MacBook Pro Core i7 caught GeekBenching itself

If you were excited about the prospect of Core i5 MacBook Pros, which Intel briefly offered up in a contest last month, you are going to be pretty stoked about today's news from MacRumors.

Their forum members found a GeekBench scoring done yesterday by a Core-i7  M620 MacBook Pro which is running an unreleased version of Mac OS 10.6.2 (Build 10C3067) and Bios MBP61.88Z.004C.B00.1001251657.

Current generation MacBook Pros score in the 3700-4000 range on the GeekBench score meaning that this particular laptop is a screamer.

We're hoping we don't have to remind anyone here to hold off on buying a new MacBook Pro for the foreseeable future as it seems an update is imminent, with Macrumors even saying that International supplies of MacBook Pros have been dwindling.

We should note that it isn't impossible to fake the specs of a MacBook to Geekbench.

That's pretty close to my iMac 27'' Core i5's score of 6,600 or so. Pretty impressive.

5260 is close to 6600 ? Learn Maths noob

Reminding us not to buy because of imminent update? really? The ipad just got introduced and its close to 90 days away. How long do we really have to wait for the mac book update, its already late.....

Do you not understand the concept of "freezing a market"?

They introduced it early so people could save up to pay for it and to prevent people from buying the shitty nook and kindle. Now people are saying "I'll wait for the iPad." Apple can take their time with iPad because they're not freezing any of their OWN sales.

The MBP update will be an instant update ready to ship and I wouldn't be surprised if they just do it and not make any kind of announcement.

I am really hopeing for an update in tHe Macbook Air, even a price drop. It has so much potential.

Are you sure this isn't a hackint0sh?

Hackintoshes run not-yet-released builds of OS X?

hmmm.... a i7 with only 2 cores?

Followed this on MacRumor Forum (almost 350 comments).

Just hope that Apple and third party developers and providers will continue to support the DuoCore machines in future OS updates like up to OS XI or XII. With Snow Leopard we lost all those who have G4's. Would have been nice if there was an upgrade for them -- maybe not Snow Leopard but something. I think that Apple also just made those machines obsolete and will no longer be stocking parts.

"hmmm.... a i7 with only 2 cores?"
Answer to joered yes there is one i7 that has 2 cores, rest are quads.

Well, to be fair the Motorola (G3,G4) --> Intel transition was a complete migration from one processor vendor/architecture to another. I would agree that continued support of everything in the Intel family had better continue or there will be hell to pay. It might have been nice to support the G4s for a while longer but it's a cutoff that had to happen eventually. It's not like G4 machines were bricked or anything.

Can. Not. Wait. Been holding off on a new 15' for just this reason. Chatter away about the iPad, I'm waiting for the new MBPs. If true, very impressive

Same, I've been waiting and hoped the new MBPs would be at the keynote on the 27th.

same here, waiting for the update for the "15 inch" soo badly!! I keep looking at it at the Istore! cant wait!!

I hope Apple will give customers the option to either have the Core i7 620M or the Core i7 820QM. Does anyone know what the battery life is like with the MacBook Pro running a Core i7 620M?

I want it so bad. I've been waiting since Christmas now. Still using my old iBook G4. Virtually no battery left after 5 years...

Buy a new battery. They're way cheaper than a new computer. About $50 on Amazon.

And then someone will be willing to pay you a bit more for your used iBook.

Intel's nomenclature of their microprocessors, is very confusing at times. I just don't understand why they do not have a succinct numbering system, with associated Specs, that is easier for consumers to understand. If I were waiting for the next ultimate update, for the MacBook Pro line, just wait for the definite Quad core i7, that Jobs decides on utilizing. There is the Quad core i7 820QM, with 8MB of L3 cache, and still runs at a lower power(thinking 45watts), and a faster clockspeed, than the 720QM. The Clarksfield, 45nm, i7Quad Core, is already been out on the top Windows machines. Why settle for 2cores and 4threads, when you can have 4cores, and 8threads? No brainer, I would think. One other point, is whether Apple is going to release the 45nm i7Quad core on the MacBook Pro's,...or probably go "directly" to the new 32nm die, QuadCorei7 chips. I have not owned a MacBook Pro, but I might change, my allegiance from Microsoft, to Apple, when making my next laptop purchase. Another point to be communicated, for those who might be interested, is the new "vPro" Intel technology, which utilizes advanced hardware technologies, that allow desktops and laptops to be more "secured," on both Ethernet-wired, and wireless networks. Therefore, remote file acquisition, security, and disabling/deleting files, can be achieved. These "newest" chips with this vPro technology, will be run on the Intel Q57 Express chipset. The new i7 and i5 vPro chips will also take advantage of a new instruction set called Advanced Encryption Standard(AES), which enables faster data encryption, and decryption. It may be wise "to wait patiently," until these may become adopted on the future MacBook Pro's.

Why not go to 4 cores? Because Apple cares about making laptops that are actually mobile, and the 4-core desktop CPUs use up too much energy and create too much heat. Apple will not sacrifice battery life for performance.

...and why would I want some BOFH accessing my laptop through a backdoor without my permission and deleting my files??

The 32-bit Mac OS X is a dead give-away for a fake. There is positively no reason that one would use 32-bit and then GEEKBENCH it.

well, i did my system, just to see how it compared to the macs. my processor is an i7 920, 6 gb DDR3 1666 mhz memory. my computer scored a 8119. i love windows :)

What does Windows have to do with high Geekbench scores ?? You just have good hardware. Windows is rotting crap, nothing to be compared to OS X.

Yeah, I'd rather run OS X on a cracked, flickering, yellow-tinged, washed out color iMac than a PC any day. So there.

Come back when you know the difference between laptop and desktop.

@seriously the free version of geekbench can only run a 32bit benchmark.

Well, I've seen a Geekbench entry for a Mac Mini (pre-2009 version) with an i7 Quad Core, and another with a Xeon. So suddenly we have Mac Minis with LGA1366 sockets and Nehalem support. How come no one goes nuts over that? Must be some "new unreleased model"?

..proof?
