Flash on iPod Touch and iPhone?

Tue, 02/12/2008 - 07:06 — Chauncey Dupree

We've got conflicting reports on this one so we'll just lay it all out on the table.  One of our sources who apparantly gets to play with upcoming iPhone builds says there is no Flash on the upcoming builds.  However, Gearlive, who outted the iPhone/iPod 1.1.3 software about three weeks before it went live, says they have seen it.

As Gearlive says, if it is coming a great time to announce it would be at the SDK event.

Personally, Flash is nice but we'd rather see Apple focus on things like an iChat client or full stereo Bluetooth capability - but we'll take what we can get.

I read these everyday and love the news but don't understand a lot of what's being said. I figure if I'm already reading it and in class and bored i might as well learn SOMETHING. What kind of advantages would Flash give the iphone? I know flash is used for small internet based games but I am a complete noob to this so would anyone let me know?

To begin with, how about

To begin with, how about video?  Not just from YouTube, but everywhere else?  Better streaming audio as well.  Opens up a world of possibilities.

Hi Noob, Flash is a great

Hi Noob,

Flash is a great way to create multimedia interactive applications for webpage.  Many of the adds and videoclips you see on websites are flash based. As well, many of the games are flash based unless designed for iPhone using the web developper tools made available by Apple.

It would be nice to have because it is the one glaring ommission to a true desktop replacement browsing experience. If there was flash on the iPhone, many people would be even more inclined to use the webbrowser which now has only Java support that is missing.

Imagine getting any YouTube clip you wanted, not just those in the iPhone app, or playing Flash games.  It has some interesting possibilities, and is particular in its absence from Mobile Safari.

Hope that helps!

Finally the browser will be

Finally the browser will be truely complete!

Thanks for some ideas! I plan on buying an iphone in May when my sprint contract runs out. If the 3G phone is not out by then, I plan on waiting to get it. If I have a 3G iphone, will I be able to get rid of comcast for internet and just hook my phone up to to my computer to get internet? Is it not nearly as fast as comcast? Comcast is screwing me over in my area and limiting my speed. I pay for 6MBPS and I think I'm getting around 3 or 2. Kind of pathetic.

Flash is so integrated into the majority of web sites that the absence of it on the iPhone is very noticeable. While JavaScript can accomplish many of the tasks Flash creates in animation and QT can cover video, you cannot escape the fact that Flash is the overwhelming favorite of web designers in developing such web solutions. The use is ubiquitous.

So that's why we need Flash on the iPhone/iTouch...it completes the full web experience.

Flash is a GREAT way to

Flash is a GREAT way to deliver ads to the iPhone. Not only do you get to deliver a multi-megabyte applet with video and sound, you can also use the network, and force people to watch several ads at once. Cool!

In short, Webkinz users and advertisers would love Flash. But iPhone users will quickly tire of large downloads, poor performance, and poor battery life.

For these reasons, Flash is a non-starter on the iPhone, as its value is generally much much less than its costs.

how will flash be integrated

how will flash be integrated into the iphones? through a software update? or will it come out on new iphones only?

re: how will flash be

re: how will flash be integrated??

I looked at the Adobe mobile web site, and from what I can tell there, it looks like Adobe licenses a mobile version of Flash to OEMs. The OEMs are then responsible for integrating Flash on the device and there are different ways that they can do it. It looks like some devices have a "stand alone player" where if you download a Flash application that was published for one of the mobile versions (1.1, 2.1, 3.0), then you can play those apps (games, whatever). The OEM could also integrate the code into the device browser, which should allow you to see Flash content from web pages (though it looks like that is only available with the 3.0 mobile version???)
