Enderle says iPhone 3G a 'beta' product

Analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group is a frequent Apple critic, and his comments against the iPhone are perhaps good advice.

He's warning business users not to be too quick to adopt the iPhone 3G, warning that any flaws in the product may take time to surface.

Oh, but he's always good for a soundbite, check this from VNU:

"Apple is one of those companies that could sell refrigerators to Eskimos, but that does not suggest that Eskimos should actually buy them," he said. "The problem is that Apple tends to lead on hype and does a good job controlling initial product reviews."

Pretty true, but the business-friendly iPhone offers support for Exchange, Cisco VPN security and GPS - and word is many business users are tempted by the gadget.

Caution, advises Enderle, "It would be better for employees and their companies if purchases of the iPhone 3G were delayed until at least September," he warns.

Enderle is a Microsoft mouthpiece

2325

Of course he'll say this... His "employer" is being hit hard by the iPhone.

Tell the truth

2320

What he really should have said is: "It would be better for employees and their companies if purchases of the iPhone 3G were delayed until RIM gets a shot at the market with the wide release of their BOLD handset in September". I smell pay off and I am sick of the Apple hating.

Hype???? Really?

I just wish that analysts/editors would acknowledge that Apple has made a great product and that they are working hard to bridge the gap between consumer and business... Actually have made great strides to make the iPhone business friendly. It may not be for everyone, but it's a damn good product.

F to the J

I disagree. The first gen

2426

I disagree. The first gen iPhone was riddled with bugs until at least 1.1.4. And there's some that are still not fixed (maybe in 2.0 - haven't upgraded yet). The fact is that they do take time to surface and end up causing a lot of issues when they do. The iPod instabilities, Safari being unable to stably cope with tabs until about 1.1.3-1.1.4, random application crashing... It's all stuff that really hurts the user experience. Same deal with Leopard - some mission-critical things like 802.1X didn't work properly until 10.5.3. The iPhone at launch was not a perfect product. It was good, but had a lot of issues that took people time to notice. I suspect the 3G will be the same (especially since the worst features are still there - the crap camera, the ringer/silent switch that only allows for two profiles and tends to go off in your pocket at the movies). He's definately right about how Apple is able to ensure that intial product reviews are good. Most of the Mossberg/Pogue stuff completely missed the point. When you're talking about enterprises, you're talking about thousands of devices being carried around that have to work 100% of the time. If the iPhone 3G has the same initial problems as the iPhone, that's simply not acceptable for businesses who have been relying on RIM for years. EPIC FAIL TO THIS GUY

first of all WE ARE NOT ESKIMO. that is a racist term that is equal to saying the N word to african americans! this guys is an educated reporter???? its INUIT ya moron!

Funny.... this is exactly the

2522

Funny.... this is exactly the first thing that came to my mind too!

Good God! It's people like

1531

Good God! It's people like you that make this world even harder to live in with your ridiculous politically correctness! If you get your way you won't eventually be allowed to be called American because American is too specific and therefore considered racist.

Get a life! There's nothing wrong with Eskimo, it's not a racist term you American you!

As far as Rob Enderle is concerned, he's a MS loving, stupid, skinny white assed honky. You can feel free to pick me up on that term by the way.

Politically correct garbage

2624

Politically correct garbage like your diatribe don't belong in a tech blog, but since you brought it up...

Words are just that words; they can't hurt you unless you choose to let them do so.

Funny that the "n" word is considered so taboo, and yet I can find you a thousand links on the web of black people* using it all the time, in music videos, comedies, and even when just talking to each other.  I have a phone video I made at a restaurant of a black kid saying the "n" word over and over again.

Notice I don't use the term "African American", which you misspelled, because it's a jingoistic term that assumes all black people are of African descent and living (born?) in America.

If you want to excoriate Enderle, do so for his biased views on tech, stocks, and industry, NOT because you take offense because he doesn't know the politically correct phrase du jour to describe people of a specific ethnicity native to the frozen north.

I concur....!

2425

I concur....!

Umm...No, it's not a racist

2525

Umm...No, it's not a racist term at all...

Eskimo is a collective term, Inuit refers to a group of people under that umbrella...Look it up.

eskimo is not a collective

2821

eskimo is not a collective term, i don't know where you got that info. there is no one that calls themselves eskimos up here. AND for those that said that african americans call themselve the N word and therefore its ok for EVERYONE to use it, that is just crazy. i DARE you to call an african american that word. lets see how well she/he takes it.

Trust me, I am big enough to

2522

Trust me, I am big enough to take care of myself if I say anything to anyone's face; I'm not quaking at the thought of doing what you suggest.  Whether I was or wasn't it is irrelevant, that is not my point.

So, in your opinion, it's okay to be a hypocrite?  It's okay to fein great offense and anger at someone for using a word that you use yourself use in music, comedy and normal conversation with friends?  I don't buy it.  A word is either hateful and should be taboo for all to use, or it isn't.  A word belongs to all to use, or it belongs to no one to use.

I think some of you people out there are just so angry and involved in self-hatred for what you are, that you look for any excuse to get angry when someone says something *you* don't consider politically correct.

Get over yourself and the emotions you're wearing on your sleeves, life's too short to get upset over someone said Eskimo instead of Inuit.  I'm a "minority" in several ways, I don't get all bent out of shape when someone uses any particular term related to those minorities, you shouldn't either.

Critics Can Be Useful

2524

I don't agree with Rob Enderle's assessments of Apple, but it's good to see what your critics are saying and see if their criticisms actually have any weight. Feedback can actually be useful... sometimes.

When the critics are shown to be wrong, then people can rejoice.

Andy: You've been reporting on the Mac how long?

2324

Andy:

I can't believe that you neglected to mention a number of well-known facts about Rob Enderle:

-- The "Enderle Group" consists of Rob and his wife... period.
-- His qualifications and tracking record regarding reporting on anything Mac-related are well-known to be at best dubious.
-- His computer industry "insights" are at best woeful quality and relevance.
-- His financial connections to Apple's competitors are well-known and render his objectivity on these matters seriously open to question.

When you report on things like this you owe it to your readers to do a better job of presenting the whole picture.

Wait until September?

2326

Wait for what, exactly? A firmware update? More apps? It's not like they're going to release a new hardware version of the iPhone in 2 months. In the meantime, he's advising - essentially - IT departments to wait 2 months before they allow deployment into their businesses. WTF, of course IT isn't going to smile + nod and let everyone run wild with the device on their network! They're going to get one themselves, try it out, test the features, and then give people the green light.

Seriously, it's not like an IT department would allow their users to grab any ol' smart phone with VPN (and VNC capabilities with the right app) and have access to the corp. network *without* testing the device and creating a policy first anyway.

well, i'm starting to get a

3021

well, i'm starting to get a little nervous that the "beta" rap might have some validity.

I'm seeing LOTS of slowdowns, to the point of believing my phone's frozen at times. And maybe it has. After 10 seconds or so of non-response, i'll move on to another task or try a restart. This is entirely new behavior since I updated to software 2.0 and downloaded a half dozen apps.

I've also today had the autofind feature in SMS disappear. And so have two thirds of my contacts in address book. I have 527 on my computer; 522 show up in MobileMe. Only 196 are on my phone today, though they've been there until today. I've restarted, powered down-and-up, even reset the phone, and synced it several times. Nothing's solved the problem.

I'm on hold with tech support--my second call, the first led me to a rep i simply couldn't understand, try as i might, and from whom i was accidentally disconnected.

Maybe this is an isolated event. That certainly happens with any product. But i've seen lots of reports of the sluggishness/near-freezes on numerous forums. So I am starting to worry...

Rob Enderle is a tool for RIM

Rob Enderle is a tool for RIM and Microsoft.

Both of our iPhone 3G's work just fine.

The iphone 2.0 has some bugs

2424

The iphone 2.0 has some bugs (come on apple fix the few problems with applications) but still it shows how clueless he is about apple and eskimos by the way. (eskimos use refridgerators to keep their food from freezing.

How often can someone be wrong

2721

Enderle's track record of being right is pretty poor. He has missed the mark with so many wrong conclusions, that he really isn't taken seriously.
The only ones who seem to hang on his opinions and observations and treat them as gospel are those who desperately hate Apple, what it does, and how Steve Jobs has changed the world (multiple times).
This guy is wrong so often he is under consideration as the 'New' head of Microsoft. It's hard to believe, but he has actually been wrong more often than Steve Balmer, and that is truly remarkable.
But when you respond with the "Flame Mail", you give him what he wants; web-site visits. I promise you, if you ignore him, he will go away.
