Fixing the iPhoto 7 Export Bug

iPhoto plug-insiPhoto 7, part of the new iLife 08 suite, has some great new features, including the much-touted "events" categorization instead of "rolls," a better levels slider and a new "reduce noise" slider that clears up fuzz (and in the extreme can make your friends look like digital cartoons - nice).

The upgrade is not without its faults, however, and even the most simple of operations – exporting a photo – didn't seem to work. No dialogue box, no options, zilch. Frustrated users with doomsday declarations of iPhoto 7 have posted to the Apple discussions and Macrumours forum about this. A quick search of these yielded the solution from Silver Mac.

The culprit?

Broken plug-ins. It's not iPhoto 7 at all, but the compatibility of third-party plug-ins.  The most common problem seems to come from the Flickr exporter, but when that didn't work, a lot of trial and error removing plug-ins from my iPhoto contents revealed other problematic ones. To aid other users in the removal of the broken plug-ins, I've come up with the following list of plug-ins that are incompatible with iPhoto 7:

  • EasyShareExporter
  • Facebook
  • FlickrExport
  • FileExporter (but do keep FileExporter2)
  • iPhoto2Gallery
  • iPhoto2Gmail
  • Picasa
  • Shutterfly

Please feel free to add any others in the comments. iPhoto was up and running with full exporting capacity after I removed the FileExporter and FlickrExport plug-ins. If you are still unable to export, try carefully removing others one at a time.

If you were enjoying these plug-ins, fear not: MacUpdate already has a version of the Flickr exporter that is iPhoto 7-compatible. More are sure to come.

Nice! Fixed mine right up. Thanks!

Yep...me too. Shame on Apple for not posting this

this will surely get fixed in the first ilife 08 update

I'm not sure it makes sense that it would be fixed with the first iLife update, since the problem is not on Apple's side, but on the side of the third-party plug-ins.

The facebook photo album export plug-in also breaks the new iPhoto. I removed the plug-in and export now works. Hopefully updated plug-ins will be released soon.

Also HPPhotoExport.iPhotoExporter by HP breaks iPhoto!

Ofoto Express doesn't seem to work with iPhoto '08 either. Does anyone have a photo sharing solution which offers a working plugin for iPhoto instead of a browser based option?!?!

I too am suffering from the lack of support of iPhoto 7 and Picasa Web Albums Uploaders. The Google site says erroneously, that 'iPhoto 4.0 or above required to use the iPhoto plugin' but apparently didn't test this.

What you can do to access your original photos in iPhoto 7 is right-click on the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder, and select 'Show Package Contents'. In that folder you'll see Originals. Make an alias of this and put it in your Pictures folder. Through this, you can now easily access your original pictures that are in iPhoto, without having to launch iPhoto. Once into your Original folder, drag whichever pictures you'd like to upload to your online Picasa Web Album into the stand-alone application (Picasa Web Albums Uploader in your Apps folder).

Hopefully it won't be long before Google, or some enterprising developer, figures out how to get the Picasa Export feature working in iPhoto 7. Until then, this should do the trick.

Actually, after I removed facebook exporter and then started up iphoto, I was able to re-install it and it worked. My girlfriend and I are now using it without issues.
