It's over.  What do you guys think?  Some notes:

  • Minor updates to laptops (as predicted)  SD replaces Express Card, more battery, cheaper prices, FW800 on 13 inch with new name
  • Snow Leopard is coming along nicely.  Looks very optimized.  Exchange support is nice...for some
  • iPhone SDK games are fantastic.  New uses with SDK.
  • iPhone 3GS adds some speed, a better camera, compass and lower price points.

Well?

AT&T Sucks!! They are killing the benefits of iPhone 3.0 and the the iPhone 3Gs. They should be sued for breaking the contract with all of the subscribers. We signed a two year contract and pay out bills, they need to provide stable fast service. restricting service is total BS! I'm shocked Apple is letting them get away with all of this crap! Verizon or T-Mobile would bend over to get the business.

...not to mention their service is atrocious.  We think Apple will let jailbreakers open up the tethering/MMS for free...let's see what happens

Verizon wasn't interested in iPhone from the beginning. They were offered iPhone first but wouldn't let Apple Inc have complete control of design and build. ATT agreed with Apple being in complete control so they got the iPhone. I have a Verizon account and the only thing they bend over backwards to do is get your monthly payment.

Actually, later reports came out that refuted the initial rumors of Verizon being offered the iPhone. Also, there's the little fact that Apple has publicly stated on several occasions that they always intended for the iPhone to operate in the global marketplace, and for that to work, it needed to use GSM, not CDMA, which is what Verizon is still built on.

Both CDMA and GSM are global, albeit in different countries and areas. GSM has more global reach so the point is well taken.

did anyone else see this from the fine print on the iphone page?

(2) Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

I'm not sure where you saw this... I still have the original iPhone and I got it when it first came out 2 years ago, and I just ordered an iPhone 3GS 32GB for the 299 price point. Maybe the prices you found are for if you are updating before your 2 year contract is over?

Actually, if you bought a first generation iPhone, it was not subsidized, and therefore, you'll get the lowest price when upgrading. Also, I bought a 3G iPhone in July 2008 and was able to get the "early upgrade" price of $499 for a 32GB, not $599. I ordered from the Apple Store online today.

Seriously 6 new iPhone features....in a year :/ and no changes to the apperance? what is going on here. I think it's cos old stevo was off dying somewhere (how unthoughtfull I mean are we, the general public , not more important than his health??? /sarcasm/) and there was no pushing force on any of the desighn team or the developing team. That iPhone 3G'S' looks like it was thrown together in 3-4 months and the new 'features' are things I'd expect to see on a mid-ranged SE not a high class iPhone (and btw apple video on a phone is not revolutionary ,Che Geneva was revolutionary, being able to capture short clips of various family members is not....) However snowleapord is great and its nice to see them stop craming in new features and just concentrate for a year on how to make it run smmmoooothhhlllyyy:):) and i like the new macbook pros with the SD card slots very usfulll. so all in all it was ok , not exactly WWDC '07 but not as bad as MW '99-'08 :D oh and Jonathan Ive you stole all of ur ideas from one mr.Dieter Rams

I have to admit, there are a load of new features both hardware and software that really increases the attractiveness of the device. Although, this does not seem like a major upgrade in terms of hardware.
I think Apple is relying on their incredible application lead compared to the competition.
Hopefully during the next upgrade cycle we'll see more of a major hardware upgrade.

I guess this means I don't have to get up at 3AM and wait in a long line to get my iPhone 3GS on launch day!

ATT sucks big time with no MMS and tethering. Major bummer.

Happily, I hate SMS and MMS and their associated charges, so the AT&T limitation isn't a big deal for me. And I understand that other vendors (like Verizon) charge a premium for tethering. And so, personally, I am not missing out.... I'm not willing to pay for those things anyway. $70/month is enough.

HOWEVER, I do think that this shows that AT&T is far behind the curve. Verizon can use these arbitrary AT&T-only restrictions as a lever against AT&T. Dumb dumb dumb. Apple likely can't wait to have the iPhone on other providers, but it is in neither of their interests to talk about the end of their agreement.

I assume that AT&T's issue is a capacity one. Perhaps network is near capacity in some areas, and they don't think they can successfully carry the extra bandwidth for tethering or MMS. I think the iPhone is consuming a bit more bandwidth than other phones they've offered. I think they're scared that iPhone users will quickly consume substantially more bandwidth once MMS and tethering emerge.

I'm rather disappointed that iPhone 3G owners aren't eligible for upgrade pricing. They took care of their 1st Gen owners, which was exceptional, but 3G owners are stuck with a higher price point. Silly decision considering you're making profit off of 2 iPhones from me instead of only 1 from a new subscriber. Other than that I'm happy with the keynote

2G wasn't subsidised. 3G is - you don't own your 3G yet until you've paid off the entire contract.

It's very hard for people to understand these things, All AT&T did was loan you the money to buy the device at full price and in exchange you pay a little extra every month, basically all you did was finance your phone.

:( Bastards.

Yeah, as you'll recall, they added $10.00/mo for G3. By my calculation, that's $240.00 for the 2/yr contract.
So, since they are requiring an additional 2/yr contract, you should be credited for each month you are essentially adding.

Where's the front facing camera!!!

Is video iChat on the iPhone still ANOTHER year away? I've been holding out for that feature since the first iPhone came out!

Apple always pride themselves on offering the easiest, simplest, and most reliable to use products... That being said, I don't think they would offer a video chat iPhone until AT&T's network is fast/reliable enough to be able to handle millions of iphone users video chatting, because that feature would be awesome and you know everyone would be logging some quality hours on the network.

Not much to get excited about.

I don't think there was a huge update on the actual device. Don't think there is any reason to update from my 16gb 3g.

I'm in the same boat as you, voice control, compass, and new camera are really just meh. Sure there is a faster Proc and Better Ram, but Apps are still going to be written for the lowest common denominator so no worries. I'll just do my upgrading next year.

I was very disappointed though, it's like Apple really didn't even show up to WWDC, Snow Leopard looked ok, but wasn't overwhelmingly grand, the iPhone 3GS is just a remake really, it's like the difference between the Nintendo DS and the DSi.

New MacBook Pro changes weren't all that impressive. I feel a little let down by Apple, I think it might end up hurting them in sales though by not refreshing the design a little bit, and offering only small hardware changes. I'm sure after this little keynote the Palm Pre is looking mighty good right about now.

:( We always have next year though, right?

I agree, Apple really disappointed with this event... I've followed them since 1984. Anticipation is always very high, and at times expectations are not meet, but this event was horrible...i huge disappointment. I don't blame Steve Jobs for being as far away from this event as possible!!

I suppose I agree.

However, Phil, Scott and the rest of the team still put on a solid show with impressive products such as they were.

I think though that a front facing camera with ichat and a cameo by Jobs would have been that extra umphh that would have more customers wanting to upgrade.

What a letdown. 3GS...ha. They could have at LEAST refreshed the outside appearance of the new iPhone

i barely use the camera and im not going to be buying the new one.... the update is BS. go home nothing to see here

Also looks like some of ssd bto options had a priced drop =).

yeah u got the laptops right but where r the pro apps?

AT&T SUCKS. I am so disappointed. I'm a huge Apple fan, but honestly, how can Apple unveil two awesome great features and then say, but US customers can't have them. Totally bummed.

Waiting to upgrade. Join me.
