A new app just hit the App Store that brings some pretty interesting funtionality to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. Airphones (iTunes link) takes any sound that would be coming out of your computer and streams it to your iPhone or iPod touch and let's you hear the sound through the built in speakers or headset. That is as long as you are on the same wifi network.
Easy and simple, right? It seems to get good ratings from overall happy customers. We like. Anyone want to report back on how well it works?
From the developer:
AirPhones is the next-generation solution to wireless headphones. Now use your iPhone or iPod Touch to listen to any audio from your computer via Wi-Fi. Experience DVD's, desktop TV, web videos & radio, audio books, shared iTunes playlists and podcasts; from across the room, throughout the office or around the house.

Because if you're watching a movie, it's hard to keep the audio and video in sync. This basically makes your iPhone/iPod Touch into a wireless headset (w.r.t the device playing the content).

Hm... I wonder if I might be able to use this with my PS3 and 52" TV? Because it's a real hassle to run a cable all the way over to the couch from there just to use headphones....

If you plug the audio from your entertainment system into your computer you could easily do it, but that seems like a pain too.

Any idea how well this works with an existing Airport Express setup?
I'd like to use this with my current Airport Express units but I wonder if the sound will be in sync. If so, this would allow me to put my Touch into my Bose speaker unit and use that as another location in addition to the other rooms with the Express units.
what i'd really like is to
what i'd really like is to combine this and the apple "remote" app, so that i can browse my computer's itunes library (like the remote app) and actually listen to it on my iphone (like this app). i'd also like to be able to stream music stored on my iphone to an airport express just like i can from my computer. for an apple device with integrated wifi i am pretty surprised the iphone doesn't come packed with this functionality.
exactly the same functions
exactly the same functions that I am wating for.
By the way the sound of Airphone has poor-quality, seams like 92kbyte rate, due to the performance of the streaming server. i use the b&w zeppelin which i can really recommend to all iphone users!
Cool
I've had this idea for a while and I've been waiting for this for a long time. I like to watch Hulu at night from my iMac but don't want to keep my roommate up. This is perfect for me. Hope it works well.
SimplifyMedia
Yo 9to5Mac Noob: What you are looking for already exists. Check out SimplifyMedia in the App Store.
Simplify media only streams
Simplify media only streams the libraries you've set up to use with it. This apparently lets you stream all possible audio you can get out of your computer.
On the other hand, I see no use of this with the exception of perhaps watching tv with headphones without having to deal with a long cable over your floor. But for that to work, it needs to be fairly in sync.

I play bagpipes, and I occasionally listen to a few audio streams online. Thing is, I can't listen to them on my iphone, one's through realplayer, and the other's a flash video I think...
Now I can listen to them, around the house without needing to have speakers cranked
So can anybody confirm
So can anybody confirm whether audio stays in sync while watching video? If you can, what sort of wifi setup do you have?
I can confirm that Video DOES
I can confirm that Video DOES NOT play in sync...if they can fix this it will be a fantastic app.
Audio is a half second or so
Audio is a half second or so out of sync with video. It's tolerable but slightly annoying.
HALF A SECOND?
Are you kidding me, half a second? The delay is not higher than 200ms, more like 75ms...
Does only mono
Just transmits the Mac's left channel to both channels of the iPhone
I knew it'd be like that.
I knew it'd be like that. Audio in mono sucks too. I was told I'd be able to use airtunes with an airport express to do wireless audio for video so I bought one and it doesn't work at all. Massive delays. It's all ok for audio only but there doesn't seem like much point in doing that, to me.
