USA Today: Apple and Verizon working on CDMA iPhone
Yet another source is saying that AT&T and Verizon are working on an iPhone. USA Today, adds their fuel to the fire:
It would mark the first time Apple has produced a version of the iPhone for a CDMA wireless network, which is different from AT&T's GSM technology. Vodafone, co-owner of Verizon Wireless, already sells the iPhone in Europe.
The New York-based telecom entered into "high-level" discussions with Apple management a few months ago, when CEO Steve Jobs was overseeing day-to-day business, these sources say. They declined to be named because they aren't authorized to speak publicly.
Sounds sorta legit to us. Although, many sources have stated different lengths of time in the AT&T-Apple exclusivity deal (Including two different timeframes by USA Today alone which BOTH run counter to this story).
This one does corroborate our report from way back when, plus it would push AT&T to be more competitive, which is sorely needed.
USA Today continues:
Regardless, Entner says, Apple would likely maintain ties with AT&T. The biggest winners, by far, would be consumers, he says.
"They could pick the network they wanted to use: AT&T's or Verizon's," he says. "It would finally give consumers choice, and choice is a good thing."
Entner says Verizon would fare well in that fight. While AT&T's 3G network is "somewhat faster," he says, Verizon's network "is generally perceived to be better in terms of reliability."
The biggest loser? "AT&T," Entner says. "It would be a reversal of fortune, because a lot of people who have been disappointed in AT&T's network but love the iPhone would probably" jump to Verizon.
Apple would also benefit, he adds, "because that means they'd have to buy a new iPhone."

"Sounds sorta legit to us..." If you're trying to bump Verizon's stock price maybe. For maybe three years on a dying platform and maybe a couple of million sales, why would Apple develop a new iteration of an already successful device? When you add in such highly relevant detail as Vodafone's ownership share in Verizon and how they already sell the iPhone in Europe, well it sounds like somebody is sending out a press release in the guise of being an unnamed source. And then there's that old nugget "choice is a good thing." Because Apple is really into choice as a matter of policy, right? Or is it just another restatement of that old capitalist canard? What happened to American journalism?
What does any of the traditional news media sources know about tech?
These negotiations are for 2010. The foo-churrr!!
By then, Verizon will have started to launch their 4G network in several U.S. cities.
At the same time Apple will launch a new iphone for both AT&T and Verizon that uses the LTE wireless standard. Apple has no reason to launch a seperate CDMA phone while Verizon is busy rolling out their 4G network. CDMA is dead. 4G has no backwards compatibility with CDMA.
Why in the hell would Apple launch a CDMA phone just for verizon? What sense would it make for Apple to launch a CDMA iphone in 2010 when at that time Verizon will have moved to 4G networking technology?

Their (sources) are probably the last few weeks of rumors on blog posts. IF Apple does make a phone for Verizon it will be after AT&T makes the transition to LTE (4G) since Verizon will finally be on the same protocol as well. No way Apple would make a CDMA phone for 1 year just for Verizon unless they will make a Mac for AMD processors just for next year. Yeah it sounds like a really stupid idea. Not going to happen this year or next. See you in 2011 iPhone LTE. BTW, I have a 1G iPhone and will be upgrading this summer. That puts me right on track for an iPhone LTE in 2+ years. Yeah!
Hopefully it'd push Verizon to be more competitive. The danger is that AT&T would RAISE their rates.
Verizon is simply more expensive that AT&T. Really. Go to Verizon Wireless, pick out a BlackBerry and a comparable plan to the one you have today, and check out what your initial and monthly fees would be.
And remember, that Email & Web data plan by Verizon is quite restrictive.
iPhone landing on CDMA is a waste of time. It is a dead or dying system even in the US and no other territory is even close to using it.
iPhone is not a Verizon phone. Get over it, and join the rest of the world in the use of the vastly superior GSM.
Everywhere else in the world is going 3G and/or working on 4G, why bother with CDMA?
The CDMA towers and signals work just as well with 3G, and you get better content - just see the transition that occurred in Australia last year.
