Apple testing 4G iPhone on Verizon, a blogger claims
Verizon may be aggressively targeting Apple’s iPhone with its latest Droid ad campaign, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t attempting to woo Cupertino, at least so it appears on report the next-gen iPhone is already being tested on Verizon’s network.
A report on Fone Frenzy (who?) claims Verizon Wireless CEO, Lowell McAdam has visited Apple HQ “several times”, adding that Apple is testing a CDMA iPhone on the Verizon 4G LTE network.
“The tests have been taking place for the last couple of months and but with no confirmation on the release date,” this report claims.
A report on the report published on MacTouchUser also makes the claim that Apple and Verizon are testing a tablet prototype on the network, citing an old BusinessWeek article.
Given continued complaints at AT&T’s US 3G coverage, some grist to this particular rumour is granted by the fact that Verizon has already begun putting together 4G infrastructure, set for mass market introduction next year. 4G is ten times faster than 3G, has better security and other features to attract.
All this must be put through the other recent claims that Apple and AT&T have hitched up an extension of their existing exclusivity, which could make for no deal detente between Apple and Verizon at this time. Also, we're by no means certain of the veracity of the Fone Frenzy claim.

Bad call on Verizon's part for introducing these new anti-apple ads - if indeed this story is true.
Why is that a bad move by Verizon? Think it is a very smart move. Verizon has 80 million wireless customers that will now not be purchasing an iPhone.
Analyst have stated they expect Android based phones to outsell the iPhone over the next several years.
Verizon just gave Google a chance to catch up. Apple should have moved more aggressively to move the iPhone to a wider carrier base.
Also, this blogger couldn't be more wrong about this being a Motorola ad and not a Verizon ad. The droiddoes.com website is hosted on the verizonwireless.com website.
No its not its perfect! Its called marketing

I don't think that Verizon's 4G LTE network will use CDMA. It will be the next generation GSM, like the rest of the world uses. Makes me think FF is full of it.
What exactly happens with 4G phones if they fall out of coverage of the 4G signal? They'd have to fall back on CDMA anyway, so a 4G CCMA story is saying they'll make a CDMA handset?
Too many antennae to make a dual CDMA, UTMS version?
The guy writing the article at Fone Frenzy IMO is full of it. He talks about a LTE CDMA phone. LTE is a packet switch technology and CDMA is circuit switch. Qualcomm owns the IP for CDMA so if you are using a CDMA/LTE then you need a chip from Qualcomm guess what they don't exist yet at least according to Gigaom

“We found a slide in their booth nailing down Qualcomm’s LTE roadmap. They will sample their first LTE chips in the middle of this year. This should make them ready to ship in commercial product by roughly the second half of next year. Their first two chips are the MDM 9200 and MDM 9600. The MDM moniker means they are suitable for data cards. The 9200 will have LTE and HSPA, the 9600 will be tri-mode with LTE, HSPA and EV-DO Rev. B. Qualcomm expects to sample its first chip for LTE handsets in the middle of next year.”
cdma? lte?
You should read up on lte before commenting lte is next gen gsm. True GSM networks are slow(384k). ATT uses UMTS for its fast data network, which is, Wideband CDMA. Try leaving a message to a land line from a verizon phone and an iphone on gsm (not umts mode) and you will hear the difference. GSM sounds crappy for a reason but I can't give it all away, look it up.
Wow this is getting more interesting CDMA is GSM but GSM is not UMTS...... and WTF.

GSM is GSM which is an old slow technology
UMTS is not GSM it is Wideband CDMA
gsm is more efficient because it uses less bandwidth per call which sacrafices call quality (cram more calls in the same pipe)
EVDO is slower than UMTS....in theory, not real world practice. Real world as of today, UMTS and EVDO are virtually the same speed, now when att goes to 7.2meg that will be the "local area connection" between the handset and the cellsite not the speed out to the world. You can speed up the radio link but if you don't increase the backhaul from the site to the switch its still the same throughput.
read a few white papers or hell, youtube, anything, but try to educate yourself before posting ignorant comments. (not an insult)
I don't pretend to be an engineer, but this makes sense. Apple launches a LTE iPhone with Verizon, allowing them to honor the AT&T deal on the existing iPhone platform (HSPA). This would be announced at CES 2011, and launched mid year 2011, after the AT&T exclusivity expires.
That's the Apple Tablet.
Here's how I understand it: Originally GSM is 2G, a TDMA technology. GSM adopted a different flavor of CDMA licensed from QualComm for its 3G called WCDMA or UMTS. To confuse things they call their 3G WCDMA part of the "Family of GSM", just as they are adopting ODFMA (called LTE) as their 4G. This doesn't mean LTE is from the GSM folks. Verizon decided to go with LTE for their 4G, but this doesn't mean they are switching to GSM. Their chips will be both CDMA & LTE for some time as LTE slowly builds out. GSM family and Verizon are just both adopting the same 4G tech. The reason QualComm is developing these multi-modal chips is because they are on top of these complex technologies and have the lion share of IP on all these 3G and 4G technologies.
this won't happen. whoever is pushing this is a shill for verizon which is getting killed by the iphone. they are doing everything they can to make people wait a deal with apple while they try to get something together that will be competitive.
its a ploy to gain time.
I agree that the iPhone is NOT coming to Verizon. That is why Verizon has begun to aggressively attack Apple and the iPhone.
Verizon tried and apparently failed to get an iPhone. Just look at Apples comments about how happy they are with the agreements they have in place with AT&T.
The best Verizon can hope for is to get this stupid Tablet/Media Pad.
As an advertising manager in the technology field, I can tell you there is one thing you don't do. You don't spend millions of dollars on slamming a company that you are working with behind closed doors. Verizon is spending millions of dollars on their Droid campaign - factor in media buys/TV commercials during NFL and MBL games and you quickly reach multi-millions of dollars. They are pitting Verizon against Apple because they know that Apple is the brand they need to beat...not AT&T...who's brand has already taken a beating. The Google/Verizon alliance and the fact that Verizon has stated "none of their phones will come with app portals other than Verizon App Store pre loaded on the phone" should put these ridiculous rumors to rest once and for all. Users can side load those other app stores - WinMo, Android, & eventually Palm - but most non-technical people will not or will not even have knowledge they exist. They will simply use Verizon App Store as their purchase point. Apple would never agree to take their App Store off the iPhone. The App Store is the reason the iPhone was made!! It is a delivery device for the App Store!

As many have said LTE does not utilize any form of CDMA, the story referenced is completely inaccurate. Might as well remove the post.
I don't get why any phone manufacturer would limit themselves like this Apple could have easily made 4 times as much as they did if they offered the phone to the other providers. I doubt the iPhone would be less popular if it were widely available like the iPod. Dumb Apple, dumb. I have Verizon, but if I wanted one of those types of phones I'd go for a Blackberry anyway. Personally, I hate Apple products.

For the last time.
LTE and CDMA are to totally different technologies. The problem is that Verizon can't possible roll LTE out their entire network in less that two maybe three years so any new phones that will run on LTE must also be able to run on CDMA. If this was not the case then you would have to carry two phones around all the time.
Neither Apple or Verizon is going to wait for two more years before the iPhone moves to the largest carrier in the US and the same thing goes for CMDA carriers in other countries. Apple can't wait because that gives Android too many years to pick up steam and take business away from Apple. All of this gives Apple no choice but to built a iPhone that can access both the CDMA and LTE networks.
Also, AT&T is going to have the same problem as they deploy LTE. Any new iPhone for the AT&T network will need to work on both LTE and the current network. Again Apple, AT&T and any GSM like carrier has no choice but to build a dual mode phone.
Anyone saying that Apple will NEVER build a CDMA phone or says that Verizon will never have the iPhone is either totally naive or is just fooling them selves. Verizon will have the iPhone, maybe not next June, although I think they will, but absolutely by June 2011.
Although Apple does not announce new products I think they should announce that they will be adding Verizon to their carrier list and when. That alone would stall a lot of people getting an Android phone. Then maybe the contract with AT&T cays they can't.
