respond, however, by saying that there are methods for effectively preventing AT&T (and the other major carriers, for that matter) from engaging in the "extra gouging" you speak of. I actually work for the consumer advocacy website http://www.fixmycellbill.com (powered by a company called Validas) where we slash the average cell bill by 22 percent. Validas acts as the wireless bodyguard protecting you against frivolous charges that over-inflate 8 out of 10 cell bills. You can find out for free if fixmycellbill.com can modify your wireless plan to better suit your usage by going to the website.

For more info, check out Validas on Fox News at http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/consumer/conlaw/lower_cell_phone_bills_... .

Good luck to everyone reading on cutting your wireless costs, especially in this tough economy.
