1.1.4 iPhone Firmware out, Jailbreak-able - but wait 2-3 days (Updated)

Apple last night released the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware. Early reports say that it is Jailbreakable via Zibri's method but both Zibri and iJailbreak are telling people to hold off for a few days until they work out any bugs.

Us? Updated to 1.1.4 and trying out the different jailbreaks. Zibri's 2.4 works fine as far as we can tell. We did get a weird error (pictured) but the iPhone works fine, upgrades, Installer.app, phone etc, all working...more to come...as we play with it. We're looking at the updated files of course.

UPDATE: Zibri 2.5 is out and supports iPhone 1.1.4 officially.

Also iNdependence 1.4Beta is out - which also supports 1.1.4

I Jailbroke last night with ZiPhone on my 1.1.3 iPod Touch (with Jan Update) and got the same error message, everything is working perfectly though apart from the flashlight app whichs crashes as soon as its opened - not handy.

Other than that all is fine, just wait and see if all id good on 1.4!

jailbreak is not the same as unlock. jailbreak means to enable everything except calls. unlock, well, means enabling call from every other SIMs.

It looks pretty clear to me that Apple isn't trying to actively surpress jailbreaking. After all, they could have at least killed off current jail breaking tools.

Although it'd be just temporary, after a while users get tired of having to "re"-jailbreak month after month. So it is somewhat interesting that they aren't bothering (at least for now).

All that being said, the next version of hardware could make it a big more difficult to jailbreak... as hardware solutions are a bit more difficult for end-users to overcome.

In other words, if Apple wanted to stop this activity, they certainly could. There are many hardware lock stragegies out there that are very difficult to defeat. The fact is, Apple chose not to implement them.

For the touchs the ziphone jailbreak seems to only work for 8gb touch, so when I tried to jailbreak my 16gb touch(and anyone else who tried) , I got the BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0 error, so unless you have a 8gb touch I wouldnt recommend jailbreaking with 1.1.4

I upgraded andjailbroke my ipod Touch 8 GB from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4. All of a sudden the Mail, Maps, Weather, stocks, and springboard apps are not working. I jaibroke using the Ziphone 2.5 application. I remember these features was enabled on 1.1.3 using Ziphone 2.4.

1.1.4 firmware appears to work but in may case it eventually gets into tight loop. It boots but it immediately displays the "Edit home screen" pop-up and once dismissed, it reboots. To the point where the first time it happened I could not even get the iPhone back into dfu mode. It took three days of trying to get it back. Originally I attributed the problem to an interaction with summerboard but this did not turn out to be the case, as the second time it happened I had not installed summerboard. I personally am going back to 1.1.3 since I want to use some of the apps.
Just be ware that the loop can happen and do not panic if it does, you can recover.

My 1.1.4 touch is in the 'Edit Home Screen' loop.

I think it occurs if you install apps which would cause an icon overflow (too many icons to fit on one Home screen)

how did you get your iPhone into DFU or break the loop?

I do have SSH access to it at the moment and have tried removing apps but despite icons dissapearing from the Home screen the touch is still in the loop.

OK so I worked out how to fix my touch.

Holding the sleep and home buttons just caused the apple logo power on screen to come on a go off a few times. Powering the touch off and on again didn't work either, still looped the edit home screen message.
Eventually I found a post of an iPhone that said they got to DFU by docking the phone while holding the Home button. Well, the touch equivalent was connecting the USB cable while holding the home button - keeping it pressed until the DFU screen appeared.

Having read a couple of other forums this could either be down to me changing the root & mobile user passwords, or that I over-filled the initial Home screen. I'm going to try changing the passwords without filling the home screen to see if I can find out which. I'll post again when I know.

It looks like the problems using passwd to change root and mobile password are not fixed in 1.1.4. I've changed the passwords and rebooted, and I am back in the edit home screen loop.

I think this may have affected installer too.

I hope these posts save anyone else from ending up in this loop.

Just used passwd and it triggered this almost instantly. I changed the password the first time I used Jailbreak and it did it then too.

Not quite sure what's going on, but it does seem to be passwd at fault.

Not sure I want to be on a WiFi connection with everyone knowing the alpine root password though...

I have successfully changed the root & mobile passwords on my 1.1.4 touch without getting into the 'Edit Home Screen' loop.

Just went through the tight-loop problem with an upgraded 1.4 iphone on which I had just changed the root password... got back into DFU mode OK by holding down power and home in the dock until the screen went black (plus a few seconds), releasing the power button but keeping the home button down until iTunes saw the phone in recovery mode...

Lesson: don't change the root password using 'passwd' for now.

Hey guys,

I had the same problem. After using the default "passwd" program in iPhone to change the default "alpine" password, my Springboard crashes continously.

It goes back to Home and the "Edit Home Screen" just pop up for a while, and then the sunflower loader pops up as if it was trying to load something.

This vicious cycle keeps on to continue until you have no other choices to restore it back.

After reading this post, I had restored it back, and jailbreak and unlock, and after that I follow the instructions on http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080224231344798 and it worked !!!

But the question will be, if I have just replace the /etc/master.passwd file with the correct new password generated by the openssl command, would it work without restoring the default firmware?

I had the same problem with my 1.1.4 after changing the root password. I tried to restore the phone following Rezuan's advice and the phone cannot even start now. Please help! I have it docked, holding onto the home button but no response at all. OMG! This is freaking me out!

The password is still alpine, but you need to get in over (wireless) ssh. The VT100 application needs to be set +s before you can log in as root on it.

I've found found this fix iPhones already stuck in the home screen loop.

If you copy the contents of master.passwd and passwd on that page onto your phone via SSH (which still works if you have access via WiFi) it'll get your iPhone working again without the need to restore the phone again. Just tried it on my phone and it worked!

That page suggests using a text editor, but I found it easier to run the commands:
cat > /etc/master.passwd
Then paste the file and press Control-D, then the same again for /etc/passwd
