Dell matches 27-inch iMac display size and pixels

Dell just announced its new WQHD monitor: the 27-inch UltraSharp U2711. With a native 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, the screen should compete with a 27-inch iMac, though you'll need a dual-link DVI adapter for this one and Apple's Display-Port to dual-link DVI adapter is very bad.

The screen goes on sale next month for a MSRP of $1049, but will generally go for less as all Dell screens do.

might as well buy the iMac if you're gonna shell out $1000 for this screen.

I got a 23-inch monitor from Dell on Black Friday, and although the 16:9 ratio took some getting used to, the size and quality of the panel is superb. My MBP handles it well. You guys sound like you're disapproving of it a bit, with that last line there. They do discount them, but not because of the quality.

You could always connect via MDP-HDMI cable I guess.

But how hard can it be for a new high resolution monitor to provide MDP input?

Why can't you just use a display port to display port adapter?

Since the screen has a DisplayPort (see Pics on engagdget), why do i need a dual-link DVI adapter ?

It should be possible to connect directly via DisplayPort, OK i need a cable from MiniDP to DP, but thats not a problem at all:  http://bit.ly/dfeKb

Where is that MacBook on the above picture standing on? A DIY docking station?

I must have missed it: what is the light source?

Only this is a monitor, the iMac is a frekkin compuuuuuuuuter.

I got excited until I found that Dell's monitor is not LED. That's unfortunate because I likely would have purchased one for my MBP.

This monitor does not require the mDP->dual-link DVI adapter. It has DisplayPort, so all you need is a $4 mDP->DP cable from Monoprice (or just an adapter if you have a regular DP cable). I have the Dell 3008WFP for use with my uMBP and that's the cable I use.

For the poster who suggested a mDP-HDMI adapter, that will limit resolution to 1920x1080, so there's not much point getting this monitor to do that.

I have been using the smaller brother U2410, and love it! true it is not an iMac or a computer, but this screen is more for graphic professionals and color reproduction fanatics, AdobeRGB,  and IT IS NOT GLOSSY!

AND a computer. You seem to have forgotten that.

Not needed as stated, but for anyone interested,  I received this email some weeks ago from Atlona regarding adapters etc.:

The current DP200 will display images/video on the iMac 27” up to 1920x1200 which will still fill up the screen but it will not be the highest resolution of the iMac.

If you want the 2560x1440, we are working on the box which will do dual link which should be ready in 6 weeks.

Thank you
