Facebook v. Google: Social networking gets anti-social
Social networking is becoming a little less social as Google moves into the space, eager to create its own small kingdom in the newly-connected social web with its own social network, Google Buzz. This has caused current 100-pound gorilla, Facebook, to strike back with AIM integration (launched today) and whispers of a Gmail competitor to come...
As explained, Google Buzz creates an instant circle of social contacts based on who you communicated with using Gmail and Google's chat client. Once it’s set up (which Google will do on your Gmail page) you get to post status updates, images, videos and Twitter messages.
This all sounds familiar, but with 176 million active Gmail users and services such as Google Connect, it looks like the ‘don’t be evil’ firm’s serious about expanding into social-ism.
Facebook isn’t taking this without a fight. Today it confirmed our previous report (last year) and began expanding its own chat features by allowing these to integrate with other chat services, starting off with AOL’s Instant Messenger.
After downloading the beta software, AIM users can click a "Facebook Connect" button to set up Facebook chat. They'll then have access to their Facebook friends on their buddy list.
In a riposte to Google, Facebook is also reportedly assembling its own email service, allowing for POP and IMAP desktop Mail downloads, etc.

Why is the AIM logo running away from facebook? Hehe not the best start on a partnership? :P
ROFLMAO :D :D :D
Wow thats amazing seeing as I've been talking to my FB/Gmail/AIM friends for a long time on Adium. Guess i'll have to switch.
Google buzz might be a good idea if it was real there is no link on my gmail for google buzz
That colors of the Google logo reminds me of another nasty company
Facebook should concentrate on it's primary mission. People want to stay connected with each other in real time. Rather than rolling out new designs, they should take a step back and fix what they've screwed up. The customer communication is awful, too.
A 100 pound Gorilla is pretty light-weight. At least for a Gorilla.
What is this new AIM technology that allows this interaction? I see AIM becoming a major competitor to Facebook and their ilk.
I don't ever want to imagine the total lack of security and the frequent downtimes of a Facebook email account.
I don't think Google is becoming a threat for the current social networking system, it's an extra option for wide world users and it should be welcomed. One major advantage Facebook has over Google Buzz is that Facebook is notorious and has years of experience and improvements, it will take a while to Google Buzz to reach this position.
