Apple takes 10% share US PC market
Gartner's latest figures reveal Apple achieved a 10 per cent slice of the US in Q3 2008 - no wonder Microsoft's running scared.
Meanwhile, worldwide PC shipments reached 80.6 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 15 percent increase from the third quarter last year, the analysts said.
The news is that Apple's share of quarterly US PC shipments shot to 9.5 per cent, up from 7.7 per cent in Q3 '07. And US shipments increased 29.4 per cent, year-on-year - far, far, far - look really far ahead of total industry shipment growth of four-point-six percent (4.6%).
So, Apple's global computer shipments grew six times faster than the industry.
Remarkable.
(Incidentally, some may note that this period includes the release of Vista, which was, erm, meant to boost computer sales, which kind of proves Apple COO Tim Cook's point, we think).
The rest of the news is a little more lackluster - Apple hasn't yet jumped into the top five slot for worldwide PC shipments, lagging slightly behind Toshiba with its 4.6 per cent share.

Not too bad. 20 - 25 percent would be nice to top out on.
Too bad they don't have a slightly cheaper laptop. PC manufacturers have better deals.
I have a Dell for work that is a pretty good computer, similar to my MacBook. It's got a lot of features for the price.
Anyway, Apple takes it steady and easy. No reason why market share alone is a good goal. Margins are better. And Apple may not be in a position to cut prices as they would not be able to produce enough machines for demand.
I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually lower prices on their upper-price MacBooks once they catch up with demand and have the process nailed down airtight.

Apple doesn't care to play the Dell game whereby you use low ball pricing to attract your sales. If your buying an Apple computer your always getting the leading edge of technology not found anywhere at the time of your purchase. Your not calling India for support, you purchase a product that you are very very proud of owning, you get a very eloquent experience through the Leopard operating system, absolutely no security issues, there is a person you can speak to face to face for any of your issues or understanding of the software, you get a line up of complimentary Apple products to enhance your experience and you get the entire Apple ecosystem that is unmatched by any of its peers.
When you call for support you call to...States, Ireland, India, UK, Greece... and other places. Do not worry that you can always have Indian support.
Impressive.
Shame their lowest prices have gone up recently. I don't think that will help a lot.
Nevertheless, can't wait for MacWorld Expo.
Well, is it so hard to figure out? Why haven't they talk something about a deal in Canada!
