Apple's cash stocks approaching Microsoft'sSubmitted by Chauncey Dupree on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 16:38.
What is all of Apple's money for? According to some analysts, it might be for a rainy day - perhaps the tech industry will hit a dry spell? Maybe Apple will hit an innovation wall? More likely however, Apple wants to give itself the ability to make a megabuy - like the Microsoft-Yahoo deal. (But one that makes more sense hopefully) The trends have implications for both companies. Cash translates into the ability to consider acquisitions and other potentially business-boosting deals. Apple has cited those types of possibilities when Wall Street analysts have asked about plans for its cash. Microsoft had been planning to borrow money for the first time, before it withdrew its $44.6 billion Yahoo bid Saturday. We've discussed these possibilities before. Apple likely doesn't know which mega-buy/merger it will undertake at the moment. However, if one becomes available that makes sense, Apple should have the capability to make the move. Changes in the industry over the next few years however, might make a deal like this very important to Apple's future. For now, Apple's cash stock pile keeps growing and growing...

SUN!
If I *had* to spend the money, I'd buy SUN. Instant corporate legitimacy for apple servers/workstations. The strategy would be to make everything that runs on solaris run on OS X (binary compatibility first, a'la classic mode and rosetta, then move it all native), and make Solaris run on SPARC. That would allow Apple to migrate data centers/workstations from Solaris to OS X server over the next 3-5 years.
While that's going on, make OS X and java happy together again (the current state of affairs with JDK6 is very sad), and leverage the SUN data center presence to create a truly enterprise class Apple branded/designed storage solution (x-serve raid with ZFS ftw) that competes head to head with EMC, 3par, and IBM.
Then again, I don't *have* to spend 19B right now...
Solaris on SPARC
Last time I checked, Solaris ran fine on SPARC...

MICROSOFT
Then he'll break it up, sell off most of the pieces, and Windows 10 will be the OS X for PCs.
No way
Apple will never be able to buy Microsoft even if they had a the money in the world! Why? Because I doubt Microsoft will want to be bought by Apple, and the Fed will say that's not possible because it would be a monopoly! Just think of it: Apple-Soft & Ubuntu/Linux! And even though there are tons of computer hardware makers, there are only 2 companies that will make the software that allows the computer to be used!
Steve just likes rolling
Steve just likes rolling around in a bed full of cash like the Danny Devito character in Taxi! C:

seriously besides buying up companies like recently PA Semi, I've read that Apple uses it's cash horde to get better deals and lock up limited stocks from suppliers. Apparently it gives them a big advantage.

Why does Apple have to buy anything? What if they're planning on simply taking everything; the MB, MBA, MBP, iMac, MP and MM, and doing a total and complete design revision next year? Like über revision. Designs that we couldn't even begin to speculate upon.
Damnit! I can dream, can't I?
MAC AND MY CAR
yes... Nintendo would be right on... and Adobe makes ALOT of sense. but one thing i would like to see from apple is a Microsoft "Sync" like product for cars. Apple and BMW already have a great relationship and i LOVE my BMW and i LOVE my multiple mac products (and my entire digital environment)... what if apple decided to streamline the user experience in a car with everything thats DOESN't have to do with the cars performance/handling etc... it should take over everything electronic and "entertaining" ... who wouldn't want to see all your favorite sports cars with an optional "Apple enhanced" dash board. imagine sitting down and putting your iphone somewhere useful instead of your center counsel of shitty Ipod connector. Think heads up displays on your windshield... think first class communication/GPS and music management. im drooling thinking about it.
Money Money Everywhere, but all I needs a Horse!
Jokes aside, that money has potential, considering the mere millions they paid for PA Semi. If I was at the battle room at Apple, I'd be considering a chunk of RIMM or CISCO, probably the latter.
invest in online services
how bout we "buy" a two-year .mac subscription for every customer who buys a new iphone, touch, or mac. This would not only propel explosive growth in Apple's own on-line presence (which MSFT seems to think is worth $46 billion), but also sell more gizmos at huge profits. I'd have to buy at least 1 every 2 years! They should also spend money to fortify the service itself so that all the phones can access all the info we've moved from the desktop into .mac. etc etc
online services continued
It seems the next battleground is web apps: Google vs the world. Apple needs to make .mac the hub for integration of your desktop, laptop, and mobile data. They're already on the way to doing this. If they fail, the OS won't matter anymore. Instead, it'll all be about standard web browsing appliances accessing Google's services. I think MSFT sees it happening and that's the real reason they want Yahoo.
One oft-sited strength of ipod is the hardware/software/online integration via itunes store. This is exactly what Apple needs to shoot for in hardware/OS/.mac integration. This is how the platform will differentiate itself in the future. This integration will allow Apple to beat Google (which it ultimately will have to do). But, .mac will have to be free, just like Google is free and itunes store is "free" until you make a purchase. That's the investment.
SONY ???
SONY ???
acquiring expanded hardware manufacturing
Dell,
I'm Telling ya , they're gonna buy Dell and have it as a tier two hardware maunfacturer for OSX boxes . Just wait and see,
Apple are planning to sidestep the "Cloud" Cloud Computing is a bubble 2.0 thing for sure . We'll get some great added functionality to our desktops and mobile computing platforms but realistically the model for centralising computing in the Data centre is a non runner.
That's my two cents anyhooo
Buy em all !!! I think
Buy em all !!!
I think Adobe & Sony are the best ideas. Once Sony is an Apple organization, Steve can sell the film side stuff to Disney/Pixar. Then he can use that cash to go after larger targets (M$oft etc) since their stock price will be much lower than now.
Ballmer, the man with no hat & no cattle (itz a Texas joke.)
Buy IBM or Pepsi!
Buy IBM or Pepsi!
I like Nintendo too,if Apple
I like Nintendo too,if Apple wants to get into the gaming aspect of things, although, what does Apple have to offer Nintendo? Nintendo has it goin. However, both companies live by the same philosophy so it would be a good match.
Adobe would be good too, for they can write apps for Apple OS Leopard til the cows come home, which they need more of.
I think the best choice
I think the best choice would be to buy a website, such as AOL, or even snag Yahoo before Microsoft bounces back! This would make their .Mac service much more common. Then they should buy like Sony or Adobe to help with their computing and possibly the Apple TV. Or they could buy a phone manufacturer, like Samsung, because Samsung has innovative products, to help add popular features to the iPhone like mobiTV and mobiRadio.
