Purple Violets premiers tonight. First direct to iTunes Movie in history

Mon, 11/19/2007 - 16:35 — Seth Weintraub

It actually looks pretty good. We love NY:D More importantly, it is making history as the first feature length film being directly released to iTunes. Will this model be a hit and this be a milestone or will this be a failed experiment? Find out for yourself by downloading it for just $12.99 (iTunes link) from the iTunes VIDEO Store.

Set in lower Manhattan, PURPLE VIOLETS is a relationship comedy about four friends from college ready for change. PATTI PETERSON (Selma Blair) is a promising writer, but her marriage and conventional job keep her from her dream. She longs to return to her writing, especially after running into her first love BRIAN CAHILL (Patrick Wilson), a successful crime novelist. KATE (Debra Messing) is Patti’s best friend since college. She’s a tough-talking schoolteacher who plays therapist to all Patti’s problems, while she’s got a few of her own. Despite Brian Cahill’s gorgeous Tribeca loft and perfect house in the Hamptons, he longs to write works of greater literary value. MURPHY (Ed Burns), his lawyer and best friend from college still carries a flame for his former girlfriend Kate, even though their relationship ended badly years ago, and she still holds a major grudge. When Patti sells Murphy a new apartment, and Brian publishes his personal novel, these old friends reconnect in unexpected ways with surprising results. PURPLE VIOLETS is a funny, yet touching story of four friends finding what they need to change their lives.

This looks a lot like the

This looks a lot like the movie Before Sunset.

11-20 at 1:30 am: iTunes now

11-20 at 1:30 am: iTunes now says "The item you are trying to purchase is no longer available" Apple must have some timing issues from pre-order to purchase time. Can't find it anywhere else on iTunes.

It still works for us.  It

It still works for us.  It might not be working outside of the US or people with US iTunes stores?

Did you click on the link above?

the page showed only

the page showed only "pre-order" for me. I clicked that but left the computer and when i came back there was no acknowledgement. How do i confirm a pre-order's been placed? I don't want to try the process again and risk buying the movie twice. And if my pre-order was recorded, when/how will the order be filled? Reasonable questions, i think; disappointing iTunes doesn't make the answers evident. (btw, when i checked my account for recent purchases this movie does NOT show up: maybe that's because it doesn't count as a purchase until the pre-order's "filled" or consummated; or maybe it doesn't show up because the pre-order wasn't properly placed. Any insights, anyone?

The preorder was over with

The preorder was over with sometime last night around 11 PM EST, and I suspect it had to do with Apple having the actual release waiting the queue. Once that happens, again, all guessing by me, the preorders are no longer allowed. I'd imagine their system has them place the actual movie or music up before tuesday, where its in a holding state, and then once it hits a certain time on tuesday, they have a script run to switch all those items waiting in the queue to an active state.

Either way, the movie is the same price now as it was with the preorder, with no extras for preordering early, so, no harm no foul :P

the iTunes music store is

the iTunes music store is still showing only "pre-order" option, no "buy" button, as i write this at 2:44p tuesday. so i'm not sure what's going on.

So itunes asks others to

So itunes asks others to sell movies for 9.99, yet they charge $13 for a straight to video movie? Eh, I'll purchase the aristocrats, laugh harder, and save a few bucks.

New movies are always start

New movies are always start out at $12.99. Only the older movies have the reduced price of $9.99.

I love the premise of

I love the premise of straight to iTunes releases, but i'm not paying 12.99 for what is essentially a B movie.

I tried to download it

I tried to download it tonight(the 20th) and got error messages from iTunes.
it won't let me buy the movie. Good going for the first movie direct to iTunes! What crap!

Well... I don't want to buy

Well... I don't want to buy the movie. How about renting it? There are so many movies to watch, I doubt I'll ever watch it more than once.

LAME! When you look for a

LAME!

When you look for a movie to go down in history as the first direct-to-internet-film, how about not choosing one that also wins in the categories "Most over-used and predicteable plot in film history", "Most careless actors" and "Most boring characters, with no depth what so ever"? I wonder how anyone can recieve a paycheck to make this sort of crap, and still sleep well at night.

you guys fucking complain

you guys fucking complain way too much.

you act like someone was trying to force you to buy this movie, like it was a lame textbook for a class.

what kind of movie did you think was going to be the first to premiere on itunes? a movie that was going to make millions if released in theatres?

no! this is a big risk both companies are taking here!

how about a little respect for this bold move towards a smarter way of media consumption?
