Policing a big event? There’s a Mac for that...
Danish police have turned to Macs for use in managing this week’s Environmental Conference in Copenhagen.
This UN-backed event will see the world’s biggest political and business leaders and protestors from across the gamut of groups involved in the climate change debate descend on Copenhagen.
With so much action, no great surprise local police have put together a central command infrastructure that’s run entirely by Mac Pros and Mac Minis - there’s not a Windows box in sight.
That police prefer Macs isn’t new, at least, not locally. Danish cops have been using Macs since 1996 - well - not Macs precisely, they ran Steve Job’s NextStep OS. The decision to move to Mac followed extensive research into what other systems were available. It didn’t like what it found...
“We were looking at the leading [systems] on the European Market to see what they were able to do for us… we didn't like it and went back empty handed,” explained the Police Inspector who made the Mac decision in a chat with IT Pro.
So they created a system based on 25 Mac Pros and 73 Mac minis. And the system is more efficient than those used by other European police forces.
“Shifts of six to eight people using 14 workstations are all the city of 1.2 million needs to take 800 to 1,200 emergency policing calls,” the report explains.
Police forces in the UK typically field up to 50 people to manage central command for similar sized populations. And they use (erm) Windows systems, if the report is correct, which are slow to process data and require operators keep a paper and pen by their PC (so they can jot down notes while the computer shudders into action.).

Let's say that these police wanted to use iPod Touches or iPhones to do some of their work. They hire an outside developer to make them an application. Is the only way they can get it on their iPhones through the App Store or via jailbreaking? Does Apple offer anyway to install apps locally, perhaps as part of a business deployment of some sort?

Let's think about this. You want the slogan to be "Mac: The official computer of the police state"? I thought they had an ad once about breaking away from big brother.
Denmark? Do you have even the slightest clue about what a real police state is??? Hint: it doesn't mean a government that employs cops. Please don't use phrases like "Let's think" as a prelude to doing the exact opposite, okay?
Ooo, aren't you so coy. Imploring me not to use "let's think". Well let's do so. First, the reference was not specifically to Denmark. Secondly, there has been a shocking rise in technology being used to monitor normal citizens. Evidence of increasingly police presence in the lives of average citizens is everywhere, e.g. CCTV cameras in the UK, warrantless wiretapping in the US. I would think that a company like Apple wouldn't want to be associated with this. That was my point, but then again you missed it.
To call Denmark for a police state is nonsense
I was not referring to Denmark in particular. I was referring to the title of the post.
Do you actually know what police state is? Apparently not. Lets face the facts: when rest of the world speaks about stupid americans they actually don't mean americans in general; they mean people like you who tarnish the reputation of the whole nation. Please try to understand the following:
The term police state describes a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic and political life of the population. A police state typically exhibits elements of totalitarianism and social control, and there is usually little or no distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive.
I suppose that warrantless wiretapping, increased violation of Miranda rights, and the constant disruption of peaceful protests by the police (all in the US) doesn't count? Every major organization monitoring US and state government policing bodies noted a major rise in violations of civil rights in the 2000s. But I guess wikipedia is the ultimate answer for everything, not real data.
My point was that it probably isn't a good thing to link your technology company to police enforcement. But it appears many people here don't mind government snooping in their business.
"Sådan Danmark" / Way to go Denmark! - Who would have thought that Denmark would be mentioned on 9to5mac, i sure didn't, but what an awesome debut!
And no Denmark is differently not a police state :)
Peace from Hopenhagen!
I always knew the Danes were a cut above the rest. Hopenhagen is a very nice place w/lots of bicycles and attractive women.
Enjoy !
Surprised they are still trying to push the global warming scam now that the gig is up.
Al Gore are you visiting the site again and down ranking posts?
How can I have missed this great piece of news? At first I didn't believe this, so I started to search around to see that it's true. Then I found an article from september 29. which stated the same.

Looking at those pictures of racks of minis drove home that Apple new its market when it released the new optical-free minis. But it immediately made me think if there is a way to get them without SL server when you buy bulk? Anyone have experience?
