UPDATED: AT&T officially (un)promises free WiFi accessSubmitted by Andy Space on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 12:05.
The company briefly last week switched on Wi-Fi access at its hotspots across the country, switching it off just a few days later. At the time, the company offered no information on its moves, but it then updated its page to promise: “Access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks all for use in the US.” That AT&T updated the information on the company’s iPhone pages (in the Plans section, and albeit briefly) strongly suggests access to the hotspots will once again be enabled at some future point - but AT&T's being pretty coy about it. UPDATE: Late afternoon (US time) AT&T once again removed all reference to the free hotspot plan from its site. Sorry for the confusion, but we're as confused as anyone else, given the company has refused to issue a clarification on the affair. UPDATE 2: Revised more of the copy to help prevent confusing readers choosing to skim the tale.

What about access without the iPhone
I wonder if they will be providing access for free for AT&T/iPhone customers that need to use their laptops. I know that they did so at Barnes and Noble if you had a qualifying login for other services (such as SBC, At&T Broadband, and the like).
It's easy
Have Safari spoof the iPhone and enter your phone number. Ta-da! Instant free surfing from the laptop!
Excessive verbosity
Does 'immediate future point' mean anything different from 'soon'?
I just read over that page
I just read over that page and don't see anything about that. Am I missing it or has it been changed?
you need...
to navigate to the 'plans' tab on that page, and seek for the statement in the small print.
It's gone again
Just checked the ATT website and the reference to wi-fi is GONE. I was also at my local starbucks and had no iPhone wi-fi page. Looks like somebody jumped the gun.
ATT should know not to jerk it's customers around like this.
And its gone
Yes, I'm aware of this now, overnight (my time) AT&T yanked all references to this from its site, and has refused to offer any clarification at this time.
Free Wireless to Please Owners of iPhone Gen 1
The free wireless is a good business move to please the owners of the first generation iPhone as an alternative to 3G speeds.
“Access to AT&T's more
“Access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks all for use in the US.” ?!?
Nowhere to be found anywhere on the mentioned AT&T pages.
Please provide a link where one can find this statement.
