Defective campaigners target Apple Genius Bars worldwide
While we can see its a fairly imaginative way to deal with a campaign on digital freedoms, we do think the campaigners may risk raising the ire of many Apple users, particularly those with real technical problems with their Macs waiting behind campaigners in the queue. Anyway, the Defective by Design crew are campaigning against DRM. They also complain that Apple's insistence all iPhone software be vetted blocks free software development; they are concerned at its location-sensing technologies, which they believe, "provides ways for others to track you without your knowledge. They also want Apple to widen support for different audio formats in the device. To reinforce their point, they're asking supporters to book one or more slots at Genius Bars in order to moan about the iPhone and DRM. They've provided a 'Fact Sheet' as to what they feel is wrong or right in the iPhone (though, frankly, it's pretty focused on what they feel is wrong, so...) This comment was interesting: "Apple’s marketing machine is trying to justify DRM by treating you, the user, as a threat. They claim that one rogue application on your iPhone could possibly bring the phone network to its knees. " Instead, the campaigners note, "Most smartphones, including those by OpenMoko, Nokia, RIM, Palm and even Microsoft, allow applications to come from a variety of sources, including free software developers." Ho-hum, so I guess the news is, perhaps expect queues at the Genius Bar on Friday and Saturday, and Genius Bar staff will probably get a memo offering them a few stock answers to the questions the campaigners helpfully put together. Come on...
This reminds me of elementary school/k12- level behaviour:
if we don't get what we want, we will try to accomplish our goal anyway...
idiots...
The funny part is that most
The funny part is that most of the campaigners have never even own a Apple product. People love DRM and iTunes is proof of that, Not everyone enjoys buying a CD to have it barrow by their free loader friends, hey if i paid for it you should too, it's not like i don't like free stuff too you know
Campaign against something worth while.
Why don't they campaign against something worth while....I don't know Poverty perhaps. Yes DRM is annoying but its a tiny and unimportant problem which most people don't care or are even aware about.
HAHAHA : FreeRunner/OpenMoko Train Wreck
"iPhone is not the only option. There are better alternatives on the horizon that respect your freedom, don't spy on you, play free media formats, and let you use free software -- like the FreeRunner"
The OpenMoko is called a "Train Wreck"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ntUy2eqlk
The FreeRunner IS defective by design.
They are definitely targeting
They are definitely targeting the wrong company on this one. As explained by Steve Jobs in an open letter already some time ago, he would prefer offering DRM-free music but most music labels were not eager. ITunes Plus offers DRM-free music and this is growing. Furthermore, it is unlikely Apple will shut down its authorisation servers in the (near) future, unlike Yahoo! (or Microsoft, .....)
"concerned at its
"concerned at its location-sensing technologies"
why haven't they been concerned about all cell phones, which can be tracked via tower triangulation?
the FBI have already tapped cell phones to eavesdrop and record conversations and use them in court: http://news.cnet.com/2100-1029_3-6140191.html
although the gps data in the iphone is more accurate, most new phones will probably have gps and it won't contribute that greatly to this issue anyway.
stupid
there's nothing anyone in any apple store could do about DRM and Apple's method of distributing iPhone apps.
this is going to be such a waste of time and it will piss people off at the genius bar who've been waiting a few hours to see an MG for a real mac/ipod/iphone problem.
The GPS in the iPhone also
The GPS in the iPhone also appears to only be on when it has explicitly asked for your permission and can even be turned off completely.
Irony
Irony is iTunes offers DRM-free as an option, but the labels aren't supportive.
Minority Report
Yet another tyranny of the Minority...
They are targeting the wrong
They are targeting the wrong people. Apple has nothing to do with DRM. The Record companies that are the ones demanding that Apple enforce DRM. Since they own the music they make the call. Go demonstrate at the Record Companies.
Get used to it....
Almost everything I've read on this page is wrong. The reasons you list of Apple's behavior are at best cognitive dissonance and at worst, utter denial. The second to the last post talked about tyranny of the minority... can anyone actually say this when they use an Apple product?
This is simply another campaign against DRM and a lack of rights by consumers. It is a follow up to their bad Vista campaign. I would get ready for daily posts on Digg and Slashdot. This is likely only the beginning.
No open source software?
WordPress appears to be free and open source. It's available on iPhone.

Fight BACK
Customers, if you are in line for a Genius and some person starts talking DRM in front of you, just grab him/her by the back of the shirt, yell some obscenities at him/her, and bodily escort him/her from the store. Geniuses... call their visit over in 2 seconds after the DRM question is asked. EVERYONE: Ask the person why they don't just get a life.
Hmmm! Yes. Let's start a
Hmmm!
Yes.
Let's start a campaign to render anyone espousing the thoughts of
"Defective by Design"
Defective by "Process"!
Ouch!!!
Here is what the GB kids do
The moment somebody asks a DRM question, say "Next in line please" and have the prick escorted out of the store.

I feel like your cause is a waste of time. Why not protest against high oil prices, poverty in the world, global warming, food shortages and other MAJOR problems in the world. Apple allows for free software on the iphone at no cost to the developer. Don't you know that the FBI can track you via YOUR cell phone by triangulation, they can also turn your phone's microphone on to record whatever they want. Does anyone in this organization even own an iphone. Here are your five reasons back to you, 1 there is free software available for the iphone/touch (if it is not free the developer has to pay a small fee to have it on the apple server and bandwidth used for the software transfer.) 2 Apple does not endorse the use of DRM the record labels require them to use it. iTunes plus is DRM free and Apple is more supportive to that. 3 as for the tracking, one can turn off GPS but still if you are a person of interest to the FBI, I am sure they can still triangulate you on any phone. 4 Again, you must not own an iphone because one can play mp3, aac, wave and other formats on the phone. 5 is just dumb if you want to use a "stupid" phone go ahead. But please don't bother people who have need real mac/iphone/ipod help at the Genius Bar, they didn't do anything to deserve the longer wait and plus the employees at the Apple Store can resolve the false information you have. Try to put your hard efforts into "real" world issues. Because frankly pumping at the gas station sucks.
What a joke. If the
What a joke. If the mainstream news publishes the story, 99.9% of the public who even notice it will think "Apple. That reminds me: it's time I bought an iPhone 3G." Not "Yes, open source is a noble and grand thing."
I wonder how much Microsoft has paid the Ogg Vorbis crowd to hen-peck Apple like this...
I really don't get what is
I really don't get what is wrong with these people. If you don't like something, don't buy it. That's why people invented choices. Just cuz iTunes is the biggest music retailer doesn't mean you have to buy from them.
*sighs*... it's times like this that I wish I were a genius. I could have lots of fun with the protesters...
Me: Next.
Protester: I have a question about DRM...
Me: Next.
Protester: But I...
Me: I'm sorry, am I not speaking English? I believe I called for the next in line. Next.
I love how they complain that
I love how they complain that Apple vet all App Store software in one sentence, then complain that Apple controls the use of GPS and why should I trust Apple with that?
Why on EARTH should I trust some bedroom scriptkiddie not to secretly activate and use my GPS data more than Apple?!?!?!??
Seriously, I know that if Apple have approved an App, then chances are it's not going to do anything nasty to me - I suspect that if such an App were to be found, Americans would have them in court quicker than you can hit "delete". So I'm quite happy to only have "approved" stuff on my iPhone, and that's why I never intend to jailbreak it - I don't trust "free" software. If your stuff is that good, do it properly and get approved - heck, if it really is good, people will buy it and you'll even make some money!
Muppets. Really.
awesome
The scripts from apple are prescreened for everything man!
