Apple Store walkout planned

ifoAppleStore is reporting that employees of a Seattle area Apple Store are planning a 1PM walkout on October 3rd.  Alderwood Mall retail employees cite “abusive” management and possible state and federal labor law violations at the store.  Their complaints have have gone unheard (until now, most probably) by Apple's upper management.

According to insiders, the employees’ complaints haven’t been fully investigated by the company’s human resources department. After reaching an impasse with Sr. VP Retail Ron Johnson over the issue, a group of Specialists, Geniuses and Creatives say they will walk out to bring attention to their complaints, and that several former employees will join the protest.

We saw this and the first thing we thought of was: Seattle?  What other company in Seattle is hiring Apple Store employees?  But this is likely just a few bad Apples managers ruining the party.  We'd be surprised if the whole situation is wiped away before October hits.

Oh please.. grow up

hahha i agree... nothing funnier than a bunch of losers thinking they are tough by walking out

I second that emotion

i've had conversations with apple store employees where they say the same things.

if they're following the proper channels set by Apple, sending issues up the chain of command and aren't getting issues resolved, this is the next logical step. make yourself heard.

it's kinda what this country was founded on.

If one or two employees have a problem, it could be a personality clash. When you have a complete (NON-UNION) staff walking out, it might be that the boss is a turkey. Just a thought.

Having worked in a union broadcasting shop and a non-union broadcasting shop I can tell you there is NO DIFFERENCE between UNION and NON-UNION - the Unions only stick-up for members when it suites the Union - period. That is no longer relevant - like it or not. I DO AGREE WITH THE EMPLOYEES! Walk-out and protest as that is what this Country was founded on! Good for them and I applaud all involved in the protest! Here is hoping they do not get fired over this - or make things even worse!

Fire the manager and get a good one. That'll get 'em Seattlers' in line. ;)

Send him over to the wannabe Apple-like M$ brick-and-mortar stores.

Rise Noble Proletariat, Rise and Be Counted!

I'm a former genius and apple employee, and I love the stores, that being said I hope they do it. This is the Apple way, when traditional channels of communication don't work, you "think differently".

i work for apple and it's fucking disgusting. i have a list of 50 reasons why it's so shit

Yo mamma needs to wash yo mouth out!

Why not mention them, link to them or post them? It makes you seem petty and childish to talk like a trucker and back-up your statement not once.

Quite easy to release you of your incredible cruel burden to work for Apple. Give me your job. I would like to work for Apple. Win-Win situation. Deal?

Man, these guys don't get it!

The unemployment rate nationwide is almost 10%. If you don't want the job the way it is, stand aside, there are many others that would love to have it.

I hope that if they do walk out that Apple just replaces the bunch of them.

If store management is breaking the law or otherwise abusing employees, then they absolutely have the right to complain.

And if the manager of the unit is a loser, lying to employees and making life miserable, then they also have the right to complain.

But if it's just people who are tired of being treated like employees, and the manager is adequate, well, then they're just being whiners.

It would be inappropriate for HR or senior management to publicly reprimand a manager. So it is impossible for store employees to say that no action has been taken due to employee complaints.

I have worked as a genius and it has gotten worse year after year, the work environment and the pay. I got out last year and it has gotten worse yet. The managers treat all employees as children. The Watch the cameras all the time to catch minor issues and fire people for attendance while not even tracking it for others.

The Apple store used to be a fun place to work a showplace for Apple but now it's just a retail store. Customers are even getting sick of the stores some people who used to love to come in now don't want to go there and would rather just give Best Buy their money, because it's the same to them. Both crap retail.

There are still a few good Genius and Trainer staff but they are even pushing them out with retail noobs with a 2 day course in the store. It'll get much worse before it gets better.

I would love to see this move nation wide, all staff walk out on October 3rd. Though with the economy Apple has the employees by the balls.

I feel the same way, As an employee, APPLE almost does nothing for you.

HR doesn't care

its not what it seems

its all pretty on the outside, but once you are in its totally different.

I would totally do a walk out, but I know the people at my store are to chicken to do anything but act like robots and hate their jobs.

I worked at an Apple Store. I sold 6 million dollars worth of product and got paid 11 dollars an hour. The conditions were herendous. One bathroom for 100 employees, and one drinking fountain. I walked in on people taking a crap all the time. When i would get a drink of water, my manager would ask me what i was doing, and to get back on the floor. The management was abusive, the conditions were poor. We had to clock in on one computer, and sometimes there would be a line to clock in, of like eleven employees and you would be late, and they would write you up for it. Worst place i have ever worked and i have had some bad jobs. Apple you need to take better care of your employees, treat them like people not like computerized robots. one crapper for over a 100 employees, disgusting.

Protip just for you :
To avoid the line-up of people and be on time, just come 5-10 minutes earlier. Quite normal for most employees. (Personaly I come up to 30 minutes early before work starts to prepare myself).

Just let them leave, who cares? There are hundreds of other people that will gladly work there. Even if they stay, then you have the bad attitudes to contend with, I say let 'em go

For the people that buried me for saying "Oh please.. grow up"

These people should be grateful to have a job right now.

You deserve it.

You're posting anonymously (like me i might add), and berating people for brining up issues you are not trying to even address in your post. You are superfcial and judgemental.

When you post something more detailed on which I can hang my hat, suck it up, and use a variation on your them, be grateful you can post anonymously.

Regards,

Apple fan. And ex-retail manager.

we are all thankful for having a job. but for a company to gross $3.3 billion in the first quarter and we at the retail stores see nothing. We make almost no money for the sales we are doing. I did $15,000 in 20 mins with the first gen iphones.
what did i see? $10.00 for that hour.

this company and the "culture" is a fucking lie and joke. everyone i ask at work said they would leave Apple if Microsoft offered more money, and what are we hearing about Microsoft today? THEY ARE GOING TO APPLE EMPLOYEES AND OFFERING THEM MORE MONEY. Because they know we will leave.

So i guess you can keep saying we need to get over it and thankful for having a job, but APPLE needs to get their shit together.

Unlike what you believe : you are just an employee. You don't own these iPhones. You have that job BECAUSE you sold iphones for 15k. While it would be nice of Apple to let employee participate in the success of the company (via bonuses), there is right for such thing.

You should get your work attitude straight.

(No, I'm not working for Apple. But I would love to)

Yo mamma ought to wash your mouth out too, Can't some folks expand their vocabulary?

Its a retail job in a mall. I wouldn't expect to be treated like a king, or paid a high salary. People at Ikea sell millions of dollars worth of shit also, but don't get paid any more than an apple store employee. On the other hand, its obvious that Apple is a business just like any other. Their products pretty much sell themselves. They're not going to treat their retail employees well if they don't force them to.

It's irrelevant how many iPhones you sold in an hour - hot products virtually sell themselves, and your skills are worth very little. Anyone can sell iPHones, hence you are not paid well. That's the free market.

Apple put up the capital for R&D, production, marketing, distribution, the retail shops etc etc... thats why they take the lions share of the profit. Why do you deserve to get paid like a lawyer/doctor/other highly trained professional, when you don't have those skills?

Wake up and smell the coffee buddy...
