Does Apple have a Steve Jobs succession plan?Thu, 06/19/2008 - 03:37 — Andy Space
Apple's co-founder is arguably the most innovative and succesful turnaround artist and tech visionary in Silicon Valley, and rumours of illness following his appearance at WWDC last week saw dollars knocked off of Apple's share price. With a recent report claiming Apple's iconic designer, Jonathan Ive, has purchased a mansion in the UK, and continued jitters at the health of the Apple CEO, company-watchers are beginning to ask if Apple has a succession strategy in place. The question is, if Jobs (or Ive, come to that) were to leave Apple, does the company already have the kind of visionary leader it requires to manage the consequences of the loss of their DNA? One obvious response would be to promote current Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, to the CEO's chair. Cook took the hot seat while Jobs was recovering from his life-saving cancer operation in 2004, but it's not clear if Cook combines the ingredients required to offer the company the kind of leadership Jobs provides. Speculation as to Apple's succession plans isn't new, of course - it is a regularly returned-to topic. And that we're engaging in a little of this now doesn't mean we think he's ill again - but the question remains valid all the same. What does Jobs think? Well, he appears pretty confident in his executive team, telling Fortune earlier this year: "We've got really capable people at Apple. I made Tim Cook COO and gave him the Mac division and he's done brilliantly... "I mean, some people say, 'Oh God, if Jobs got run over by a bus, Apple would be in trouble." And, you know, I think it wouldn't be a party but there are really capable people at Apple. And the board would have some good choices about who to pick as CEO. My job is to make the whole executive team good enough to be successors, so that's what I try to do." So who is on Apple's executive team right now? We've mentioned Jobs, Cook and Ive, but the there's nine more names to know:
We're not about to pick through the reputations of each of Apple's senior executive team, but we would like to note that the iPod itself was originally dreamed-up by Tony Fadell (though executed and improved upon with help from Jobs and Ive); and we note Scott Forstall as a man to watch, with arguably the most important role at Apple, caring for the development of a brand new computing platform. 9to5Mac Picks: Andy: Ive could be a spiritual leader, but I'm not sure he's the man for the CEO chair, he's inspired, and inspiring, but to be really honest, the one of the lot of them that has managed the most charismatic public speech in my experience is Ron Johnson. Whatever the outcome, Cook would take on a wider operational role, so it needs a visionary people feel respect and trust for. Cleve: Forstall is the man if SJ gets to pick. If something extraordinary happens, the board might go with a safer choice like Tim Cook. Ive doesn't want the job. Ron Johnson is my outside choice Quincy: Cook if SJ leaves in the next few Years. Forstall if SJ stays for at least another 3-4 Chauncey: Ron Johnson is the underdog. Ive, very little shot. Forstall is too techie. Tim Cook is the man to beat. Phil Schiller? Seth: For me it is a 3 horse race. Tim Cook is out in front but at steady pace. Phil Schiller is moving up.... but here comes Forstall! The only question is where is the finish line. Oh, Ron Johnson and Ive are watching from the stands. Who of the existing team do you think could lead Apple Inc.? Oh, and then there is Cramer..

Honestly, I think the title
Honestly, I think the title of the article is a dumb recurring question. Who the heck thinks Apple and Steve HAVEN'T honestly been thinking about this? Seriously.
What worries me more is...
Did the 3 leg stool (used by SJ at WWDC to illustrate the 3 divisions of Apple) indicated a company sell off. Why bother with hardware when they could be just like Microsoft? Even more worrying for me, would be if they decided to drop Final Cut Studio. Maybe Adobe will offer a cut price cross grade.
There is no chance
There is no chance whatsoever Apple will drop Final Cut. That's just a rumour floating around the video industry, many now think was originally planted by a competing firm.
If none of you are seriously
If none of you are seriously considering Tony Fadell that you don't know what's going on at the company. He RUNS the iPod AND iPhone divisions. And he has a lot of similarities to Steve with the way he operates. He isn't afraid to yell at his employees. And he is young enough that he could be CEO for a long time if successful. And he has been a CEO of a division of Phillips. Tim is a great COO and was the smart choice as an interim-ceo, but he is too hands on to be a fulltime CEO.
Ron has done a great job running Retail, but retail is in his blood, he has said so himself. They would be hard pressed to find someone to run Retail as well as he has if he became CEO.
Ive is very popular with Apple fans so I can understand why he does well in polls, but I don't think he would even be interested. He just loves to design beautiful products.
Forstall could be CEO way down the road, if we are talking close to 10 years. He just doesn't have that much executive experience at this point.
Steve is fine. He has loss a
Steve is fine. He has loss a little weight but that is normal considering the type of cancer he had and how they had it removed. He is in perfect health.

We know that - we said as
We know that - we said as much once the speculation began this week - we don't want Steve to leave, and we aren't saying he has too, or that he is ill, the question is who is he training up?
Just a thought
The reason I think this may be case, is that they don't appear to have shown much interest in any significant development for months. For example, no upgrade for Color, no bug fixes for Soundtrack Pro and no hint of Blu-Ray. Soundtrack is particularly bad and (for long projects) is all but unusable. Couple that with Adobe's recent decision to re-enter the Mac platform. They must know that any FCP user needing Blu-Ray must be seriously thinking of jumping ship.
I advise patience. They are
I advise patience. They are not losing interest in this sector, not by any means, they continue to invest - if you do have a problem drop them a line, as they are very much into collecting FCS feedback at the moment. I think there's something in the running fairly soon.
Meanwhile, this report may entertain
Final Cut Studio
Final Cut has been neglected recently but I imagine that's because they are about to drop a bomb in the next 12 months!! Final Cut Server was only just released and Phenomenon the successor to Shake has been cooking and is due somewhat soon so it would make sense for Apple to get their Video suite in good shape and deliver a competition killer in time for NAB 2009 ;o)
Here's what I would like to
Here's what I would like to see:
* New Final Cut Studio designed to make use of Snow Leopard
with Grand Central and Open CL
* Phenomenon - The Successor to Shake AND Motion
* DVD Studio Pro with full Blu-Ray Support inc Advanced Interactivity
* Compressor (Grand Central and Open CL should work nicely here)
* Color with Native OS X Interface
* Soundtrack Pro - Decent Upgrade using god knows what :o)
Scott Forstall reminds me of
Scott Forstall reminds me of Kramer from seinfeld.
Steve Jobs secret challenge
Do you know Steve Jobs has a secret challenge to name his successor?
Here it is: "My successor will be the one who turn the Apple TV into a smash hit".
Nice, isn't it?!
Ah don't underestimate Apple
Ah don't underestimate Apple TV. It's a crouching tiger, wait and see.
Like, since when did Apple ever rilly do "hobbies".
I am serious! The guy who
I am serious! The guy who succeed in making apple Tv a hit would deserve Jobs succession. It's tricky but challenging as Apple Tv will be the real "one to have it all" in a not so far future.
Easy. Give Apple TV DVR
Easy. Give Apple TV DVR capabilities. Can I be CEO now?

I think it's Scott Forstall that's been groomed for the position.
We'll see, but I agree that Steve is going to be around for a few more years.
