Google officially enters the OS Wars with Chrome OS

Google's huge announcement this evening that it will push an open source, instant-on OS which runs on both Intel/AMD and ARM platfoms will be an interesting developement for Apple users.  The new ChromeOS will make use of HTML5/CSS (like the Pre) which will allow applications for Chrome to also run on browsers (Chrome the best probably) on Mac, Windows and other variants of Linux.  Chrome now looks like it is more a platform (like Adobe Air) than a browser.

The Chrome OS aims to be a simple OS geared toward Netbook-type devices.  Google touts "Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS".  The OS won't be officially released for at least a year, but the hype surrounding it will certainly make other OS vendors take notice.  The Netbook category is undeniably a huge space and Google hopes to get a foothold in it.

While it doesn't seem to be in direct competiton to any of Apple's current products, if Apple plans to release any products that fill the gap between the iPod Touch and the MacBook, there might be some overlap.  It still may be time to reconsider that board seat that Google CEO Eric Schmidt is holding.

The more the merrier (for consumers)

Part of me says "Yay, Google's entering the fray!" I love Chrome and, of course, Gmail.

Then I remember what a big disappointment Android has been so far and my excitement level drops a little. Although, to be fair, Android hasn't even been out a year yet.

Yes, this will compete with Windows and Mac, but it may also compete with Ubuntu... BIG TIME. Though, it can't hurt to have consumer-friendly Linux platforms out there, I guess.

Consumers will win!

Based on what little I've heard...

I'm not really expecting this to go anywhere big. They've already said that the application platform is the Web itself, as in, it won't be aimed at running existing Windows, Mac, or Linux software. There aren't very many companies currently putting out compelling web applications that can run as well or nearly as well as their desktop counterparts. Really, Google is about the only big one doing it. I'd be happy to eat my words in a year or two, but I just don't see that happening, given the state of the Web today.

I know you Microsofties are desperate to break up the relationship between Apple and Google. It won't help you one bit, but I suppose you'll keep trying.

The implication that Google

The implication that Google and Apple actually share strategy and are carving up the market in unison is contrary to the fundamentals essential for Schmidt to even serve on Apple's board.

I suspect they dance around issues where they share markets but this latest move makes it less likely the board relationship can continue. Either they swap spit soon or Schmidt resigns.

Holy crap. Google getting

2738

Holy crap.
Google getting behind Linux means real trouble for Microsoft. Google has a lot of cash it can use for leverage, to make software deals that Linux has not been able to get until now.

It should just work.

3335

"And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

I don't think they are 'getting behind Linux' - it will just work on linux. On netbooks it would be a linux replacement.

This could be a good thing. The Google brand is popular and mostly trusted.

i told ya so

i told ya so

i think it's just what Linux

4032

i think it's just what Linux has been missing, a BIG company behind it to really push it and have developers work in-house on it. Something like Moblin but Google's integration with Google Apps will make this a wonderful product for netbooks and maybe an iTablet? Quick startup, check your email, browse the web, check your calendar etc.

90% of what we do with a computer. Can't wait!

Interesting Progression

Im very excited to see what GOogle can offer us with an operating system. Typically one thing Google is always good at is integration, realising everyone wants everything in one place. Looking at how they are moving with the cloud computing world and offline support for their web apps, an OS is the next logical step to tie it all together

Competition is good. However,

3831

Competition is good. However, Google's OS will likely be the most invasive OS ever released, with more reporting/spidering of your activity, lifestyle, hobbies, etc. than any other. All of that info being funneled into data mining centers.

Wait and see.

GOOGLE IS SKYNET

3337

DONT DOWNLOAD! GOOGLE IS SKYNET! DONT YOU SEE WHATS HAPPENING HERE!!!

Skynet

3040

This is so true but people are mindless and will go 'Oh Wow Googgle OSess rockz' download it and Google will take over and that will be the end of the world - or- they will just sell every last detail to whoever wants it and businesses will own your ass.. get pwned or die

Apple Netbook

3832

Considering Apple's good relationship, has anyone ever considered that, if Apple makes a netbook, instead of re-doing their own OS for smaller screens and less powerful processors, that they might use a Google OS?

If we've learned anything

3435

If we've learned anything about apple's software/hardware strategy over the years, we've sure noticed that apple never sells hardware without being tightly coupled with its software (it works vice versa as well)

It's for desktops too

3931

It's not only for netbooks but it's going to be for desktops/laptops as well.

If they pull this off it's going to be the gamechanger from Google we all wanted.

Look out Microsoft! ........and you too apple. ;)

'Big Announcement' ?? Did you

'Big Announcement' ??
Did you READ the article? It's nothing but a boot-to-browser system that runs on a linux kernel. I can already do that, and I don't need Google or Chrome for it either.
I don't expect this to go anywhere big, and the fact that your trying to pass it off as such, I find sad.

I don't know about you, but I like to be able to actually use my netbook when I don't have internet access, I'm not seeing any promises that this Chrome OS will work in those cases.

Personally, I'm never going to be able to take 'Chrome' seriously until Google gets rid of that silly 'Simon Says' electronic game look of their logo.
