Google Chrome for Mac ships by Christmas?

Google Chrome for Mac should be ready in a “couple of months”, former Apple board member and current Google CEO, Eric Schmidt has said.

(Note: This of course refers to the browser, as referenced in the para second below, where Schmidt refers to browser speed.)

Schmidt appeared this week with Google co-founder Sergey Brin to discuss the state of the technology and search markets, and projects including Chrome and Android.

"I see a lot of Macs in this room, and a lot of very sophisticated people are using Macs now,” affirmed Schmidt. “We need to get a version of Chrome out for that, which we’ll have in a couple of months. The key to browser strength is speed.”

Google had intended Chrome for Mac to appear in the first half of 2010, but it may at least ship before Christmas.

The company claimed Chrome adoption rates to be exceeding internal targets, but that slowness in introducing a Mac version had slowed uptake.

Chrome WHAT?! Browser? OS? Yet another ridiculous, poorly written article by J Evans

Of COURSE he means the Google Chrome OS that will Run on Mac OS. Makes total sense!

Use your brain. Do you really think he might mean the "Google Chrome OS for Mac OS"?

This my friend, was something called "sarcasm".
Next time, I'll use the tag ...

Right "PZ".

Your constant sniping is becoming annoying.

If you don't like my stuff, don't read it.

However, if you want to criticise my work in a public forum, then would you mind stepping outside the safety of your anonymity, and telling me who you are and who you write for, in order that I can pop over to wherever that is from time to time and put you down in public for your mistakes?

And if you aren't prepared to do that, then thanks for your input, but unless you have some kind of social problem, I see no sense or profit for you in being snide.

I'm presuming I know you, by the way. In which case, it's not just snide, but also fairly cowardly.

I've updated the story, thanks to your input.

why would anyone try to install an OS on top of an OS???
Mah Pokemans, let me show you them!

I dunno maybe it can be installed with boot camp or something.

We have Safari already. Chrome is just a knock off using WebKit. There wouldn't even be a web kit (as it is now) if not for Safari.

No way Chrome is going to outdo Safari, IMHO.

I've been using Chrome Beta (Chromium for macintosh) for a while now and it rocks. It's not finished yet, there are still some things to add, but the speed is really amazing. Try it, you might like it!

This is just my non-benchmarked observation but I've been using the Chromium beta for awhile too - I upload the daily refresh versions 2 or 3 times a week - and I wouldn't say the ”speed“ or any other feature is patently superior to Safari. No compelling reason to ”switch“ other than the novelty effect.

Dude, I didn't say anything about it being 'superior' to Safari. Keep using Safari if you like. Personally, I can't wait until Chrome for Macintosh is done. I enjoy having more than one choice of browsers, no matter who made them. Opera, Shiira, Flock, Camino, iCab, SeaMonkey, there are probably others.

The problem I have with Google is that I think they are just a marketing company using search, browsing and any other software they can give away just to gather more and more of our information to sell. All of their revenue is from ad sales, so it's obvious that they want a bit of every large or growing market segment out there. Microsoft wants their software everywhere so you have no choice but to pay them for it, but what is Google's plan for their free software everywhere, on everyone's platform? Sorry if I sound paranoid.
