iPhone version 1.1.1 vs. Hacked Version
Thu, 09/27/2007 - 13:58 — Chauncey Dupree
Apple, as expected released the iPhone 1.1.1 software update today. Initial reactions are that it breaks the anySIM hack and Installer.app so this is a one way street. We know it is tempting to hit the red button and download and install but hold on just one second while we let you take a gander at the pluses and minuses.
Listed on the 1.1.1 updates page is the following:
- iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store;
- Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
- Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites of music controls
- Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
- Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
- Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
- Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
- Support for TV Out
- Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
- New Passcode lock time intervals
- Adjustable alert volume
Not bad for a incremental update but nothing earth shattering. We think Apple could have called this 1.0.3 but when you juxtapose (triple word score) these features with what you get in the 1.0.2 HACK version you may want to pause..at least until everything becomes clearer..
Read on for the full comparison between the two OS's.

Nice table! All the other sites rushing to be the first to post about this update and looking silly doing it, but you guys actually bother to put together a comprehensive table of what you get with both.
I think there's a few things on the Apple list that are tempting (louder speaker for one), but not enough to lose the hacked stuff.
One other thing comes with
One other thing comes with the update... Faster JavaScript, 30-40% faster on the parts of my benchmark that were inexplicably slow before. So as a dev I'm quite happy with the update :)
Warning! The update
Warning! The update generates an error and requires a full restore and reinstall of ATT even for those who have not hacked or installed apps. If you have photos save them before even downloading the update as there is no warning of the restore. All other data (weather cities, stocks, map bookmarks, notes) survived the restore despite the onscreen warnings.
This is not one of Apple's better updates! But, at least they did not brick my phone and have allowed me the right to continue to use the device I bought and paid for.

What's the big deal? In about a week, everything in the hacked column will probably become available again.

I don't know if this works
I don't know if this works or not.. but I read you can restore on another machine that has not gotten the 1.1.1 update yet.
Just make sure you yank the Ethernet cable (or turn off the airport) before you do the restore so it doesn't download the 1.1.1 version..
That sounds like it might
That sounds like it might work, gotta try it when i get home.

No, you can't. 2007 is starting to look a lot more like 1984 :-(
If you buy an iPhone now (or
If you buy an iPhone now (or on nov 9th in europe), it would probably contain V 1.1.1. Is there a possibility to downgrade the software?
If you buy one now (like
If you buy one now (like right now - not in a few weeks) you will probably get one with 1.0.2.
IT is possible that a downgrader will be invented - but that hasn't happened yet - it is all software so it surely is possible
When someone buys an iPhone,
When someone buys an iPhone, they know the price and they know they are bound to AT&T. They made the choice & now are screaming that Apple is not playing fair. Give me a break! I think it's funny.
Actually, I bought an iPhone
Actually, I bought an iPhone from Apple (not AT&T). Under the DMCA it is legal to unlock a phone for personal use. I chose to dowit.
Now my iPhone took your iPhone outside on the playground after recess and wooped the living shit out of it.
And you are sad. :'(

The phone is not subsidized by AT&T, so they are not bound to AT&T in any way whatsoever. GSM allows for SIMS to be switched, and any other GSM phone can be easily unlocked, and it's legal for the owner to do so. Apple releasing updates that intentionally prevent the OWNER from using the phone in a way they are legally entitled to is dirty pool. Sure Apple is ALLOWED to do it but it's real greasy of them. It is usual of Jobs' standard operating procedure though, which is why I have never bought an Apple product... Jobs seems to hate letting the owner of an Apple product actually have complete control over it (see for another example the new Ipods, where Apple has authenticated encrypted firmware to prevent 3rd party firmware, AND tried to rig it to force Itunes use.. The new ItunesDB is encrypted and authenticated, and the Ipod rigged to not recognize music that is just dragged onto the Ipod hard drive. This didn't really work, the new ItunesDB format was reverse enginnered within a few days..but the only purpose of this new ItunesDB was to try to lock out 3rd party software. Any other MP3 player, the user can use a music manager of their choice (including Itunes) or drag music on and off hard-drive style.. honestly, if an Ipod owner wants to use software besides Itunes, why should Jobs try to stop them? But he does.)
it is very easy to downgrade
it is very easy to downgrade the phone to 1.0.2 - find the update in download form (google search) and once you have it on your mac hold the option key when you push the restore button in itunes - it will pop up asking for you to locate the file - and voila 1.0.2 iphone
wrong 1.1.1 changes the
wrong 1.1.1 changes the modem firmware 1.0.2 no longer will work once it is up to
Boy, I wish you table was
Boy, I wish you table was actually accurate. It makes rational people immediately realize you're just trying to PERSUADE and not INFORM. For example, if you're going to even mention "web games" (like the excellent retro-Duck Hunt or Bejeweled) for 1.1.1, when comparing it to the NES support or PigShooters of the hacked world, then you should mention Bejive for 1.1.1, which BLOWS AWAY all of the native versions, on EVERY level, except signaling while you're in another application. That's all it has over Bejive. Bejive supports MORE IM services, and the Interface is MUCH more mature. Moreover, Telekenesis is the remote client for 1.1.1. There is a Web VNC server as well, on the Windows side, but you'll need to admit that VNsea was still fledgling. It wasn't much better for remote control, and actually not as good for all the other things Telekenesis does extremely well (remote file browsing for instance).
My point is... yes, it damages your argument, but be a WEE bit honest. It helps your creditability and makes you even more of an authority, and not simply another whining user that doesn't have his facts straight. Seriously.
