Do you need to have a Mac Edition????
It's just a hard drive, it will work with any OS!
Ya I never understood that either
I think the mac edition have some tools for mac pre-installed
It's not the harddrive but the case. Mac "edition" enclosures include FireWire. Not to say that a non-Mac version wouldn't but if there are seemingly identical external drives with a Mac and non-Mac versions then there is a good chance the Mac version will include FireWire.
It doesn't have firewire. It's HFS formatted.

I had a MyBook a couple of years ago. That one died in less that a year of use. It also kept powering on and off about every 15 minutes and made noise. I could even feel a light vibration on my desktop when it was spinning. My Seagate external which was 6 months older is still going, quiet, and never makes much noise or vibration.
I have one of these that is almost 2 years old (500GB). It works great, isn't loud and has never had any issues. Mine is a Studio Line with Firewire however.
If you read the features on BestBuy's site you'll see it's HFS+ formatted and USB 2.0. If it had Firewire it would say Firewire. You could format another drive to HFS+ but this one comes pre-formatted HFS+ for convenience.
I don't get WD's naming scheme with the My Book series whatsoever; the Mac Edition just means it's preformated HFS for Mac, but it doesn't have FireWire. If you want FW, you have to pay premium for the Studio Edition, also preformated HFS for Mac. So, no FW on this one...PASS.
Also, just to add my .02. If stability and longevity are issues for you (and i would assume that those two are musts) then don't get this drive.
These things are crap, and WD should be sued for selling such unreliable pieces of crap.
buy it because its cheaper than the one on new egg and reformat it for windows and mac?
I've been through a couple of these, and so have my dearest friends. ALL OF US have lost our asses to these drives. Complete and total JUNK, and their support is the only thing worse. AVOID or pay the price.
I have two WD HDs and have had NO problems so far. One is a back up for my iMac G5 and the other just hold extra files.
Of course a Mac version of anything should have FireWire 800. Anything else to me is worthless for my new MPB.
And those deals are always ONLY for USA, not even international shipping.. come on...
