OQO runs full Leopard - what doesn't anymore?Tue, 04/29/2008 - 04:51 — Cleve Nettles
The last few weeks were about Psystar selling Hackintosh PC's. Apple's lawyers usually swoop in within seconds to stop EULA 'violations' like this. On Psystar, they are eerily quiet. Psystar is shipping clones and customers are receiving them. What does all of this mean? Perhaps Apple is considering licensing the Leopard OS out to PC vendors. Maybe they'll sell it as a virtual machine? Or perhaps a paired down version for Web browsing, and iTunes? Most likely not but it is kinda weird all of this Leopard on PC stuff. It seems a little too easy.

I hope, Apple will bring
I hope, Apple will bring leopard for pc's soon.
M$ would be out of the market for all time...
Mac OS X and the Macintosh
I certainly hope not. What makes the Mac OS X so great to use, is the mac-experience. And you would never, ever be able to get the full experience whil running mac os on pcs. First off, Mac OS X is developed for the Machines from Apple specifically, and that is what makes them so great. Beacuse Apple knows which hardware are present in the host machine, they also will know how to get the most out of that setup, and that is what makes OS X so great and snappy to use, even on computers which are much lower specced than its pc counterpart. Anyways, i also would think that using OS X would not be the smae o na pc, because you do not get the "cosy" feeling that you get by running it on a mac. It feels more exclusive. Instead of running som shit that everyone is running, mac users are priviledged to run the great software mac OS X. I know this myself, because, the reason i first bought a mac, was because of my experience with Hackintosh. I got the ideas of how nicely the os and the machines where bundled together, but i did not get the fully experience, because of the hardware who did not match the software that nice. So i MacBook, and i am very satisfied with it. On the PC, i hope, and believe that Linux distros, like ubuntu will make it throug windows.
I believe Apple is holding
I believe Apple is holding still as they know that cloners will be soon out of the picture. Apple will put in new hardware features unique to apple that will kill Leopard on standard PCs.
For now things like these are great to show people not yet willing to buy Macs how great the OS is.
Agree with X-Fade, it's the
Agree with X-Fade, it's the symbiosis of hardware and software that makes OS X ultimately great to use. There are too many variables in the way PCs are made for there to be a similarly integrated platform. And I know it's a bit luddite, but I kinda hope that OS X doesn't get beyond a 10% market share so I can keep on not worrying about worms, trojans and other nasty little critters.
Maybe both?
I wouldn't mind if they were to make two versions of Leopard, one that goes on PCs and another for Macs. But they might, since their Mac sales will decrease. Maybe if they started to sell Macs at reasonable prices, then they would be able to compete... but that's not like the Apple I know.
Sales decrease?
I don't think that sales decrease. If you read current statistics (http://www.9to5mac.com/apple_laptop_drive_market_gains) you'll notice that Mac sales are far away from decreasing. And: I don't think that Apples prices are not reasonable. If you look at the entry model for the iMac or also current MacBook Pros (mine cost only 1800,- Euro, fair price compared to competitors with same quality), these prices are absolutely fair. I think Apple should keep MacOSX from being used on PCs; I agree with X-Fade!
Keep other junk out...
Apple just need to port some good apps, albeit safari/itunes on PC and keep other stuffs out
