Verizon Droids already dropping in price. Dell sells for $120
Update: Amazon has dropped Droid to $150 as well
You might be able to find a refurbished iPhone for $49 off...but only if if it is refurbished. Even chain discounter Walmart only takes $2 off the price of the iPhone and there are never sales. Apple simply doesn't discount it, ever (we'll see about Black Friday).
Verizon/Motorola have taken a different approach with their top handset. Merely a week after launch, the Droid has already lost $80 in value over at Dell who are selling it for $120 with plan. This follows news that the Palm Pre is selling for $79.99 at Amazon (Pixie is $24.99 - not even enough to qualify for free shipping - zoikes).
Why are Verizon and Motorola so quick to discount the Droid when apparently it has been flying off of shelves?

It wasn't "flying off the shelves." It sold approximately 100,000 units in the first weekend. That's only half of Verizon's estimated stock and a fraction of the iPhone's first weekend sales. It did well, but not great.
iPhone sold in 8 countries and on multiple carriers. Also many 1st gen owners upgraded.
Half of that million was on AT&T only.
Initial first weekend sales of the iphone were at 700,000 iphones and without no previous marketing, no previous APP store. Was sold only in USA at AT&T.
Android did had a very strong marketing and APP store with more that 6 months online.
You are correct, it is "unfair" to compare initial sales of the iPhone with the Droid. The Droid had much more advantage than the first iphone, but even that, it only sold 1/7 of the iPhone sales.
Please...the hype surrounding the first iPhone--beginning a FULL SIX MONTHS before its release was out of this world. It was practically billed the jesusPhone by the time it came out.
If you thought the Droid marketting was big, the 1st iPhone marketting blitz was 50 times bigger. Of course the first iPhone sold a lot, even with its hefty price.
"the 1st iPhone marketting blitz was 50 times bigger".
quite likely, yet for the most part it was free publicity. the enthusiasm just isn't the same for droid, sorry. no people lining up for days and no dancing out of the store with newly purchased droid in hand.
Come on, Iphone and Apple product haters... Why don't you just give up...
Why do you keep on comparing Iphone to all the new smartphones the comes up? I guess you just envy the success of the product.
So you find hope whenever there's new phone that may compete with the iphone. But every time that fails, you just make yourself a loser even more.
The truth really hurts... You cannot deny that Iphone is successful.
Just keep on hoping, I guess someday your wish may come true.
WOW droid does a price drop again? What could be more sweeter than that.. So wait around for 1 month and see droid drop's it price again.. maybe to 100 USD only? That will be insane
Motorola Droid at 120 USD: Best or Worst?
If it's not flying off the shelves and meeting/beating expectations then you will definitely see a reduction in price. It's all about the sales.
It's Motorola...what do u expect?
Why should you care? There's clearly some insecurity running around here lately.
Are you kidding? .... being insecure about any Apple success is a key component of card-carrying Apple fanboi-dom. ... and I should know, being one of them.
I'm an Apple fan as well, but this is really starting to get ridiculous.
Aren't people sick of PC vs. Mac already? Now, they want iPhone vs. everyone else? Ugh...
... but hype is NOT going away as long as you have these trolls called magazines and news media still operating (who the big firms like Apple, MS, Google, etc all clamoring to stuff with fluff PR pieces and unsubstantiated hits against their competitors).
Amazon just dropped it to $150.
And we were all pissed.
That was a few months after it was released... not 2 WEEKS.
The price of the Droid is immaterial. They make the money on the contract, with the added protection of high contract cancellation charges.
That being said, I really can't figure out how much a Verzion Droid plan costs. With 450 minutes and unlimited data, it seems to be $70 or $80 or $85 a month, depending on which data option I choose. And it isn't clear to me what the differences between the data plans are. I think I'd like "unlimited data", but that with a 450 minute plan seems to be $80 a month. What's up with that?
Isn't that about what 450 minutes plus unlimited iPhone data cost on AT&T?
I don't get it. Verizon is awful. Voice quality is terrible. Especially the phones that Verizon offer. The voice is tinny and TINNY.
AT&T is terrible. Always chopping up the voice packets.
T-Mobile actually works.
As fo why the price drop? It's chunky. There's no multi-touch - stupid CDMA version and GSM is just all around better. More convenience. Global phone.
I have both a Droid and iPhone. The main reason for using the Droid is integration to Gmail. I think the phone is great for those who are heavy Gmail users (as well as other Google services). For those who aren't tied into Google the lure of the Droid is far less.
The Droid is also a draw to the early adopter technical folks - most of who bought their devices shortly after the device went on sale.
I think we're seeing a similar pattern with other smartphones like Palm Pre that have had similar steep price drops -- especially through third party resellers like wirefly or lets talk who are exceptionally aggressive on pricing.
Bottom line - Droids very good but not about to dethrone iPhone for most.
Wrong! The Motorola Droid sold 250,000 in it's first week. The original estimates (100,000) were incorrect.
This is just stupid on Moto/Verizons part. It just tell people (who wants it) to wait longer because the price is falling rapidly.
Wait until the start of next year, and you probably can get it for half the price!!
Welcome to the world of Dell marketing!
Coming from an iPhone 6 months ago (loved it!) and switching to Verizon due to entire family plan switching, I can tell you I was waiting for ANY smartphone to come out. Having said that, I am extremely happy with the Droid. The voice commands are excellent and I can just speak to dial a number, search on a map or even get gps navigation or movie times. Everything is integrated into the voice commands. The screen is beautiful, while the lack of multi-touch is noticible when typing with the virtual keyboard. I guess I type too fast so without multi-touch the keys aren't pressed right...wasn't a problem on iPhone but droid forces me to slow down or use only one finger. Hopefully that will be corrected soon. Camera is nice, the zoom is freaking great. So far as apps are concerned, I haven't noticed a difference. It seems like everything I used on iPhone is available on Droid. Final thought...if iPhone was available on Verizon I would have opted for it, but since it wasn't I got the Droid...and I find that I like it much more than I expected to. Will I switch next year when Verizon gets the iPhone...not sure.
Oh and something iPhone will NEVER have, which I love: iMusic. Sort of like Limewire app for Droid. I can download music over 3G directly to my phone, for free. That alone f-ing rocks!
