iPhone OS 3.1.3 is out on the town

Hit iTunes for your fresh copy of iPhone 3.1.3 (Build 7E18) which weighs in a 228.1MB.  The update "Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS" and "Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances".

Update: We've found that Apple has updated the Modem Firmware from version 5.11.07 to 5.12.01 on the iPhone 3G.

That means there is likely some more stuff going on behind the scenes - as per usual. Therefore, Jailbreakers are advising not to do the update.

Has anyone out there found any undocumented features/snappiness™?

PS: 3.1.3 closes the usb_control_msg exploit used by blackrain

Oh goody, no new features, ability to handle bifurcated iphone+ipad apps whenever those start coming out. Yawn.

A point release addresses issues only. If those issues bother you, than a point release is very exciting. If not, you don't even have to upgrade.

I'm currently doing this 3.1.3 update on my iphone 3gs....will update once its completed.

Nokia releases free drive and walk turn-by-turn navigation with offline maps (with updates); Apple releases bug fixes...
Fortunately I have both <:o)

Meant: Fortunately I have devices of both <:o)

Remember iPhone 1.0? Yeah the one without the App Store?

Sure, Nokia added a couple apps, Apple added 140,000+.

I don't care about quantity, rather about quality. Furthermore, that free navigation app has much more value to me, than any other of the available apps I found and/or bought/downloaded in the App Store.

Am jailbroken so won't updating until jailbreak feature is supported for 3.1.3

I've noticed that it seems a little quicker on the 3G than before the update

My 3G feels Snappier!

Seriously. But maybe it was just the reboot.

This is one of the reasons I'm losing interest in sticking on the iPhone platform; the lockdown mentality of Apple and the constant fear of upgrading the OS will permanently lock me out of the hacks I want on my phone.

Surely when you bought the iPhone you knew that it was a closed ecosystem controlled by Apple. The iPhone is no longer the only game in town, there are a number of equally great touch screen handsets on the market these days from equally reputable companies such as Palm, Motorola, HTC, Nokia, Google, etc.

I think that it is silly when people buy a product, accept the terms and conditions of use and then complain the terms of use that they accepted in the first place.

I am on my second iPhone (3G and 3GS) and I have stayed the course because I like the stability of the Apple controlled ecosystem. I also have 5 different Windows Mobile phones covering virtually all the OS generations up to 6.1, my wife has been a loyal Nokia user for a while and gave up when she upgraded her trusty N95 to the N97 which would have up to 10 restarts in a day (and I though Windows Mobile was bad); She is now the happy user of my old iPhone 3G.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that there is a fantastic touch screen handset out there for people who want the total freedom that you aspire. The iPhone is not any better or worse, its just a different (iTunes based) ecosystem.

I dont think most of us signed the contract accepting the terms of a closed "ecosystem", must of us have the intention of jailbreaking and taking a nice mobile platform to the highest platform available. Who would want to buy a junky touch screen like the ones mentioned if there are not thousands of developers working everyday to create new and better apps. the iphone will always have the highest amount of high quality apps than other brands. I have over $2000 of paid apps on my iphone 3Gs, none of which was actually paid for. Can you do that with anyother phone?

You mean you're upset that Apple keeps fixing bugs and closing security vulnerabilities? You *do* know that's how jailbreaking works, right? It takes advantage of things like buffer overflows that can allow arbitrary code execution...like blackra1n or redsn0w. Or maybe you'd like Apple to open the App Store to everyone, like the people who wrote the bank phishing app that ended up on the Android Marketplace?

I am still running 3.0.1 until tethering is enabled : /

(us too)

poor bastards... i use iPhone tethering over bluetooth for half a year now... It's great to not live in the USA ;)

Dude im running 3.1.2 with full tethering in the US (USB and Bluetooth). Its not that hard of a hack... super easy if your jailbroken already.

3.1.2 redsm0w enables tethering......

Did the update. No issues so far.

On my 3G, it took about 11 minutes to install via iTunes.

Perhaps coincidental:

I notice that the time on my iPhone is much closer to Standard time.

Previously, my iPhone clock seemed to be about 35 second behind Standard time. Now the clock seems to be within a second or so.

Ah! I've been running speedtest from work over 3g about once a week for the past year or so.

I ran it now, after I upgraded to 3.1.3 and got my best network performance ever on my 3G! Again, coincidental? Not sure, but its a good sign.

Seriously, I'm able to use tethering now on my officially unlocked 3G. Can't believe it, have been waiting for MONTHS now (including a ticket with Apple that tethering should be enabled on offically unlocked devices).

When I rebooted my phone the battery indicator was at 89% and switched to 96% after a few seconds... Strange

the main point of this update was probably to improve 3G performance and block out the only available jailbreak (blackra1n as if you didnt know)

Just updated on my unlocked iPhone (originally on TIM brasil they unlocked it for me after 1 week) and no problems working with this colombian sim card in medellin.

when your on safari with 8 tabs, when you press the thing to show the tabs there is now no lag when pressing it

Restart seems a lot faster. It used to take my iPhone about 2/3 minutes to boot up. It's now doing it in a couple of seconds.

2-3minutes for a reboot. I dont think it was the new firmware version that fixxed that. As any iphone in alright working condition would not take 2-3 minutes.
