iTunes 8.2, now with Blu-ray?

Yep, Apple fans, we now have a big old bag of hurt called Blu-ray in our iTunes.  iTunes 8.2 now comes with Gracenote support for BluRay according to the About screen.  Is this just a licensing update or does it mean there will be some sort of ripping support for video media in upcoming versions?

Compare with iTunes 8.1.1 screen below:

We caution you not to get too excited, DVD wasn't in the previous version either.  Perhaps we'll have an announcement at WWDC?

 Thanks Jim!

Oh-ho-hoh shit!

This is probably nothing more than GraceNote changing its Terms & Conditions slightly. At MOST...it's DVD playback through iTunes.

iTunes to rip DVD's into its library for you???

or...

Front Row to be done away with in Snow Leopard and iTunes to take over as more a complete media player!

I really hope we'll be able to rip DVDs and Blu-Ray like we can CDs. That would make my life complete. Really. No more HandBrake!

I would be thrilled if Apple now had Blu-Ray support, less for watching or ripping blu-ay discs (which would be nice, but not my focus) but for creating and burning Blu-rays.

I own a wedding video company, and I have been offering Blu-Ray discs as a final product to my client for two years. Unfortunately, we need to have a PC to create them because the support just isnt there for Apple. Its a shame and frankly, an embarrassment to be secretly using a cruddy PC for something our amazing Mac systems cannot due.

How are people assuming that this means anything related to ripping DVDs? let alone BLU-RAY?!

Apple isn't suddenly going to join the pirate world.

Technically, if you are taking YOUR videos and putting it on YOUR computer it isn't joining the pirate world. Or does iTunes put all of your albums up for free p2p downloading every time you rip one of your CDs into iTunes?

I took a look at the Gracenote page and this may just be Apple updating their license to include VideoID.

If Apple was going to introduce Blu Ray support I'm pretty sure we would have seen something at the OS level first. It really is a shame that Apple is dragging their feet on getting Blu Ray to the platform. I can understand why they would want to avoid Blu Ray for laptops (battery life) but there's really no reason that my $2400 Mac Pro can't playback Blu Ray movies and burn backups to discs. I know Apple talks about licensing fees but I think they could eat half of the licensing costs, pass half of them on and still have happy customers/profit margins.

I would love to see GraceNote (well, *anybody*, really) get into the business of providing aftermarket subtitles for DVD and Blu-Ray. Seems like iTunes would be a good launching point for this.

If you need help getting your UDID activated on a developers account i found the website that i linked to my name above actually found them in facebook, just click on my name to go there. They had me up and running in no time and i now have complete access to their Apple developers account with my own user ID and password. It was worth it, just my 2 cents for anyone who is in the same boat i was.

Watching Blu-ray movies on my mac would be nice. but I mainly want to burn Blu-ray discs. I have hundreds of HDV video tapes and I want to archive them on Blu-ray.

There has been "Blue Laser" button here

for about a year now,
so a word written somewhere doesn't have to mean that anything is happening any time soon...

my friend is a developer and sent me the itunes 8.2 file but when right when I'm about to open it read the details it says 8.1.1, I'm confused
