iPod Nano video vs. Flip

In the battle for the low end video recorder, Apple's iPod nano is staking its claim vs. the Flip. But is the video out of the Nano as good as the Flip?  NewTeeVee did a side by side and you can see there are some differences:

While the Nano is good for its size, there are obvious areas where the Flip and its bigger lens grab better quality video. Perhaps this is the reason that Apple kept this camera out of the iPod touch?

flip all the way!

Flip wins, but the iPod camera is better than I thought it would be. Acceptable for on the run quicky Videos. I wish it took stills however.

Great comparison. Flip is definitely better quality. If you don't have an iPod Nano or don't want one, but want video recording, Flip seems to be the way to go if you care about the quality (albeit slightly -- it isn't great!).

But if you have a Nano and want to upgrade, or you were thinking of getting a Nano and now you could record some basic video if you get the fancy to do so, the Nano still seems good enough - why by a music player and a camera if you can get both? (remember - if you hate Apple you weren't going to get a Nano anyway, even if the camera was HD 1080p)

Still, great job by the folks who did the comparison! Kudos!

where are these dumb apple fan boys to "prize fight" them now!

Where is apple to say that they design only the best devices? Obviously Nano is the worst here!

But the iPod is a music player, Flip is a dedicated video camera. I don't think there ever was a major contest on who had better quality. It's an iPod that plays music with a video cam, Flip is only a video camera.

Yeah, you're a pretty dumb sh*t. You could saftely fit four or five iPod Nanos inside the flip.

...and don't forget the movies, music, games, accelerometer, and other features found in the nano.

YOU FAIL, BOI.

Here I am, an Apple Fan Boy. But where is Full Comparison? Can you play Music on Flip? What about Pedometer? and Does Flip come with built in FM Tuner? Compare everything and then talk to me!

They should have gone back and forth with the audio tracks.

The nano was obviously gonna be worse though. I can't imagine anyone actually thought it could be anywhere on the flips level. What makes the nano better though is all the other things it does besides record video

There's a difference?

I wonder if the iPod Nano had any finger prints on the lens. That could have made the image quality worse than it really is.

i bet your cock is covered in mens' fingerprints

what about the flip vs an iphone 3gs? Which is better?

My head's spinning..

Flip appears to look a little better. But your angles inside were not at all comparable. The Nano was heavily back lit with windows behind the subject. The flip had walls w/o window glaring in. The iris of the nano looked quicker. When you pointed to the sky light the Nano irised down very fast. I would like to see a better more comparable test before deciding.

Ps. I have been shooting video for 25 years and work with a very high end digital camera... just so you know my view point.

Flip's definitely got more resolution and sharpness. But it's going to come down to whether people want to buy, and carry around, a discrete device for video that's 10x as big as a multifunction device.

how can you really ask if there's a difference? side by side it's as clear as day... I am a self-professed apple fanboy, but there's no contest here. side by side, the nano looks no better than a cell phone, but like stated before, you don't buy a nano to take video. video is simply something kind of cool to add on after the fact, just "one more thing" ;)

Flip looks like the winner to me.

The only variable that might have been controlled better would be to compensate for the nano's wider-angle lens. That difference meant the subject of the video, who was usually but not always in the center of the frame, filled more of the flip frame and therefore more of the focus & exposure metering would have been on him, whereas with the nano he's a smaller part of the whole frame, thus the focus and especially exposure MIGHT be more averaged for background, thus showing the person at a disadvantage. It's the old method we learned with digital cameras, that if we really want a subject in best focus and exposure, use a narrow focus point/meter point and make sure they're on the subject, not wandering the background. If this test were done again i'd like to see the nano mounted on an extension that put it closer to the subject, thus capturing a more similar view. Then the focus & exposure readings would be more comparable.

Having said all that, the Flip looks like the clear winner to me. I'd like to see the flip/iPhone 3G S comparo too.

thanks Tolstoy.

keep it within 8000 words next time.

The resolution is much better on the Flip. There's too much compression visible in the Nano, but the Flip has trouble with the whites. Take a look at the backgrounds in the Flip when it has a bright area. The 0:34 area for example, with mixed lighting shadow in the foreground and sunlight in the background. The background looks horrible. There are no good looking skies in the Flip.

I wouldn't want either one for video that I really cared about.

"I wouldn't want either one for video that I really cared about."

Just like no one cares about what you think.

Wow! Douche much?

Just another stupid & pointless test/review... So stupid, I could expect these guys coming out with a comparison review between iPhone 3GS's mic and a 300$ mic by Blue Microphone (ex. the Bluebird) - I mean WHAT IS THE POINT OF COMPARING A MULTIMEDIA PLAYER/ENTERTAINMENT MACHINE (that just was added to it video-recording) AND A VIDEOCAMERA?!?!?!?

AND EVEN MORE STUPID, are the ones typing "Oh, Flip is clearly the winner!" - FLIP CAN'T PLAY MUSIC, VIDEOS, FM RADIO, GAMES & RECORD YOUR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE YOU STUPID SHEEP!!!!!! (I can't believe how all this human IQ has evaporated...)

While the Flip looked clearer to me, I thought the nano reacted to movement quicker and there seemed to be less delay on the nano. Don't know what audio track they were using but the Flip video was always slightly behind the audio and the nanos video. Also seemed smoother on the nano.

Wow, flip is gay. It can't even play music, how retarded. Overpriced since it can only do one thing, and it's only mediocre video camera. What's sony good for any more? Everquest? lolz
