Hon Hai grabs iPhone 2.0 as Gartner clarifies earlier claims

Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. has secured the manufacturing deal for the second generation of Apple's iPhone, as the analysts at Gartner backtrack on their claims of earlier this week.
Recall the heady days of Wednesday, when the analysts at Gartner are alleged to have claimed Apple to have begun production of the 3G iPhone? Well, it seems the analysts aren't so sure after all.
As iPod Observer saw it, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney cited his shadowy Asian sources to make the claim that the new version of the device had entered manufacturing.
True or false, Dow Jones this morning reports that Hon Hai will produce the second generation iPhone, described as a "more advanced version". Many analysts consider the new breed of the device could appear in June.
To preserve secrecy, Apple could even circumvent the need to file FCC documentation for the US version of the device by launching it outside the US first. 3G isn't well-supported in the US, but support for the 3G standard is emerging as essential to massage demand for iPhone in the European and Asian markets.
Returning to those folks at Gartner, the analysts now say they just don't know if manufacturing has begun, but remain convinced the new iPhone will offer 3G support (uh-huh?) and may be equipped with an OLED screen, making for a thinner device with longer battery life and better green credentials.

Easy guess

Hahaha...

"but remain convinced the new iPhone will offer 3G support (uh-huh?) and may be equipped with an OLED screen"

That's an easy guess :D

funny tough that they would launch it outside the US first...

still waiting for it in Canada :D

Just a notion

Yeah, I'm flying the notion of an ex-US release. While it flies in the face of Apple's previous moves, it's worth a thought - after all, 3G is what is stymied iPhone sales outside the US, in the US it's not so advanced, so why not sidetrack the FCC by releasing in Europe etc first?

iPhone 2.0

Definately 3G with the Broadcom SOC.

No OLED for definate due to the tech being difficult to implement and expensive at the moment.

Whatever capabilities it has

Whatever capabilities it has it is gonna sell like mad. These iPhones freakin' rule! I can't wait to sell the first gen version and get iPhone 2.0.

OK. Say they start producing

OK. Say they start producing iPhones. Launch overseas. Apply for FCC approval. It fails. Then what? They can't sell the phones in the U.S., that doesn't make sense...

The 3g iPhone will not fail.

The 3g iPhone will not fail. I have people daily coming into my store wanting to buy the iPhone to send over seas.

"The 3g iPhone will not

"The 3g iPhone will not fail."

I'm pretty sure they mean if it fails the FCC approval process, not if it won't be popular.
