Here's the post. It basically goes like this: Apple has said it is increasing its embedded device list this year. Ten-inch touch screens seem to be flying around Asia en route to Apple for late Summer.
If there is a tablet with higher resolution/independence, developers are going to need a few months to tweak their apps for launch. What if that $20 minimum Premium App Store happens to be for higher resolution apps?
Also, ARM's new line of Cotex A8 architecture processors are tablet-worthy.
Plus, I need something to look forward to...So here's why we might see a tablet intro tomorrow.
Speaking of which, we'll have the 9to5mac LivePanel open for the iPhone 3.0 Event. Stop by to see all information sources in one page.

not a bad guess. that
not a bad guess. that would be a nice surprise, and a change from the typical announcement where the scene has basically got all the leaked info ahead of time.
that being said, it seems unlikely. we do tend to get ahead of ourselves with our apple expectations.
Sure, but will a ARM Cotex
Sure, but will a ARM Cotex embedded processor help staunch the bleeding?
LOL, it's NOT happening!
LOL, it's NOT happening!
Doubt it...
Doubt it...
I don't think there is going
I don't think there is going to be a Mac Tablet, I just don't believe there is enough marked for the product.
I think they've created a
I think they've created a market...
I love my iPod Touch and use it for everything but an iPod. Aside from minor quibbles on the software side, the killer feature that would make me want to buy a new one, would be a bigger screen. Yeah, and USB ports and more customizability on the software side, but really, the screen is the thing
I used to doubt the mythical tablet market too, but I suddenly realized one morning that I am the tablet market... part of it at least
Not enough market huh, you
Not enough market huh, you should visit more forums, the buzz is huge. Just like all the past rumors...
"iPhone will never happen, it won't sell" Ooops.. now 3rd in global marketshaare with only ONE device.
"Macbook Air will fail, no one wants to buy that!" Ooops... Rev A had it's issues, Rev B is a complete rebuild, they must be selling a few or they enjoy wasting money on 2nd Gen MBA's
"No one will buy a UMBP with a SEALED battery or glossy screen (17" UMBP)!!! - So Apple has a 4 to 5 week shipping time on BTO because no one ie buying them? Local Apple stores have a waiting list for 17" UMBP's and won't sell their floor model's.
Clearly there is NO demand for Apple products, tell that to the people waiting 12+ hours to get a iPhone 3g or 2 weeks after it's release still waiting to get one.
I think I'm gonna trust Apple R&D and Marketing team to decide what the market wants. Thanks for playing though :)
I'd love it to be true, but I
I'd love it to be true, but I would be surprised. I think they'll keep it under wraps until its ready.
you know....a tablet would
you know....a tablet would better justify a premium app store. bigger apps for a bigger platform.
iPhone 3.0 does not imply a
iPhone 3.0 does not imply a Tablet annoucement.
Apple will release a tablet on the same day it is announced. No later. Apple rarely announces a product before it's done. The only exception was the iPhone, because Apple understood that they couldn't keep it quiet given that both the FCC and AT&T was completely in the mix.
The aspect ratio
but look at the graphic: its not iPhone sceen-shaped. Its a give away.
But seriously, if Apple needs to get developers to start developing for new aspect ratio, then they have to tip their hand early. Not my idea, I'm just quoting the MacBreak weekly guys from December cause I totally agree with Andy's roadmap
The Netbook market is going
The Netbook market is going through the roof and Apple has totally blown this opportunity.
In the meantime new Lenovo Pocket Yoga Netbook sure looks great.
http://i.gizmodo.com/5170542/shots-leak-of-lenovo-pocket-yoga-netbook-lo...
Now if I could just run Snow Leopard on it......
iPod BigTouch with WhisperNet
iPod BigTouch with WhisperNet app store and wi-fi app sharing (or donating a download license to friends).
Really?
How do you carry around that thing? I guess the glass screen is going to break in two days max. Or get badly scratched or whatever.
Besides - what bag, purse, backpack, suitcase that can fit 10" tablet cannot fit 13" MBA? So far, I cannot see the point.
Please Apple
I love my macbook and my iPhone!! This is a great mix. BYE BYE NETBOOKS!! APPLE DOES IT AGAIN, PLEASE!!!!
The MacTouch IS COMING SOON!
But it won't be announced tomorrow....sorry Seth. What might happen tomorrow is that we might see clues of it's existence when as the iphone 3.0 SDK is previewed.
Yeah...It problably won't be
Yeah...It problably won't be announced tomorrow...but I truly believe we will be seing some hints coming...seeing that the screens were already ordered!!!
You never know, though. Apple shocked us with the iPod Shuffle totally unexpectedly, so they might shock us tomorrow!
I'm prayin that's what's gonna happen....
i'm becoming convinced...
i used to think the whole tablet thing was pie-in-the-sky fanboy dreaming, but it's looking more and more likely. Here's why (in my opinion)..
1. Rumor of 10" touchscreens going to Apple factories
2. "Premium App Store" coming soon. Filemaker Pro Touch, anyone? Yes please.
3. Economy. I'd much rather spend $500 on an internet tablet like this concept, or even a Nokia, than on a little "netbook" with the same capabilities. I will not, however, ever, ever, ever spend $1800 on a MacBook Air. it's really thin, but still has a big footprint.
4. Safari 4. People have complained about moving the tabs to the title bar, but it's the perfect setup for smaller screens. You already have a title bar, so why not make it functional? This will allow another few dozen lines on a smaller screen for "in the browser" stuff, instead of wasting it on more menubar space.
And I believe it will be announced early. It may not be tomorow, but it will be in advance of release. Why?
1. Well, history has proven that people want Apps for these things. Developers need time to develop them. "Released in June with 2,000 available apps" sounds much better than "Available today with a clock and calendar. Some more fun stuff may come in the next few months"
2. It will have Wifi, as a given. But if it has a 3G radio in there, as a lot of these rumors say it will, it'll need FCC approval, and they'll announce it before its submitted to the FCC to avoid the all to often leak. (And, adding a 3G chip may allow Apple to break away from AT&T... Their contract is exclusive to iPhones, but not tablets...)
3. Again, the economy. "Coming in June" gives people a couple months to get $500-$600 together.
4. Publicity. "Available now" doesn't sell. "Available June 6" means lines outside the Apple stores all over the country starting June 3, with tons of free news coverage.
Oooh Dude, I could Not agree
Oooh Dude, I could Not agree anymore!
I believe you hit the nail on
I believe you hit the nail on the head with this... 100% agree.
TV would be good for premium apps
There is also some speculation that TV might be getting games and that would be cause for premium apps. cultofmac.com shows an Apple patent for TV that has apps and uses a controller similar to that on the Wii.
That would be more interesting to me than a tablet.
The netbook market is huge!
The netbook market is huge! And Apple has totally missed the boat on it. Just search for "Msi WIND hackintosh" or "Dell Mini 9 Hackintosh" and look at the huge market that Apple is losing to people putting OS X on a 10" laptop. Sorry, but the $1800 MacBook Air is not a subnotebook. And it's not a notebook to kick around either. Why spend $1800 on a MacBook Air when you can put OS X on a solid $300 Msi WIND instead? It's a no-brainier and Apple is losing money and customers hand over fist. But I'll be the first to tell you that I'd drop my WIND in a heartbeat if Apple came out with the real-deal. Get on it Apple, get on it!
how many people do you know that own a tablet right now?
exactly.
at most maybe 1.
i've been working in IT for 10 years and i never known anyone that has a tablet PC.
how will you type on a 10" screen? the iphone/ipod touch is the perfect size because you type on the virtual KB with your thumbs.
i can't imagine typying on a real size virtual kb. i would have to constantly look where my fingers are to type.
that being said, i can see apple making a netbook.
LOL
No way.
There's not nearly enough buzz for this product yet.
IF and WHEN they do so then they'll open development to just a select few developers, just as they originally did with 2.0
It's possible but I'd be surprised, it's been to quite.
Really this is the thing, for me anyways, if it comes tommorrow where are all the leaks? I just can't see Apple having a total news / rumor black out on a major product like this.
The other thing is if this guy has a ten inch screen I doubt that it will draw my interest. At least it won't like a smaller device with paper back book dimensions. The whole idea with tablets is portability and a ten inch device just doesn't ring my bells with respect to that parameter.
I'd rather that Apple strive for making everybody happy and just expand the Touch family significantly. That is give us a couple of models with one of them being a ten incher. Of course this won't make the Mac OS guys happy but that doesn't bother me as I don't see such a device ever being successful.
One thing is certain Apple is in a position here to fail miserably if they get this device wrong feature wise. I can't see a tablet being successful if it is focused on being an alternative to a notebook computer. If however it represents a device focused on the iPod Touch market, with enhanced capabilities, then I see huge potential.
The difference here, in my mind anyways, is that the device be focused on delivering content rather than the production of content. That is that it delivers eBooks, the net, movies and other media. Apps would be in the equation of course bUt they would derive from the iPhone and would take a simpler appraoch to functionality.
One thing that come to mind is that Apple has a third alternative here and that is to make the device part of the Apple TV family. Again it would have an iPhone derived OS but an arraingement of hardware that would provide TV functionality. It could represent a merging of the iPod and AppleTV lines and be the long rumored video iPod.
Dave
I agree with Dave. I just
I agree with Dave. I just want a 10" iPod touch with Wifi. I'm more about consuming content (games, music, internet, movies, apps) than I am about creating content (slideshows, movies, etc). Basic email would be nice, but if I'm in heavy email mode, I'm headed to my iMac or MacBook.
Ohh, I love this thing already! j/k
If it's a full fledged system
If it's a full fledged system with a Finder and the ability to install BBEdit and Photoshop, I'm in. If it's just an iPod Touch with a larger screen, I'm out. I already own an iPod touch and it's great for games, web and email... but I can't do any REAL work on it. However, a cheap $500 netbook that can do basic stuff while I wait for an oil change... that is what I need!
Its obvious that there are two different markets here.
I think it is important that people realize there are two distinct markets here. That is a device for the consumption of media and the desire for a device that can produce significant work.
A tablet can be a very good consumption device, in my opinion it would be a difficult production device though. The problem is the lack of keyboard that is distinct from the screen. That and the devices orientation isn't ideal either.
For people that want to do significant work on a small device i still believe the calm shell notebook has more to offer. However this is not what I'm looking for at all.
Thus I see this need for a larger iPod or the so called Newton 2. That is a larger media deliver device that can run apps similar to todays iPhone. It is not a device for the maintenance of a million lines of code, video production or editing. or any of the other traditional desktop computer chores.
++++++++++\
As a side note if Apple gets this device right I see a rapid transition to the format. If people haven't noticed traditional publishing has died. Especially newspapers but we are also seeing a gradual drop in content in published magazines. Devices that deliver such material will be the common way of accessing what has traditionally been a paper based industry. The key being a solid web browser and PDF handling capabilities and the ability to access and download material in back ground.
Ideally your local newspaper would arrive every morning without you asking for it. The user gets the ability to either cache the paper locally or file it permanently. Same thing for magazines though I don't see the need to arrive via back ground as being as critical.

Somewhere, an enraged Steve
Somewhere, an enraged Steve Jobs is being restrained by nurses as he struggles and screams "I TOLD THEM NOT TO RELEASE A #%@$ TABLET!!!"
the oppositte dude...
Its more like...
"Nurse!!" "Tell Cook he had better release the tablet on time or heads will roll......starting with his!!!"
GRRRRRRRR
