There's on-topic, off-topic and out of the blue, and the latter category today seems set to be filled by rumours The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - the Mormons, in other words, may be making a play to purchase online social networking service, Facebook.
It's no idle threat - the church reportedly has assets of $30 billion - and while the claims are based on 'friend of a friend' grade rumour...
Now - we can see the connection in a sense - one thing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has traditionally always been interested in is connections, in the genealogical sense, but we think they'd probably get a better deal (and a more grateful seller) if they made a play for the Friends Reunited website.
Anyway - the plot thickens - reports also claim the church has been making contact to say these rumours are unfounded... true or false, we thought you'd want to know about this one, while it blips in and out of the rumour mill.

religion has no place in the
religion has no place in the modern world, et alone the 'cyber' one. This mean they will get rid of the religion field as only one will be aloud? lol
You can be any religion you want in this life...
...once you're dead and gone they'll baptize you into theirs posthumously. :)
No Place in the Modern World
Dear Mr. No Place in the Modern World (two posts up from here):
You are living proof that modern atheism is a refuge for really dumb people who want to feel superior. "et alone"? I think you mean "let alone." "This mean they"? I think you mean "Does this mean?". "aloud"? I think you mean "allowed."
My advice is that you: (a) learn to spell; (b) learn grammar; and, (c) go read some Thomas Aquinas. After doing so, you might have a more informed opinion about the place of religion in the modern world.
And for the record, I am not a Christian or a member of any other organized religion. I'm just smart enough to know that "intellectuals" like Richard Dawkins are a passing fad.
or, you could get a life! and
or, you could get a life! and then you wouldn't need to criticize quickly typed comments on web-sites that you essentially agree with duh.
"You are living proof that
"You are living proof that modern atheism is a refuge for really dumb people who want to feel superior."
really? so is the internet where you can make posts this idiotic anonymously.
so what you're saying is science is full of dumb scientists who want to feel superior. not saying ALL scientists aren't atheists, but many, if not most, are atheists.
Ha ha ha
I am a Mormon and this made me laugh. I am not authorized to officially comment for the church but this is just completely laughable. Anyone that knows anything about the LDS Church knows this is completely and utterly bogus. The LDS Church is probably 100x less interested in buying Facebook than the Catholic Church. This is just complete hogwash and doesn't even deserve to be listed as a hinted possible upcoming rumor overheard by a friend of a friend. Come on. This article is just for page-views. This has absolutely nothing to do Macs and deserves no press from this site whatsoever.
If all the laughable headlines still aren't enough here are some more factual reasons why the LDS Church isn't interested at all.
The Church has their own genealogical site at www.familysearch.org. There is a new version (in beta and which I am helping test - http://new.familysearch.org) that will really revolutionize family history work. It is being released slowly throughout the church this year and next and isn't scheduled to be publicly available for another year or two. The application is specific to the needs of genealogy work just because Facebook has "friend" connections doesn't make it an even remotely useful tool for this type of work.
In summary, I don't see why they would be interested in Facebook when 1) They already have an application 90% finished that fits their needs 100x better, and 2) They aren't looking to run an ad supported social network just for the fun of it. They are focused on the things that are important to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging people to waste time on Facebook isn't on that list.
Can you tell your smarmy
Can you tell your smarmy tie-boys to stop bothering people? They won't listen to me.
Mormons. Jeez
God what a bunch of sick people you are. One of my co workers just went on a church "hate walk" to deny people the right to marry. To bad the americans that didnt like you when your faith first showed up here didnt get you all.
That's crazy talk
The LDS church is a religous institution, not a business with shareholders. Like most non-profit religions, money goes to hunger relief in poor countries, not toward social networking sites.
Nate has made a valid observation, geneological research (finding out who your grandparents were and where they lived) is not something facebook would help out with.
Yeah I totally see why even
Yeah I totally see why even though the rumor has been retracted by the originating site, it is totally worth bringing up. It coincides so well with the religious zealotry of Mac fans that we can all get excited about a church that is known for the dedication of its members to their beliefs. Well spotted.
The interesting thing to know
The interesting thing to know is that the LDS church doesn't directly hold most of its assets. Though this is completely bogus, they do have quite a few profitable business concerns which they are heavily invested in, such as the Beneficial Life Corporation. These assets are held through the "Corporation of the First Presidency" and the "Corporation of the First Bishopric" which also hold sizeable chunks of real estate all over the world.
Though this is completely unlikely, if it were deemed to be a very profitable business engagement they would possibly consider it.
The modern world is corrupt
The modern world is corrupt and needs Jesus. Internet porn, child porn, murder, rape, robbery, etc.
Funny thing. I've met a lot
Funny thing. I've met a lot of people who are not religious and might be considered immoral people, and a lot of people who are followers of Jesus who are really good people.
But at the same time, I know a lot of non-religious people, including atheists, who are the model of goodness, and a lot of people who are followers of Jesus who I wouldn't dare to turn my back on.
I guess they don't cover "false dichotomies" in bible study.
Jesus Loves me?
Jesus told my pastor to show a picture of his naked body to my 17 year old sister.
Jesus told my pastor to rape a 14 year old.
Jesus told my wife that it was ok to leave me and marry someone else.
The world needs a stoning, not the "love" that you so desire.
Well someone who doesn't want
Well someone who doesn't want it needs to buy it, just so they can mess it up or shut it down (as if it's not messy anyway). I'm fed up trying to get people to visit the real world!
Anyone else remember when we didn't have the internet and had to go outside, using the gift of locomotion, to see other people?
Bah.
You are all sheep.
You are all sheep.
in the ancient time, there
in the ancient time, there was no porn just because they had no cameras...
Rapes and the such are infinitely less now than, say just 50 years ago...
Stop this thousands years long last day, please.
