(Axel Springer CEO, Dr. Mathias Döpfner Talks about moving the company to Macintosh)

Axel Springer (no relation to Axel Rose) is doing what no company of its size has ever done. It plans to move its 12,000 desktops to nearly 100% Mac.  Besides the GooglePlex which is a mix of Macs, Windows and Linux and Apple itself, Axel Springer will become the biggest Mac shop in the world.

This is excellent news for Apple for a number of reasons.  If successful, it will be the case study that IT managers can point to when trying to convince their companies to switch to Mac.  Until now the highest profile switcher has been Auto Warehouse Co. which is in the midst of a switch of 1000 desktops.  It will also force Apple's enterprise unit to put more might into its European operations.  My experience with Apple Enterprise in Europe has been very negative.  For instance, Spain (the whole country!!) had only one representative.  It will also put a lot more Mac literate users and administrators out in the world.

Most importantly, it will give the world a chance to see what the Macintosh platform can do in a very large organization.  If it works out as it should, it willgive Axel Springer a large advantage over its competitors in spam/virus/malware prevention costs, training costs, repair costs and even attracting top talent.  I have sent this news to all of my mixed environment clients who I think should go 100% Mac.

Maybe you should too?

Bet this will the first of

Bet this will the first of many large corporations which start making the switch to Apple Macintosh systems.

They switched from Mac to PC

3537

They switched from Mac to PC at the end of last century - will be interessting what wll be with Springer in ten years...

really that big a deal?

3539

i'm not very surprised. the big thing would be if accountant firms would start switching to macs.
as far as i know apple computers are not that rare here in europe in the creative sector (ad agencies, publishing houses, etc).

Not rare at all for creative sector

folks to use Mac, but the vast majority of the employees of these newpapers will not be "creatives".

I am positive the move will pay off in not time.

I am actually quite excited a company is willing to embrace change and revisit their own world, i know how difficult is to make a small company change their platform, let alone a huge one.

This highlights clearly this is an innovative company rather than a dinosaur and sure the benefits will be not only direct but indirect.

Kudos, will keep an eye on it.

axel springer is THE yellow

3836

axel springer is THE yellow press publisher in germany and their magazines have a pretty bad reputation. at least when it comes to the well-educated people here... i am not sure wether their step will be conducive to apple's reputation.

The r e a l l y well

3336

The r e a l l y well educated people buy macs anyway. ;-)
Further: 1.) In spite of or maybe since being the biggest yellow press publisher Axel Springer is a respected company in Germany. Being the publisher with the widest audience their switch will have an even bigger impact.

In the video I only

In the video I only understood the phrase: "What you see is what you get" lol

Springer sucks. Embracing

3641

Springer sucks. Embracing cheap hardware sucks. It is easy and cheap to make a deal on US hardware. It's just hardware. No word about software. Springer sucks. All in it for the money. Europe for sale

Why use PCs? Even Microsoft doesn't use them in their art office

4327

Makes sense...... I've used Macs for years and would never use a PC again. It's true that PCs are still a little cheaper, but apart from that, they have no advantages that I can see. Macs are more stable and easier to use. Most graphics software was created for Macs and was later adapted to PCs, and never runs as well on a PC cause it's native to a Mac.

And here's an open secret..... not much of a secret really anymore..... I once did some design work for Microsoft as a freelancer ... I thought I would be out of place, being a mac guy... I walked into their office and everyone there was using a Mac! The whole office was outfitted with Macs. They just laughed about it.

Commodity

It's a good choise, because desktop place should be commodity.
This you have today only with macos.
