This is incorrect.
Steven Jobs said they expected to sell 10M in the 2008 calendar year. So these 5 million would not count toward that goal, but merely reflect that they are on track to meet or exceed their stated projection.
This number is based on what Steve Jobs said in the keynote address at MacWorld when the iPhone was announced, and was corroborated by Tim Cook in the 1Q06 conference call last year when Gene Munster asked for clarification on that figure.
At any rate, this suggests that 50% more iPhones will be sold by the end of next year than you imply in this article.
