The weekend Apple rumour machine has clipped across to the Apple TV, with venerable website TUAW reporting insider sources who claim existing versions of that product are set to be removed from sale by September 30.
The report adds "Additionally, the e-mail says that there will be a webcast "kick off" on September 30". A Tuesday. Is this an Apple-Tuesday?
Naturally, the report then speculates the move could see the introduction of a new model Apple TV, perhaps even a combined machine expressing elements of both the Mac mini and Apple's "in your den" 'hobby' product.
Is this related to the brick?
Updated to add: Some reports now indicate that the retailers are simply being asked to remove their point of sale display material for the product, suggesting the Apple TV will be unchanged, just in receipt of new advertising. Ah well..

Didnt apple say...
That they are going to release the push service on the iphone in this month so it could be that?
Heck
Yes! An Apple TV with DVR!!!
maybe.
Why do people want a DVR?
Why do people want a DVR? Cable is scrambled making it really pointless, at least in their primary market, the US.
minor problem
it's not much of an obstacle. they'd just need to add cable card compatibility. whether they would do that, no, i don't think so. they want you to buy everything on-demand from the itunes store.
Cable card is a broken
Cable card is a broken standard that barely works with the few providers that support it, if at all. It's a nice idea, but not likely.
Though it's possible there
Though it's possible there could be an update with the webcast schedule simultaneously, the email was just referring to the removal of the cardboard displays the AppleTVs were glued to. The devices themselves are staying where they are, the licenses for the photos in the displays are expiring.
Yeah I've heard that now
Yeah I've heard that now too. I'll update the tale.
Shame, though, as it would be good to see some movement in that product.
Apple TV + DVR + BluRay
Apple TV + DVR + BluRay Player all in one ? OMFG that would be cool.
That will NEVER happen. To
That will NEVER happen. To think otherwise is just ignorant.
Why? Throw an insult with no
Why?
Throw an insult with no supporting information.
Mini + HD recorder + BluRay + large 1TB drive would be AWESOME.
Prices have come down enough you should be able to do it for around $1000.
In the US, local channels are usually available without encryption on cable using QAM.
the supporting information
the supporting information has been staring you in the face for years. the only thing apple thinks is "AWESOME" is piles of money. they don't give a crap about you.
Apple will NEVER implement a
Apple will NEVER implement a DVR. They might implement a Blu-Ray, but that's even doubtful. Apple sells digital/downloadable media. You don't see them selling physical CDs or DVDs, do you? Why not? Because it competes with iTunes. Allowing content to simply be recorded as with a DVR also competes with iTunes. Apple won't build a competitor to themselves.
It might be "awesome" for you, but it would be stupid for Apple.
It is you sir who displays
It is you sir who displays ignorance, for not seeing through the light crust of sarcasm that encased my previous post. I know all to well that this will never happen, but I'm allowed to dream.
I admit, I did not see the
I admit, I did not see the sarcasm. It wasn't very evident by your post, as others seems to also agree with my interpretation. So I would think that's a problem with your wording rather than my understanding.
Just new software?
Apple has been awfully quiet on the Apple TV front. No Genius playlist update even. Either they really want this product to fail or they have been cooking something new. That something new doesn't have to be new hardware: I find it more probable there is a new software version coming with added features. What those will be is anyone's guess at this point.
Let me throw in some suggestions: Genius playlists, audio track selection for video files with multiple tracks and chapter selection. My dreams include access to email, RSS feeds and selected web sites (configured through iTunes).
Just new software 2?
My dream also includes availability of video content in EUROPE!!!
I hope it is going to be a new hardware device. My opinion is, as it happened with the iPhone, that Apple will release the software for existing AppleTVs but release a new model of AppleTV.
That is "the brick". The brick will allow:
- docking of an iPod iPhone for syncing
- wireless management on any Mac in the home (as if it was an iPod)
- Browsing on the couch
- video out 1080p and surround.
- 1TB memory to store all your multimedia (pictures and everything else)
You will then "sync" not only your iPod but also you mac to such a device...
never
these brick fantasies crack me up.
When you sync
WHen you sync, it also syncs your soul.
AppleHome =
AppleHome = TimeCapsule+AppleTV+iPhone Dock with backup
custom PASemi processors with 500GB or 1000GB HDD
Something is likely coming soon . . . .
Doesn't the email pulling the displays with no new displays to replace them suggest some sort of a change in coming for Apple TV?
i'd like
I want a mini (better specs) with dual HDMI outs so i can PIP my movies and use my 1080p tv as monitor. But also give it some in/out cabling so we can do a pass through.
Make what you will of this,
Make what you will of this, but Apple Australia have been out of stock of both units for a little while, and good stocks are arriving on the 2nd of October. New models? Maybe. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
any news?
You guys know about any news on this? I didn't see anything in this direction...
