Apple’s iTunes empire seems set to meet a bigger than normal threat, on news former ally Google now plans its own online music service.

Details on Google’s music plan are vague right now, we don’t know if it will be offering a la carte downloads, music streaming, subscription services or what - it’s all open to speculation.

TechCrunch is reporting that multiple sources are discussing the Google plan, with the company “spending the last several weeks securing content for the launch of the service from the major music labels.”

The report suggests the name of the service might be ‘Google Audio’. The service will reportedly be available for US users.

UPDATE: "Google will partner with iLike and LaLa for their new music service, we’ve learned. And the announcement date is Wednesday, October 28, 2009." Service to be integrated into Google Search! (For some reason I feel unhappy about that - like - the world's biggest search engine selling music through the search engine? Doesn't feel right, somehow). Read it here.

Eric Schmidt is the biggest

Eric Schmidt is the biggest weasel on the planet.....

Imagine serving on Apple's board all that time knowing full well that your are implementing a business plan that clearly makes you a direct and significant competitor in core businesses.

Android software
Android hardware (as revealed very recently)
an online music service
an app store
Chrome
a netbook OS

I don't care if he did resign. Knowing what he knew as CEO he should never have accepted the Apple board position or resigned long ago. I'm certain Mr. Jobs must be silently fuming about the little prick.

Use your cash Apple and get that server farm open.

In fact I wonder if there was

87

In fact I wonder if there was such a conflict of interest that he could be questioned in the future over the legality of his accepting that position.

He's truly a scum bag

ok this is a bit much. Why

109

ok this is a bit much. Why can't Google just focus on what it was set up for...search engine. Try spending more time on making it a better experience and less on copying ideas from others. Plus i don't even trust Google with anything i mean now theres reports that private voicemails are searchable or were on Google from their Google Voice service!! WTF?? They are trying to be the next MS and I have a feeling that it will backfire.

yep

77

they are simply getting into too many businesses. I suppose so far they aren't losing money, but there will come a point when they will invest too much money into yet another business that had nothing to do with their core and it will suffer because they will fail at it. Much like MS and the zune--though still recalcitrant about it with the "HD" that too will go the way of its shit colored predecessors. And MS will be left with a pile of money burned.

Google is headed to the same path...succumbing into me-tooism copying. Their brand is also suffering. They used to be extremely admired and anything with a Google logo was seen by the public as gold. No so much with the drip drop of privacy concerns for a few years now. Google is starting to be seen with caution as they expand more and more by people. And that will ultimately cause them problems.

obviously you do not

79

obviously you do not understand google... they are a large company, and can do whatever the hell they want. what people like you dont understand is how one company can have different focuses. there is a reason why they hire thousands of people. not everyone at google is going to work on making google a good search engine...

I'm sure you said the same thing

66

about GM and their expansions. Hey look they had soooo many employees!

the fact is the Google brand is not getting any better over time. It doesn't matter how many people Google has working under it, if they expand so far out beyond their core business they will suffer eventually. The worst thing for a company is for its customers to lose their trust in the company, and there is no denying that privacy concerns and what Google is doing with your information in all aspects of its business are increasing by the day. Google is turning into big bad Google in the public perception little by little.

why use GM as an example? did

66

why use GM as an example? did you forget about Microsoft?

This is only true to an

65

This is only true to an extent. Talent is a finite resource. Your most brilliant people might bring the company a ton of money, but that money can't necessarily buy more of the same. You can get more PEOPLE, but the number of truly brilliant people doesn't increase just because you have money.

There's always a risk that you might spread your top talent too thin. I don't necessarily think Google has to confine itself to search, but I they're aiming at two areas that will require a ton of effort and money to succeed in (Wave and the OS). The music thing really does seem like a pointless and asinine diversion. And I think it WILL raise some eyebrows if Google somehow magically succeeds where so many iTMS competitors have failed. It will necessarily cause people to ask what information was inappropriately transferred from Apple to Google via Schmidt. Indeed, it's already doing just that.

You guys fail to realize that

78

You guys fail to realize that Google is a CIA invested company. Soon after Google started, the CIA went up to them and was interested in the development of certain privacy invading technologies and the end result is a huge-I-got-a-picture-of-your-house-now (Street View) company that offers free cell phone service that records every conversation. But it's FREE!! So who cares right?

Everytime you use their search engine it logs YOUR information. Start looking at another alternative. Check out startpage.com and check their privacy rules. They don't record your IPs for ANYTHING.

USE STARTPAGE AND STOP USING CIA FUNDED SPOOKGLE.

That is true as sad as it

87

That is true as sad as it sounds.

Facebook is another one that is invested in. Think about it if they wanted to track as many people and their friends/connections on the internet how better than to have the person fill out their favourite music and movies etc for them.

Google was fine for search until it became a dictionary standard word. Then it kind of became all too real that it was getting too big, but bing(bong) isnt going to really get the people swapping because its still a MS product.

One of the reasons MS is gaining market share with it is by buying out yahoo and then making all its search engines/pages bing. suddenly joe average is too lazy to open a search page from his vista box that loads IE and MSN search by default and boom! you have market share.

Eventually these companies will come unstuck by smaller ones that have the "pirate" ethos similar to apple back in the day.

Note** id switch to .me for my mail and not gmail but its hard to justify the cost atm.

Oh, good, another US-only

66

Oh, good, another US-only service. Taking the "World" out of World Wide Web.

I know Hulu's advertisers don't want to pay for the bandwidth for people outside their target market, but you'd think that Google would be able to manage it with their model.

gee, do you think it has more to do with COPYRIGHT law instead??

What a bunch of fanboi's, seriously! Get over yourselves. 9to5 has become a "hate everything else and always support Apple regardless of how lame THEY become" forum.

Nice work there sport on the triple posting. Way to really put your message across without sounding like a company troll.

keep up the good work :)

If there's one good thing

68

If there's one good thing about Apple facing competition vis-a-vis iTunes is that every service that launches with a major brand behind it means Apple is that much less likkely to be accused of monopolistice practises - after all, it can argue that its iTunes marketshare isn't for want of competition, but simply because consumers prefer the service. In that respect, Google's doing AAPL a favour.

Spotify

64

It would be nice to have a tie-in/lynk to music buildout like spotify does. with the addition of adding links to purchasing from amazon (most likely) or iTunes (less and less likely).

Is it me or is Google

56

Is it me or is Google becoming like the monopolizing companies it set out to "destroy"?

Competition is always good

38

I live outside the US, I've got an Iphone, but only have access to some apps (not the ones I want) legally, and music, movies, videos... zip, nothing, if Google comes out with a World store with no boundaries they might just have a very big shot... unless Apple is thinking of expanding (which I doubt)

it's good business

48

Google makes it's money selling ads around search. If they can get more searches by partnering with music sellers, than it increases it's core business.

Just like Apple realized their growth in computers was limited, they branched out into music players, a phone, and online music and software sales, which in turn helped increase sales of their computers.

Google Wants to Dominate.. Any violent reactions?

39

From owning yahoo, up to becoming the top 1 most searched website. Google is naturally hyped on dominating services

We all know that iTunes and Yahoo Music! is there. lets just see how Google will Manage to be on top, now that they finally released their official statement of launching a Music service.

Lot of you guys are just

48

Lot of you guys are just funny when it comes to your criticism of Google. Some of you where saying they shouldn't expand beyond their core business. Apple did and I don't hear you complaining. I'll bet Google music business will be a success if they integrate it into Google search. Honestly, if you integrate anything to Google search its hard not to make it success = amount of exposure is just mind blowing.

Anyway, I'm just a mac user and not a share holder so any competition is good for consumers like me.

It makes a lot of sense for

83

It makes a lot of sense for Google to launch their own store now that they have Android & sometime next year will have Chrome OS. If you look at the apps they've been developing overtime or companies they've been buying it is clear that for a long long time they've been building the base for a media rich OS that can compete directly with OS X. Apple probably isn't too concerned anymore than Lexus would be concerned about Chrysler entering the luxury car genre.

It's Microsoft who really should be shaking in their boots, they are behind the game on just about everything. They got so used to having a stranglehold on their market that they completely ignored the rapidly growing cloud computing movement that is also locking focus on 100% cross-platform functionality. All Microsoft knows how to do is proprietary, they just don't really get how to make money without forcing the masses into their formats. If Chrome OS is a hit, combined with Google Apps & who knows what else, Microsoft is screwed.
