It looks all but certain that Apple will announce its first European iPhone carrier next week. And some bad news for y'all across the pond (or Channel as it were), it is not going to be carried by Vodafone who is currently launching an iTunes competitor (and whose CTO recently publicly dissed the iPhone). It will most likely be carried by O2 only.
It remains to be seen what effect, if any, the recent iPhone hacking will have on the selection of iPhone carriers. Apple will probably have to secure its iPhone OS from these hacks if it expects to keep exclusivity contracts with the vendors going.
Apple will save its Continental Europe announcement for Apple Expo in Paris where it will announce deals with Orange and Tmobile.
Apple is expected to announce 3G iPhones with 16Gb of storage at some point but next week's announcement might be too soon for those features. Perhaps Apple will only announce it's partner next week and save the specs for Apple Expo?

Vodafone is by far the most advanced carrier, and this ITMS competition thing from them is so fucking retarded... some corporate manager will probably get his/her carreer flushed in the bog over this and in the mean time Vodafone users wil have to go through the hacking techniques... anyway in the EU market phone network locks are not allowed to go beyond given timeframe ... in one or two years th iPhone ought to be available to all... hopefully

For all it's shortcomings, at least I own what I buy at iTunes. I can decide tomorrow to never give them another cent, and I still own my music... which is the way it should be.
Hedge for EDGE
I have a suspicion that the Euro iPhone will be EDGE too. Apple know that a non 3G model won't be as tasty over here but is it really the killer feature the iPhone couldn't sell without?
The American price drop has stoked speculation that a new spec will come out before Christmas but I don't think so. I think Apple may well treat us lot in Europe the same as they always do.
It's still the best phone anywhere for any money. How about it?

Lookin 4ward to the uk announcment, been dyin to get my hands on an iPhone since they were anounced, but I live about a 3 hour round drive from the apple shop in southampton, poo.
I reckon it will have 3G, apple should pull it out the bag, and I like laughing at americans when we have better gear!!

If Apple really wants to sell lots of iPhones, they will have to give 3G to it. In Germany nobody I know would spend lots of money for such a slow phone. For example: UMTS is nice (about 380 kb/s) ... but most new ("high level") UMTS-Phones offer HSDPA, what is about up to 3200 kb/s! I will never buy an iPhone without UMTS. See: It is hard enough that you cant use it at your macbook as a "modem", and if the fakes here are true (- i dont hope so -) there will be no "Speech-Flatrate" in your own t-mobile-net. To make a long story short: Much to slow, much to expansive (not the phone - the monthly costs).... And now please excuse my bad english ;-)
Vodafone has the best
Vodafone has the best coverage in the UK, the best network (3G) but not always the best prices (their PAYG has the worst pricing). O2 is second, Orange 3rd & T-mobile is plain rubbish. It would have been a lot worse if Orange or T-mobile had gotten the contract in the UK. O2 spent stacks in getting a 3G license but don't have a 3G network!
In the end its all horses for courses & it will come down to this (so network really doesn't matter):
1. If you can buy the iphone from Apple direct, unlock it & use it on any network without signing up/activating with O2 like people are doing in the US with AT&T, then it will be a winner.
2. The price is definitely £269 (£249 using the £20 voucher floating around the net).
3. Only a fool would buy an Apple 1st generation product.
4. 3G next year + 16GB + improved specs/apps
