iPhone 3-for-all

Look, we know what type of trouble we are asking for here, so let's get this out of the way first: You are responsible for what you do.  We take no responsibility for this information and if your iPhone explodes, we don't even care.

That being said, and only(!!) if you so choose, you can now download the 3.0 OS software from those nefarious torrent sites, or your buddy who is a iPhone developer.   You can then option/install it on your iPhone/iPod touch using iTunes and get a week jump on Apple's official release.  Also, remember to get the right firmware for your device.  iPhone 3G has different firmware than the original iPhone for instance.  Finally, consider that the 3.0 software updates the baseband, potentially making a SIM-unlock more difficult.

Before, to do update to 3.0, you'd need a developer to put your Device ID in a list.  Now, iPhones and iPod touches are activating normally without being "on the list".  Plus, this is the GM that we've been playing with for awhile and we can say that this is very stable and complete...plus, for some reason we can still tether on AT&T.

If you want to share your "experiences" in the comments, we're pretty sure the iPhone community would appreciate your help.

...and please, all of you goody-two-shoes out there, try to refrain from doing what you do.

the only question i have is the following: there are some rumors going around about the GM locking the phone into "testing mode". i know this prevents downgrades, but im hearing it could also prevent an UPGRADE to the legit 3.0 on the 17th.

now, apple has a pretty good track record when it comes to throwing around the GM title, but id hate to think weve lost the ability to upgrade normally, because we wanted to jump the gun by a week.

so essentially, can anyone confirm or deny to me, that this "testing mode" malarky is truth, or BS?

we've installed it on two different devices (iPhone 3G and 1st gen iPod Touch), both of which weren't on Apple's list and it has worked perfectly

Can anybody confirm that stereo bluetooth works? That's the pretty much the only reason I want to upgrade to 3.0.

I was trying to get it to work with my Motorola S805's but, the little Bluetooth icon wasn't showing up at the bottom in iPod mode.

Strangely enough, toggling the Silent switch on the side by the volume controls made it appear.

It works well. A little hinky when I lock the screen manually instead of letting it auto-lock.

hey there, does that only work for 3g or 2g as well. if it does work for 2g what am i doing wrong?

question is, which no-one can answer obviously, how long before its pwn'd ?

Here is the iPhone 3G version. Seed people, SEEEEED!!!!

Yes, seed the iPhone 3.0 GM please..!

You don't have to put the device id into a developer account. It's the GM seed. This is exactly what will be seeded via iTunes.

You don't know that 100%. There could be changes before the 17th that go in. Yes it's the GM, but they aren't burning it to millions of CDs, its a software download.

It's NOT a software download alone, it will be on all new 3GS devices. There won't be any changes until this piece of software can be officially downloaded.

Link above?

Did you download and install from the link above? Does that one work for the iphone 3g?

didnt work for me, getting a different one now

make sure you get the right version for your device.  otherwise, it won't work

Could someone explain how this effects existing data on the iPhone? From what it looks like, I can "restore" in iTunes with the GM firmware, but that will erase application data.

Just read the comment below and Option-Clicked on the "Check for Update" button. Worked like a charm and is currently installing.

It worked for me. I tried this during the Beta and was screwed because of the Dev activation that was needed. I had to get a new phone. I have a 16GB 3G, downloaded the IPSW, option-clicked Update, installed, and there was no prompt to activate. Wow, all I have to say is, 3.0 is so helpful. Hope you download it and try. Peace!

Hi i downloaded the iPhone 3.0 os for my 3g iphone but i do not know what to do next

Please help

Stephen

Downloaded the iPod touch 1st gen 3.0 firmware and installing now. I will report back if all goes well!

Worked great!

Please help. What do you mean by option clicked update etc...? I downloaded the thing linked above but don't know how to install it... Via iTunes? Because when I hit "look for updates" it obviously doesn't find anything. Sorry I'm a failure.

OK got it !!!

it works fine - you can upgrade your current 2.0 firmware in iTunes and not lose any data - all my apps still work perfectly and the phone has been running fine all day (installed last night), snappier than before even. seem to be losing the cool 'fade' action you get when quitting an app a lot of the time though.

Works like a charm on the 1:st generation iPod Touch.

Has anyone who has installed this successfully downgraded using option-restore?
