ZuneHD Specs?
BGR is reporting some interesting ZuneHD specs, some of which look pretty solid. Notably, it would be the first mainstream device with NVIDIA's Tegra ARM chips that are supposed to blaze. Also, a large, touch OLED screen would be a first in a mainstream electronics device as well. We'll have to wait until August to see if Apple will match these so far imaginary specs.
- ~3.6-inch OLED full toudchscreen [iPod=3.5 inch]
- NVIDIA Tegra powered [Damn!]
- 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions
- HDMI Connection to stream straight to your TV
- HD Radio
- Web browser
- Wi-Fi compatible, with wireless marketplace[O RLY?! is this thing going to run WINMOB?]
- Released, early fall
- International release of the Zune device itself
- Home AV packs, Car packs, Charge packs
Also, wtf is HD radio?

Oled displays are not new to mp3 players. Most of samsung mp3 players feature oled displays and some companies like Cowon have moved on to Amoled. These specs are nothing to write home about, their are plenty of other players that match them currently.
HD radio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_Radio
Funny that HD radio was mentioned. David Pogue just did a really good write up/video on it. Take a look:

Yawn...who in the Eco wants to use IE tosurf the web? The Tegra chip is nice though. Apple cmon, put some power in the new chip!
Let the fun begin... if these specs are true, this could be a serious device... Finally. This should serve to keep Apple from being complacent.
You'd need a beefy CPU just to run Internet Explorer.
Also, wireless marketplace? What, is it gonna run WinCE?
Who develops for Zune?
Apple AppStore = 25,000 apps
Zune Marketplace = 25 apps (including Notepad?)
Meh.
true, do you like fish sticks??
Im a freakin genious!
Why does everyone keep on calling me a gay fish!
uh, to be a genius, i think you need to be able to spell it?
its from southpark....
Like someone else said, if these specs are true, it will force Apple to keep on innovating which will make my purchase of the iPod Touch 3rd Generation that much more enjoyable :)
3rd gen touch is done and in fabrication now most likely. we have to hope that apple was anticipating this and upped the specs as much as they could to compete with what was coming. let's hope they knew the next zune was going to make this leap in capabilities, and didn't just make some minor bumps and counted on their market share advantage to keep them ahead.
Anyone know? If they pull something cool, then we could have a game changer- like a 720 by 1280 screen or something
In late June Apple will update the iPhone, they've already updated the shuffle (which is great FYI), and then by next September they'll update the iPod Touch to probably higher capacity, possibly a camera, better battery life, and some other feature I can hardly imagine. Then about a few weeks later MS will release some "Zune Touch" thing that is totally ugly, over featured, over marketed, and in general it will be a total piece of crap and the only person you'll see using it will be some jock at the gym who is busy jamming to the latest Metallica album while pumping iron because that's the only thing in life he's good at. In the mean time, AAPL shares will continue to rise as the economy gets better, they'll slowly acquire 10% marketshare, MS will crap their pants and go over all of their calculations that predicted that this product would be the first "cool" product of theirs that everyone was supposed to adore, and hopefully Steve Ballmer will continue running MS because it ensures Apple's continued growth. I'll reference this post next September of 2009.
You, my friend, are a total douche. You started out with some very good points "they'll update the iPod Touch to probably higher capacity" and "Then about a few weeks later MS will release some "Zune Touch" thing that is totally ugly, over featured, over marketed," then you went into "total piece of crap"
Now I dont know about you, but I've used a Zune before. And let me tell you, that is a nice music player. Sure, maybe "there [ISN'T] an app for that" and MS will probably fuck up the advertisement and make it annoying or whatever, and yeah it wont be as pretty as the iPod Touch. But it is by no means a total piece of crap. I am an iPhone owner, as well as a proud MacBook Pro user so i consider myself a apple fan with badge and all, but I might consider getting this Zune as a bonus music player, maybe for the car, or for working out, what have you.
Though, that's just wanting MS to fail a bit too much. But hey, whatever. This is an Apple site. We hate MS, amirite? "haha Vista sucks!" its all in good fun
No where you sealed your douchiness is with "the only person you'll see using it will be some jock at the gym who is busy jamming to the latest Metallica album while pumping iron because that's the only thing in life he's good at"
I mean...really? Making up random token example people? And making them jocks who listen to metal at that? Low man...that's low.
Actually, I've found that a majority of "cool" dudes (i.e. douchebags) buy and use iPods because THEY are "cool" which makes them just a little bit "cool"er. So don't go there. Now, if you said like "the only person youll see using this is the hacker-1337-loser who goes around toting his uber skills and bulding his own rigs and thinking that makes him superior" then maybe youd have it just a LITTLE bit right, even tho still judgemental.
Do us all a favor, as well as yourself. Don't look like an ass.
I'm just saying that his is how it's going to happen. The only time in my life that I've ever seen someone listen to a Zune was at the gym and he had a big brown one hanging from his arm and he looked like an idiot. Then in the lobby he was on his phone having some conversation and sounded like an idiot. I don't know how he even got into college.
I've also used a Zune before, and it was terrible.
If you want something for listening to music in the car or at the gym I don't think the Zune will fit your needs. Maybe try a Nano or iPod Touch.
That's nice of you to take my reputation into consideration, but I'm in the business of being an ass to people, but only by being honest.
Some of the patents requested by Apple highlight interesting future development for the iPod Touch / iPhone platform. What I miss here is something really outstanding or new.
From a HW point of view the device is sure interesting, but design is nothing original (I've seen it somewhere....). And, from a software and usability perspective, there is really nothing special, just chasing the leader in the market. Sure, the Zune might be interesting in terms of price/performance, but I think that, when it will become available, Apple will have released something that makes the device look "dull" in terms of software.
Microsoft should learn to "tease" and not spill all the beans so soon before release. This takes away anticipation, "wow" effect and makes them look like if they are chasing instead of competing.
Regardless of the features, one should always keep something up the sleeve for release. This is really the basics of consumer marketing, something Microsoft is not good at.
Now we now everything from the Zune, and yet we cannot buy one. We are, instead looking for the new Cupertino device, for which we only know some details and rumors.
Rumors can make people wait for a new device...
That is just my opinion
stop updating this goddamn shitty post, it keeps popping up in my feed reader and i'm fucking tired of seeing this AIDS ridden device that thankfully does not exist yet.

Wow man, you're a tit!
you're doing a great disservice to tits by saying that.
What kind of monster uses "tit" as an insult?!!!
The physical specs might be awesome but the software will suck elephant shit! I mean seriously windows mobile is nothing compared to iphone os 3.0.
Meh, whatever it is will be a step below the iPod touch. Even if its 10x better than what it actually will be, it still won't touch the touch.
HDMI out? LOL
How many 16gb+ HD files are you gonna store on your 4 or 8 gig Zune? lol
HDMI output? How thick is this device going to be?
Truth be told, I would go for this. Hate to say, but cost is a factor for a large number of people.
Now I'm sure that they're not going to use the Windows Mobile OS, but hey who knows. Specs vs the current Ipod Touch seems pretty close, except for that nVidia thing.
To the base of the situation. I'm looking for something that will play music and my choices are zune or ipod. Now I know it may be redundant to post all this here but, like a duck, if it plays music, looks like a music player and sounds like a music player, then it's a music player. To me, that's regardless of who makes it. Again for me, price plays a big part, and if you're deciding which music player to get based on who makes it (specs seems pretty close, I enjoy using both ipod and zune interfaces), then maybe someone else should be choosing a music player for you...
What makes you think this thing will be cheap? I seriously doubt it looking at those specs.
I understand that Apple has some pretty specific patents concerning grestures and other touch moves and patterns on a device such as this.
How this thing functions in the hands of users may be quite different as a result, and I would suspect far clunkier and counterintuitive.
Any one out there wonkier than I, who might be able to say more about this?
Too little too late....
This isn't going to create a huge stir in the world of tech, that much is obvious. So yes, these specs are impressive. But they obviously do not have the software to make it slick and just work, without decent software the hardware is doomed. If Microsoft intends to release it about... now... there is too much of a chance of Apple once again stealing their thunder and releasing the new iPhone/iPhones.
But the biggest problem with the Zune is that not nearly as many people know about it. Especially outside of the US since the Zune has not been released in many other countries at all (eg. here in Australia). Compare this to the iPod/iPhone where ever you are. I'm sure that someone walking around with the signature white earphones is immediatly going to be recognised and noticed for having an iPod or an iPhone in their pocket.
But someone carrying around a brown colored chunky media player? Nobody gives a damn.

Come on – this HAS to be Mac compatible.. the Zune is already ahead of the ipod for me.. and something I thought i'd never say but MS have actually made a better looking product than apple with this one (and the current model). Amazing what a company can do when they're playing catch-up.
just make it work with my macbook!
