Ballmer takes another stupid swipe at the iPhone

Look, we know it is his job to downplay the iPhone, but his rationales keeps getting weaker and weaker.  Yesterday in an AP article, Steve Ballmer said:

"Let's face it, the Internet was designed for the PC. The Internet is not designed for the iPhone. That's why they've got 75,000 applications — they're all trying to make the Internet look decent on the iPhone."

Now let's take a look at a Morgan Stanley slide posted by Techcrunch on the relationship of mobile Internet adoption on iPhone+iPod as it relates to desktop Internet adoption.

You don't just get the name "Monkey Boy".  You have to earn it.

He's right. The internet is not designed for the iPhone, it's the iPhone that is designed for the internet.

Developers! Developers! Developers!

Rounding error!

Problem with that graph is it's meaningless as the number of people with internet access is vastly different at each point in time - you can't use absolute numbers. Percentage of possible users, maybe but how could you even begin to calculate that?

In 1998 when I first used WAP phones, hardly anyone even had mobiles.. is it so surprising that it took longer to take off?

I believe that all STATISTICs (including this) make no sense at all... Weather forecasts are getting more accurate predicting the weather than statistics/graphs

It's extremely stupid and short-sighted; if everyone thought like this, we'd still be sticking punchcards into room-sized mainframes.

That being said, it's also quite a reach to compare Internet Adoption in 2007 to internet adoption in 1994. It's a whole different world.

I mean, here are the people you're talking about:

(marginally unsafe for work, in an 8-bit kinda way.)

Mr. Balmer's comments are intended for the consumption of the inept investment community, the ineffective board of Microsoft and naive Microsoft stockholders.
Your reality is likely to vary.

And you don't just get the title "Crappy Tech Writer" either. You have to earn it.

Seems you earned the title "Crappy Thumbs-down Commenter." Congratulations.

You guys are way off. Microsoft is stepping up their game:

1. Windows 7 was released today - and it is INTERNET centric!
2. Google's new Music Store will support MP3s... on the ZUNE!
3. The Verizon Droid will be released before the end of the year... and it'll be bigger than the STORM!
4. Microsoft is RESTORING a subset of lost Sidekick User Data!

So there you have it, Mac fanboys: Apple is DEAD.

Win 7 may be net-centric, but that's M$ problem: Our net-use is no longer computer centric.

The Win PC has to do the boring stuff (Word, Excel) and some of the fun stuff (that iLife do very well, thank you).

But as for the net: Now we use gadgets for the Net (including, but not limited to, the Web). Enter Android & iPhone. Right?
Oh! And Microsoft, I have been told ...

Wow, you are a DOUCHE!

1. I can think of a FEW other OS's that are Internet centric. Microsoft are just really late to the party.

2. Google are NOT going to be selling many songs for the Zune. Again, Microsoft are too late to the party.

3. Droid won't be a problem for the iPhone especially when comparing it to the Storm because the Storm was a FLOP.

4. Sidekick has NOTHING to do with this article but thanks for pointing it out to us because now we can remember that Microsoft have made a huge rounding error and are frantically scrambling to fix something the didn't have backups for. Very clever.

Apple have just posted fabulous results which blow Microsoft out of the water. Apple is ALIVE and well.

I guess the internet wasn't designed for Windows Mobile either...

Given that Macs and iPhone run on OSX which is based on UNIX which is what the Internet was created with ....Ballmer you are the luckiest (for a moron) Billionare going!

RE Totally unfair

1. They fixed windows Vista
2. What is a Zune?
3. Verizon Droid...Microsoft...I dont see the connection
4. Trying to fix another big F-up

I believe the poster is being sarcastic. Here are the give aways: Saying the Droid is going to be bigger than the Storm... the Storm was a failure. He's implying the Droid will be a failure...

And that Microsoft is restoring a SUBSET of Sidekick users' data. Obviously, that's a fail.

We should be giving that comment a thumbs up.

Thanks. I wrote it; I thought it was obviously sarcastic.

Point 1: Win7 is Internet Centric. Duh, the internet has been popular for like 15+ years. Microsoft said Win98 was Internet centric.

Point 2: The fact that someone else is making an MP3 store is kind of uninteresting. People can already use Amazon, etc... with their Zune or iPod or whatever. And obviously, the Google store ain't a Microsoft venture.

Point 3: You got it. The Storm blows (had one, work-supplied. It sucked.) Droid may be good. Same thing was said for the Pre. And again, it isn't even an MS product.

Point 4: You got it. SideKick data loss was 100% Microsoft's failure. No excuses. They should have verified their backup strategy before futzing with the SAN. This was the hugest "sarcasm" give-away.

Anyhow, thanks for seeing the sarcasm. Now back to upgrading to Windows 7 from my downgraded Vista box.

... that the iPhone and iTunes were making Ballmer sweat, but that would be redundant. I don't think I have ever seen a sweat-free picture of the man.

I don't think I have ever seen a monkey sweat... until Monkey Boy showed up... now I have.

Well be glad you never had to work around him, just sayin

Good god is he that stupid.

I have dozens and dozens of apps on my Iphone and it has nothing to do with making the internet look better on an Iphone.... Lets not comment on using windows mobile !!!!

It is all about those Apps bringing the information I WANT and presenting it to me in a way I can easily use in daily life ....

It's not about customers having to use the internet in some pre fabricated manner .. it's about the information being presented to me in the way I want ... thats what the Iphone does.

It's iPod Touch not iTouch!

Actually, it's an iPod touch.

Ballmer just has iPenis envy.

Crap, I meant iPhone envy.
