UK ads watchdog slams Apple over 'misleading' iPhone adWed, 08/27/2008 - 02:24 — Andy Space
The offending ad showed a finger touching the iPhone's weather icon, showing the forecast for Cape Town and then navigating through a Heathrow Airport area map, a Safari icon, hotels and stock market webpage. The iPhone rang and the hand was shown answering it. During the ad, the voice-over said " You never know which part of the internet youll need. The do you need sun cream part? The whats the quickest way to the airport part? The what about an ocean view room part? Or the can you really afford this part? Which is why all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone". The ad ended with on-screen text that stated "iPhone. Only on O2". But the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) declared the ad to be misleading, because two viewers "believed the claim that all parts of the internet were accessible was misleading because they understood that the iPhone did not support Flash or Java, both integral to many web pages." Apple argued that the aim of the ad was to highlight the benefit of the iPhone in being able to offer availability to all websites. Apple also argued that "Java and Flash were examples of proprietary software they (Apple) had chosen not to enable on the iPhone." The ASA considered that the claim made in the ad would lead some viewers to expect Flash and Java support, and declared the ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence) and 5.2.2 (Implications). It must not be broadcast again in the UK in its current form.

Two viewers?!?!?! These must
Two viewers?!?!?! These must be the same two viewers who think that a red headed clown, a thief in a striped outfit, and a fat purple guy are in the back of the restaurant cooking the hamburgers. I'm glad groups like the ASA exist to stand up and speak out for the stupid people. Never go full retard!
It's nice to see Apple get slammed for this
First of all to the guy above, it does not need that many complaints to get anything done about television or advertising in the UK, as it is assumed that others agree with them. Secondly it's nice to see Apple get slammed for this, they shouldn't be lying. Apple should really do some more QC on their UK ads, i.e. the voice over guy sucks.
It's a pity this has slipped through in the US though! Someone complain!
So you're saying that if 1
So you're saying that if 1 person complains they have to pull the ad? It's a wonder any advertising is permitted at all. You can't please everyone. And yet nobody complained about Benny Hill? Eh...British humor I guess.
That's the point though,
That's the point though, hardly anyone complains, and besides once they get the complaint they assess the situation, and see if the complaint is valid. They aren't going to condemn everything that some old lady didn't like, but they'll consider it.
2 people? Jeez. But in other
2 people? Jeez. But in other news, we know what to do to take down any false Android or WM ads now.
As a frequent web user, I can
As a frequent web user, I can happily announce to those in England that both Flash and Java add-ons... suck.
They kill performance and annoy the user. Supporting embedded Java or Flash on a small screen is unthinkable.
The lack of Flash and Java are a FEATURE. These technologies are mostly use to clutter web pages with advertisement. These scream "buy my fucking product".
Don't even begin to talk to me about accessibility capabilities for the impaired. That's why my (major) corporation doesn't use either of these technologies.
PS - I blocked all Flash on my desktop browser. Thank God for Camino and its Flash-block capabilities.
Misleading?
Isn't "misleading ad" an oxymoron?
Accessible
Apple's claim that all parts of the Internet are accessible is not misleading. The ad doesn't claim that all web sites, once accessed, are usable! The claim by the two and by the ASA are over the top.
If Flash and Java are both
If Flash and Java are both missing, it's sure not Internet capable for me! That seriously limits it's usefulness and is why I won't buy one.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that the ad is misleading in the strict sense of the term though. That's why we research products before we buy instead of simply running out and getting one because it looked cool on TV.
